Also claimed is an emanation device comprising a wick made from dried balsa wood from the plant speciesOchromaPyramidaleand a method of disseminating a volatile liquid.
Description
Volatile Liouid Transfer Materials Held of the Invention The present invention relatas to liquid transfer materials, wicks, made of plant material and their use for the transfer and evaporation of volatile liquids comprising actives, such as fragrances, insecticides, fungicides. pesticides, sanitizing materials and phamaceuticals are provided.
Background
Examples of commonly used wick marials are cellulose, either in the form of cardboard (pressed oulp) or fibres porous plastic graphite and even ceramic increasingly natural mate ials are used, commonly used natural materials include plant stem materials such as bamboo and rattan.
The efficiency of a particular wick material depends on the nature of the liquid, or component liquids within the liquid. Most available wick materials, such as Those mentioned above, have a limited porosity and liquid tansfer rate/evaporation rate due: at least in part, to ftaconation and/or blocking/clogging of the wick. Fractionation over time will change the character and/or intensity ot the active and will slow evaporation this is particularly noticeable foi fragiancos wherein common wicks Lause the high notes o a fragrance to be eraporated when the wick is first exposed to the fragranced liquid, and the low notest are evaporated thereafter which affects the usefs experience.
Therefore. there remains a need for a transfer element material that can efficiently transfer liquids contain ng actwes eta substantially uniform rate prefeiably without tanoing towaros fractionation
Summary of Invention
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided therefore a transfer material fcr transferring and evaporating a volatile liquid containing one or more active materials wherein the active material comprises at least one of: a fragrances; an insecticide: a fungicide; a pesticide a sanitizing matenal and'or a pharmac eutical ano wherein tne transfer matenal comprises dried balsa wood from the plant species Ochroma Pyrarnida/e.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided an emanation device comprising: a reservoir for containing a volatile liquid containing one or more active materials wherein the activi inateiaI compnses at least one of a fragrance an insecticide a fungicide a pesticide a sanitizing material; and/or a pharmaceutical.: and a transfer material having one end disposed within the reservoir to, in use, be in fluid communication with the volatile liquid and having the other end exposed outside of the reservoir wherein the transfer material comprises dried balsa wood from the plant species Ochroma Pyramidale.
The emanation device according to the second aspect may further comprise a separate emanation surface wherein, in use, the balsa wood transfer material is arranged to transfer the liquid from the reservoir to the emanation surface without substantial emanation of the liquid from said transfer material. The emanating surface may be any suitable surface made of any suitable material for emanating the liquid therefrom into the surrounding environment.
According to a third aspect of the present invent on there is provided an emanation device comprising: a reservoir for containing a volathe liquid containing one or more active materials wherein the active material comprises at least one of: a fragrance; an insecticide; a fungicide: a pesticide; a sanitizing material; and/or a pharmaceutical; and a liquid conduir foi transporting volatile liquid from the iesoivorr to a transfer maenal for emanation therefrom wherein the transfer matenal compnes dned balsa wood from the plant species Ochrorna Pyramida/e.
Preferably the liquid conduit in the device of the third embodiment is arranged, in use, to provide volatile liquid to the transfer mateial on an intormittent basis According to a fourth aspect of the present invention there is provided therefore a method of disseminating a volatile liquid containing one or more active materials wherein the active material comprises at least one of: a fragrance; an insecticide; a fungicide; a pesticide; a sanitizing material; and/or a pharmaceutical; from a reservoir of said volatile liquid into the surrounding atmosphere comprising transferring and evaporating said volatile liquid with a transfer material comprising dried balsa wood from the plantspecies Ochroma PyramIda/e.
Dried balsa wood has, sumpr singly, demonstrated the desired properties of being able to efficiently transfer liquids containing actives, both aqueous and non-aqueous liquids, at a uniform evaporation rate without significant fractionation.
The balsa vcood transfer material is dned and may bc usec in crude form or they may bc first sanded or shaved. Alternatively or additionally said balsa wood transfer material may he shaped by any convenient means to give rods or sheets of regular cross-section, shaping may be effected by routing sawing, planing. cutting, iathbg or forming in a die. The regular cross-section may by any desued shape such ascucular ellrpbcal square rectangula or polygonal As a further alternative the balsa wood transfer material may he molded into a desired shape, Sara molding may be of the balsa wnod berore us fust dned or of balsa wooo that;s intrafly dned before being wetted to undergo the molding process. Preferabty the molding of the balsa wood transfer material is to impart a curved shape thereto whilst the internal mechanics of the resulting structure is not fully understood. it is thought thatthe curved surface leads to improved emanation cf volatile material due a stretching and/or opening of the internal capillaries of the material, The balsa wood transfer matenal of the present invention may be formed into cippropnate sizes and shapes suitablc for emanation surfaces having cross sections with an area of l0rnm2- 500mm', and preferably 25mm2-400mm' and more preferably 50mm2-300mnY, and most preferably 50mm2 -250mm2.
The balsa wood transfer material of the present invention may be formed into appropriate sizes and shapes suitable for emanatnn urfaces having lengtns or 1cm -150cm and preferably Scm 100cm, and more preferably 10cm -50cm, and even most preferably 10cm 25cm.
The balsa wood transfer material of the present invention may be formed into appropriate sizes and shapes suitable for emanation sUrfaces having widths of 1mm -500mm and preferably 2mm -200mm and more preferably 3mm-luomm and o\en most preferably Mini -50mm Preferably where the balsa wood transfer material is elongate, such as with rod or sheet shapes and the like. the elongate aspect of the transfer material is substantially co-axial with the grain of the balsa wood.
The emanation devices of the present invention may he provided with ir cuculaton means wherein said means are airanged to urge air in tise towad and/or away and/or throuqn the batsa wood transfer material and/or the separate emanation surface in order to increase the rate of emanation of volatile liquid therefrom -The transfer materials of the present invention may be provided with one or more apertures therein and/or thereth rough in order to increase the rate of emanation of volatile liquid therefrom.
Descriotion of an Embodiment Embodiments of the invention will now be descnbed by way of eni pIe only toe following thise volatile liquids were tested with balsa wood transfer materials according to the present invention compared against conventional cellulose wicks.
