Abstract

A door stop constructed from bent sheet metal comprises an L-shaped strip of metal having a first arm and a second arm 104. The end of the first arm is bent substantially at a right angle to the first arm and is substantially parallel to the second arm and forms a stop surface 108 upon which a stopper 106, which may be rubber, is fixed. The end of the second arm is bent substantially at a right angle to the second arm and is substantially parallel to the first arm and forms a mounting surface 112 to mount the door stop on a wall adjacent the door; a strengthening rib and mounting holes also being provided. The bent doorstop enables the doorstop to be mounted on an adjacent wall parallel with the closed door such as a patio door and prevents the door from opening greater than 90 degrees.

Description

Patent Application of Jeff Thompson for Doors top
Field of Invention
This invention relates to a doorstop for use with an outwardly opening patio door.
Background of the Invention
Door stops attached to floors and walls adjacent to doors to prevent them from banging against surfaces adjacent the door, or to prevent them opening more than their hinges might permit are well known. These are not suitable for use with an outwardly opening patio door because there is nothing the stops may be conveniently attached to.
Disclosure of Invention
From the foregoing, it may be appreciated that a need has arisen for a doorstop which may be used to prevent an outwardly opening patio door from banging onto exterior surfaces adjacent the door, which could cause damage to both the door and the exterior surface.
According to various, but not necessarily all, embodiments of the present invention there is provided a doorstop for use with an outwardly opening patio door, which includes an L-shaped strip of metal having a first arm and a second arm. The end of the first arm is bent substantially at a right angle to the first arm and is substantially parallel to the second arm. The end of the second arm is similarly bent substantially at a right angle to the second arm and is substantially parallel to the first arm. A stop is affixed to the bent part of the first arm. The stop is of conventional design, and may be made of rubber. Two or more holes in the bent part of the second arm allow the doorstop to be affixed to a wall adjacent the patio door by means of screws. A brace between the second arm and the bent part of the second arm gives the doorstop added strength and rigidity. The bent metal bracket allows for the rubber stop to reach the door easily when the doorstop is affixed to a wall adjacent the door. The doorstop limits the opening of the patio door, preventing it from banging onto exterior surfaces adjacent the door.
Brief Description of Drawings
For a more complete explanation of the present invention and the technical advantages thereof, reference is now made to the following description and the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows an overview of the doorstop present invention; and Figure 2 shows typical dimensions (in mm) of the doorstop of the present invention.
Best Mode for Carrying Out the Invention
Embodiments of the present invention and their technical advantages may be better understood by referring to Figure 1, which shows a doorstop (100) for use with an outwardly opening patio door. The doorstop includes an L-shaped strip of metal having a first arm (102) and a second arm (104) . The end of the first arm is bent substantially at a right angle to the first arm and is substantially parallel to the second arm. The end of the second arm is similarly bent substantially at a right angle to the second arm and is substantially parallel to the first arm.
A stop (106) is affixed to the bent part (108) of the first arm. The stop is of conventional design, and may be made of rubber. Two or more holes (110) in the bent part (112) of the second arm allow the doorstop to be affixed to a wall adjacent the patio door by means of screws. A brace (114) between the second arm and the bent part of the second arm gives the doorstop added strength and rigidity. The bent metal bracket allows for the rubber stop to reach the door easily when the doorstop is affixed to a wall adjacent the door. The doorstop limits the opening of the patio door, preventing it from banging onto exterior surfaces adjacent the door.
By way of example, and without intending to limit the scope of the invention, typical dimensions are shown in Figure 2.

Claims (3)

  1. CLAIMS1. A doorstop (100) for use with an outwardly opening patio door including: (a) an L-shaped strip of metal having a first arm (102) and a second arm (104), in which an end of the first arm is substantially at a right angle to the first arm and is substantially parallel to the second arm, and in which an end of the second armies bent substantially at a right angle to the second arm and is substantially parallel to the first arm; (b) a stop (106) affixed to the bent part (108) of the first arm; (c) two or more holes (110) in the bent part (112) of the second arm; (d) a brace (114) between the second arm and the bent part of the second arm; whereby the doorstop may be affixed to a wall adjacent the patio door by means of screws placed through the holes, whereby the doorstop limits the opening of the patio door, preventing it from banging on to exterior surfaces adjacent the door.
    Q
  2. 2. A doorstop for use with an outwardly opening patio door, comprising a bent metal Cy) bracket having means to enable one end of the bracket to be fixed to a wall adjacent the door, and a stop mounted on a bent part at the other end of the bracket to limit the opening of the door.
  3. 3. A doorstop substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
