Abstract

A puff binder (composition which often contains a foaming agent or comprising a resin which often foams [neither specifically mentioned in application], sometimes having a pigment added, which expands when it is subjected to heat) is raised and fixed by using a Laser. This may include the adding of a retarder to the puff binder to hold off the fixing process. Laser etching is conducted at a power and speed sufficient to heat the binder enough to make it react but insufficient for it to etch into the puff binder. The process may be computer controlled. Fabric or paper may be screen printed with a puff binder, and then exposed to the laser treatment.

Description

1 Laser Etching Puff Binder 1 Title: Laser Etching Puff Binder Backurouncl: This invention relates to the laser etching of puff binders.
Puff Binder is used to produce 3-dimentional marks on materials by combining Binder with Pigment. The solution can be screen-printed and the optimum effect is achieved when heat is applied to the reverse of the material to simultaneously raise and fix the 3d print. Puff Binder is both a washable and a semi-flexible material. To screen print Puff Binder it is normal to use a wide mesh silk screen. This makes printing in detail difficult.
Statement of Invention:
To overcome this, the present invention proposes a method of raising and fixing the Puff Binder using the heat from a Laser Machine. To overcome the time constrictions of the Puff Binder fixing, I propose the use of a Retarder in the Puff Binder Solution. The proposed Process uses material with a layer of Puff Binder upon it and exposes it to a laser with specific line width, speed and power settings.
Advantages: The precision of the laser provides a detailed and controlled method of raising and fixing the Puff Binder Solution. Preferably, the Power / Speed settings will be suitably powerful and slow as to activate the Puff Binders raising agents but not to damage the Puff Binder or material. Preferably, there would be a percentage of Retarder added to the Puff Binder and Pigment to hold off the fixing process.
Introduction to Drawings:
The process wilt now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: * Figure 1 shows a Retarder being added to a Puff Binder solution.
* Figure 2 shows Puff Binder / Retarder / Pigment Solution being applied to a material by screen-printing.
* Figure 3 shows a design programmed onto the Laser Machinery Computer using a Flash Drive.
* Figure 4 shows the Laser passing over the layer of Puff Binder Solution on a material.
Detailed Description:
In figure 1, a Retarder 1 is added to a Puff Binder Solution 2, which may contain or not contain pigment. T found that adding 50% Retarder to the Puff Binder Solution lengthened the fixing time of the Solution well but diluted the Puff Binder Solution significantly.
2 Laser Etching Puff Binder I found that adding 20% Retarder also held off the fixing process as did 10% Retarder which I found the most suitable. Figure 2 shows the Solution now containing Retarder 4 being passed through a Silk Screen 5 in a shape / design / pattern 7 by use of a squeegee 6 onto a material 3. The material may vary from Fabrics to Paper.
This process is not limited to Screen Printing. The Solution may be applied to the material using a variety of methods including Block Printing.
Figure 3 portrays the image / pattern / design as a jpeg 7 being programmed onto the Laser Machine's 10 Computer 8 software using a Flash Drive 9. One can use different methods of programming the image / pattern / design onto the Software, I have used a Flash Drive by way of example. Using the Laser Machinery Computer, the image / pattern / design is given a specific laser line width and the Power / Speed settings are defined. When the Laser Machinery has the Power Settings on at 60% -0% and the Speed set at 65%, the result is that the Laser etches into the layer of Puff Binder on the material. When the Power settings are set at 5% -0% Power and 10% Speed there is no reaction. However when the Power is set at 3.5% -0% Power and 7.5% Speed, the Puff Binder Solution instantly rises and fixes resulting in a 3-Dimentional image / pattern / design upon the material.
The Laser is given a target position to etch, which is where the material is placed on the laser bed. Where upon the material there is no Puff Binder Solution, the Power / Speed settings mean that there is no effect to the material. This means that there is no chance of accidentally etching into the material. Figure 4 is a detail of the process whereby the Laser 11 passes over the Puff Binder Solution 12 upon the material 3 causing the Puff Binder Solution to rise and subsequently fix 13.
