Abstract

A hook 1 for hanging pictures, ceramics and the like on a wall two parts 2,3 preferably formed of brass strip. The upper part 2 has a bore 4 for a screw S, with which the picture hook is fixed in a wall W. Beneath the bore, the sides 5 of the part are turned out of the plane of the strip and in over it to form an over-hung channel 6. The lower part 3 has a tang received in the channel with upper lugs 8 to limit movement down out of the channel and with a hook 9. The tang is provided with a crimped-on, threaded boss 10, fitted with a grub screw 11. The position of the tang in the channel, and the distance between the bore 4 and hook 9 is adjustable in accordance with where along the channel the grub screw is engaged with the back web 12 of the channel part 2. The top of the tang is scalloped at 14 to clear the fixing screw when the hook is shortened to the minimum for lifting to the maximum a picture supported by picture wire PW.

Description

PICTURE HOOK
The present invention relates to a picture hook.
In the home, owners decorate their walls with pictures and other artefacts hung on the walls by means of picture hooks. Such hooks have an upturned, hook end onto which the picture is hooked, traditionally by means of a length piece of picture wire and increasingly now by means of a piece of synthetic material cord. At an upper end a picture hook has means for fixing to the wall, in the form of a hole for a nail or screw.
In this specification, the term "picture hook" is used even if the artefact to be hung is something different such as a ceramic piece.
An awkwardness in the use of picture hooks is adjustment of the height of the picture, to be level with a neighbouring picture. Picture wire or cord runs behind a picture at a shallow angle and is difficult to tie off at a length such as to provide easy height adjustment.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved picture hook. S... * . S...
* According to the invention there is provided a picture hook having a first, * : upper-in-use, part having means for fixing to a wall and a second, lower-in-use, part * having a turned-up, hook end for supporting a picture, the two parts being adjustably *.e connected whereby the distance between the fixing means and the turned-up hook can * * be adjusted for adjusting the hung height of a picture or artefact.
*...*. * S
Various means can be envisaged for adjustably connecting the first and second parts. For instance one can be provided with a slot for receiving a grub screw is threadedly engaged with the other. In the preferred embodiment, one part, preferably the upper, is provided with an overhung channel in which the other part is receivable.
The received part is provided with a threaded boss in which a screw is threadedly engaged for locking abutment with a back of the channel member, the back being against a wall in use. The threaded boss could equally be provided on the channel member for the screw to lock against the received part, with the channel facing forwards. However, this arrangement is less compact.
To help understanding of the invention, a specific embodiment thereof will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a picture hook in accordance with the invention and Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view o n the line Il-Il in Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, a picture hook 1 is of two parts 2,3 formed of brass strip. The upper part 2 has a bore 4 for a screw S, with which the picture hook is fixed in a wall W. Beneath the bore, the sides 5 of the part are turned out of the plane of the strip and in over it to form an over-hung channel 6. The lower part 3 has a tang 7 received in the channel with upper lugs 8 to limit movement down out of the channel and with a hook 9. The tang is provided with a crimped-on, threaded boss 10, fitted with a grub screw 11.
The position of the tang in the channel, and the distance between the bore 4 and hook 9 is adjustable in accordance with where along the channel the grub screw is S...
