Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO CATCHES FOR GATES FOR USE
IN TRANSPORTERS
Field to the Invention
The present invention catches for gates for use in transporters, transporters comprising catches and especially, but not limited to, catches for gates for use in livestock transporters and transporters for use in transporting livestock. The present invention further relates to associated methods.
BackQround to the Invention Trailers and other transporters for use in transporting livestock generally comprise a number of levels each level having a platform to support the livestock. Each level may be divided into sections along its length with one or more gates, the gates being shut to create separate pens for the livestock. During loading and unloading, or if separate pens are not required the gates are opened.
Such transporters enable livestock to be transported economically and efficiently.
Transporters for transporting livestock may comprise an integrated cab plus transport area or comprise a trailer forming a livestock area to be towed behind a tractor unit.
It is known for gates to be retained in a closed position by catches and in particular by slam catches. A slam catch is a catch which has a locking member biased towards a closed position. A slam catch is adapted to allow a latch member to strike the locking member whilst it is in a closed position so as to move it to an open position allowing the latch member to enter into the catch following which the locking member returns to the closed position and retains the latch member in the latch. A user can release a latch member from a slam catch by operating a handle to move the locking member to an open position to allow the latch member to exit the catch Known slam catches are effective but may suffer disadvantages. In particular the handles may be prone to being knocked by livestock.
It is an aim of the present invention to address at least one problem associated with the prior art, whether referred to herein or otherwise.
Summary of the Invention
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a catch for a gate for use in a transporter, the catch comprising a body, a locking member carried by the body and biased towards a closed position and a handle for moving the locking member to an open position and wherein the catch is adapted to hinder livestock from moving the handle to cause the locking member to move to the open position.
Suitably, the catch is adapted such that, in use, a latch member of a latch can strike the locking member whilst said locking member is in the closed position so as to move the locking member to the open position allowing the latch member to enter into the catch following which the locking member returns to the closed position.
Suitably, the catch is a slam catch. The catch may comprise one or more features of known slam catches.
Suitably, the locking member is spring biased towards the closed position.
Suitably, the catch has a slim design. Suitably, the catch is adapted such that it can be fitted close to a side wall of a transporter to minimise the opportunity for livestock to move the handle. Suitably, the catch is adapted to be fitted flush to a side wall of a transporter.
Suitably, the catch has a width of 40mm or less. Suitably, the catch has a width of 35mm or less. The catch may have a width of around 30mm.
Suitably, the handle is shaped to restrict livestock from being able to move it. Suitably, the handle is shaped to restrict livestock from being able to pull or push it with their body parts, for example the handle may be shaped to prevent a pig from moving the handle by nuzzling it with its snout.
Suitably, the handle comprises a curved part. Suitably, the handle comprises a curved free end. Suitably, the handle comprises a straight part. Suitably, the handle comprises a straight part which enters into the body of the catch. Suitably, the handle comprises a straight part adapted to extend substantially vertically when the locking member is in the closed position.
Suitably, the handle comprises an actuating surface which is adapted to be pulled against to move the handle so as to move the locking member to an open position.
Suitably, the locking member comprises a retaining surface which is adapted to engage and retain a latch member in the catch when the latch member is located in the catch and the locking member is in the closed position.
Suitably, the actuating surface of the handle is adapted to lie closer to the rear of the catch than does the retaining surface of the locking member when the locking member is in the closed position.
Suitably, the catch is adapted such that, in use, the actuating surface of the handle lies rearward of a latch when the locking member is in the closed position and a latch member is located in the catch. Suitably, the catch is adapted such that, in use, when a latch member is located in the catch a gate to which the latch is mounted lies adjacent the catch and substantially prevents livestock from accessing the actuating surface of the handle.
For the avoidance of doubt, as used herein the front of the catch is considered to be the part which a latch member passes first when entering into the catch. Suitably, a catch is adapted to be fitted to a transporter such that the front of the catch faces towards the rear of the transporter.
Suitably, the handle is shaped, suitably curved, such that a free end thereof lies closer to the rear of the catch than does another part of the handle. Suitably, the handle is shaped, suitably curved, such that a free end thereof lies closer to the rear of the catch than does the part of the handle which enters the body.
Suitably, the free end of the handle is adapted to lie approximately a fingers width rearward of a part of the handle which is adapted to extend substantially vertically when the locking member is in the closed position.
Suitably, the handle has a slim design. Suitably, the handle is adapted such that it can be fitted close to a side wall of a transporter to minimise the opportunity for livestock to move the handle. Suitably, the handle is adapted to be fitted flush to a side wall of a transporter.

Brief Description of the Drawings
The present invention will now be described, by way of example only, and with reference to the following drawings, in which: Figure 1 is an isometric view of a catch with a locking member in a closed position; and Figure 2 is an isometric view of a catch with a locking member in an open position.
Description of the Preferred Embodiments
As shown by Figures 1 and 2 a catch 10 comprises a locking member 20 mounted within a body 30. The locking member 20 is moveable between open and closed positions and is biased towards the closed position by a spring (not shown). The locking member can be moved from its closed position (shown in Figure 1) to its open position (shown in Figure 2) by operation of a handle 40.
The catch 10 is a slam catch and the catch is adapted such that the locking member 20 can also be moved from the closed position to the open position when struck by a latch member (not shown) of a latch (not shown) as the latch member enters the catch 10. Once the latch member has passed the locking member 20 and entered into the catch 10 the spring bias returns the locking member 20 to the closed position such that it retains the latch member.
This sequence occurs without movement of the handle.
The handle 40 has a straight part 42 adapted to extend substantially vertically in use when the locking member 20 is in the closed position. The handle 40 has a curved part 44 towards its free end 46 such that the free end 44 lies rearward of the straight part 42.
The handle 40 has an actuating surface 48 which is adapted to be pulled against to move the handle so as to move the locking member to an open position.
The locking member 20 comprises a retaining surface 22 which is adapted to engage and retain a latch member in the catch 10 when the latch member is located in the catch 10 and the locking member 20 is in the closed position.
The actuating surface 48 of the handle 40 is adapted to lie closer to the rear 12 of the catch 10 than does the retaining surface 22 of the locking member 20 when the locking member is in the closed position.
The catch 10 is adapted such that, in use, the actuating surface 48 of the handle 40 lies rearward of a latch when the locking member 20 is in the closed position and a latch member is located in the catch 10. In use a gate to which the latch is mounted can thus be located adjacent the catch to substantially prevent livestock from accessing the actuating surface of the handle.
The catch 10 further comprises retaining means for preventing movement of the handle 40.
The retaining means comprises an aperture 60 through which a pin (not shown) can be inserted to block the path of the handle 40.
In use, when set in the configuration shown in Figure 1 the catch 10 can automatically receive and retain a latch member of a gate in position when a gate is shut. To open the gate a user pulls the handle 40 upwards causing the locking member 20 to move to the open position allowing the latch to exit that catch 10.
It will be appreciated that preferred embodiments of the invention may provide for efficient transportation of livestock.
