Abstract

An isolated perch 4 is attached on top of another perch 5 via two supports 3. Each support 3 includes a downward facing bowl 1 which is supported above the second perch 5 and below the isolated perch 4. The interior surfaces of the bowls 1 are coated with a non drying adhesive to prevent insects and pests gaining access to the isolated perch. The supports 3 are preferably bolts secured via nuts 6 that pass through a predrilled hole in the base of a downward facing bowl 1.

Description

Poultry perch This invention relates to an isolated mite free perch.
When poultry roost at night they often become vulnerable to nocturnal red mites. These mites will crawl onto the perch where poultry are roosting and then onto the poultry themselves to suck their blood. This can mean the spread of any disease already present from bird to bird through contaminated blood. The birds may become anaemic and stressed, resulting in lost egg production, and in severe cases death. At present red mite infestations are dealt with by using chemical powders and sprays which on occasion have been found in the human food chain.
To overcome this the present invention proposes an isolated perch attached on top of another perch by the use of two supports at a sufficient height to accommodate a downward facing bowl on each support between the two perches, said bowls are coated on the interior surface with a non drying adhesive to act as a mite barrier.
The isolated perch ensures that there are no means of access for the red mites to reach the roosting poultry. Preferably each support is a bolt of sufficient length although supports may be in the form of metal, wood or plastic dowels.
Preferably a stop of sufficient size to prevent roosting poultry from coming into contact with any part of the coop interior is attached to each end of the isolated perch.
An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawing.
Figi shows an isolated perch attached on top of another perch according to the invention.
In figure 1 an isolated perch 4 includes a stop 2 screwed onto each end, the isolated perch 4 is then attached on top of another perch 5 by the use of two bolts 3. Each bolt 3 goes through a predrilled hole in the isolated perch 4 which is held firmly in place by the use of a nut 6.
Each bolt 3 is then inserted through a predrilled hole in the base of a bowl 1.Said bowls 1 are supported in a downward facing position by the use of a nut 6. Each bolt is then inserted through a predrilled hole in another perch 5 and held firmly in place by the use of two nuts 6. Each downward facing bowl 1 is then coated on the interior surface with a non drying adhesive to act as a mite barrier.

Claims (9)

  1. Claims 1 An isolated perch attached on top of another perch by the use of two supports at a sufficient height to accommodate a downward facing bowl on each support between the two perches, said bowls are coated on the interior surface with a non drying adhesive to act as a mite barrier.
  2. 2 An isolated perch according to claim 1 in which the isolated perch has a stop at each end of sufficient size to prevent poultry from coming into contact with any part of the interior of the coop.
  3. 3 An isolated perch according to claim 1 in which the isolated perch is of sufficient length so no contact is made between said perch and anything else except the two supports.
  4. 4 An isolated perch according to claim 1 in which each support goes through a predrilled hole in the base of a downward facing bowl so said bowls completely surround each support.
  5. An isolated perch according to claim 1 in which each support may be in the form of a bolt of sufficient length.
  6. 6 An isolated perch according to claim 1 in which each support may be in the form of a metal, wood or plastic dowel.
  7. 7 An isolated perch according to claim 1 in which each downward facing bowl may be supported by a retaining nut if bolts are used as supports.
  8. 8 An isolated perch according to claim 6 in which each downward facing bowl may be supported by rubber grommets if dowels are used as supports.
  9. 9 An isolated perch according to claim 1 in which each support may be coated with a non drying adhesive and a downward facing bowl may act as a dust cover
