Abstract

A handle for extending a paint brush comprises a self-contained unit that extends a user's reach. There may be a telescopically extending shaft, which may be locked in variable positions (Fig 8). The handle extender may be used with various types of brush, which require no modification to fit onto the universal brush holder. The brush holder may comprise gripping sections (Fig 6), which may be tightened using a retaining collar. An ergonomic handle may be provided (Fig 1).

Description

Specification
Description
Product Name -Extenda Brush Reason for Design -Most ceilings are at least six foot high, this means that the average painter cannot reach the top edges without some form of apparatus to increase their reach. All the other extension products on the market are brush holders that have to be fitted to a 3rd party extension pole. This unit is self contained with no need for the introduction of any other parts.
The product can also be used outdoors, for painting window frames, facias and cladding. One of the big uses with painting outside is reaching over obstacles like flower beds. This product will help the user increase their coverage from each position, and reduce the need to move their steps/ladder as much.
Product Use -The user pulls out the extension pole so the unit is at its maximum length, locking it out with the switch (Figure 3), they then put their standard brush in the holder (handle end first)at the end of the extended pole. The holding of the brush is achieved by tightening the collar to grip the neck (figure 6) of the installed brush, allowing the user to reach High/low areas beyond their normal reach.
Product Benefit -Removes the need for working at height permits, thus increasing the on the job' time and speeding up the users output, reducing the job cost, or increasing the profit margin. This unit also reduces the health and safety risks of falling from low level ladders and platforms. Also allows the user to paint low areas without getting on their knees or bending down, meaning it reduces the pressure on their knees and back over a prolonged period of time. No need to carry an extension pole separately that the brush holder then fits onto, as the product is totally self contained. Brush design handle gives familiar feel, and allows user to paint intricate, detailed areas.
Compact design fits in pockets, or on the belt. Unlike other products on the market that have a large pole type handle.
Variation on current designs -Current products are not telescopic and use a roller type handles, or are fixtures that hold a brush at one end, and an added (3 party) extension pole the other. This unit is self contained, and pocket size, the telescopic part is integral to the design (extendable shaft fits inside the handle). No need for extra parts to make it extended Product assembly -Handle -Wooden brush design handle (see fig 1) with bored out centre (see fig 2) running the length of the device. There is also a milled out section to allow the insertion of the rocker switch.
Lock out Mechanism -There is a switch inserted into the handle that is used to retain the shaft. This is a sprung rocker type switch. The switch operates by inserting a steel collar around the sliding shaft that runs in the bored out handle, fix's it at the desired length.
Shaft -The shaft has grooves cut into it (see figure 8) that allows a switch mechanism fitted to the handle to lock the shaft at the desired length (see fig 3) via switch to control a steel sprung collar (Figure 7). The shaft can return into the handle, leaving only the brush holder exposed (see fig 4).
The end fixture is secured through a threaded hole at the end of the shaft. The shaft fixes to the holder via a drilled and tapped whole.
Brush Holder -This would be made out a flexible memory injection moulded or machined plastic.
The fixture at the end of the shaft is designed to accommodate different a paint brush handles. The end of the brush locates in the cone shaped base (at the shaft end) of the holder (see fig 5). The collar is then tightened, pulling the 4 fins towards each other, until they grip the other end of the inserted brush handle (see fig 6). The retaining collar would be made from steel or plastic, and use a wing nut designed handle to tighten, running on a worm type thread. Claim

Claims (6)

1. Self contained product that increases the users reach, needing no other units to extend and hold a paint brush.
2. As set in claim 1. The extendable function is integral to the design, fitting inside the handle, meaning the user only needs to carry one part.
3. Variable extension settings selectable by the user allow differing painting distances.
4. Holder that retains various brush designs means it does not need to be swapped or replaced when changing brushes.
5. Brush does not need to be modified to fit on the unit.
6. Ergonomic brush type handle to give user familiar feel and ability to perform intricate painting tasks as they would with a standard brush handle.
