Abstract
A portable dumb-bell spotting device comprises two main dumbbell holders 6 attached to two vertical arms 2 and two horizontal legs 3 which may have two additional dumbbell holders 7. The two horizontal legs 3 may fold outward for use or inwards for storage (figure 11) and are locked in place by brake 9. Once the user is in position on an exercise bench located between the legs 3, the user may pivot the vertical arms 2 forward allowing the user to remove the dumb-bells from holders 6. Once the dumb-bells have been removed from holder 6 the arms 2 return to a vertical position. The device may include wheels (12 figure 1) underneath the horizontal legs 3 to make the device portable.
Description
I
Portable Self-Spotting Device The invention relates to a portable self-spotting device which provides a stable base from which dumbbells can be lifted.
When exercising with dumbbells, the exerciser must get the dumbbells into a lifting position themselves then lift the weight. This subjects the individual to a greater risk of injury, especially when lowering the dumbbells to the ground after use. To solve this problem, the present invention provides a base from which dumbbells can be taken. The pivoting arm reduces the stress on the shoulders by allowing the weights to be lifted from an overhead position. The present invention further comprises two holders at the side where dumbbells can be placed should the exerciser not be able to lift them. In addition, the invention folds together, allowing for easy, space-saving storage.
The portable self-spotting device is positioned around a weightlifting bench. The legs, which comprise the side dumbbell holders, are extended out. A brake is then applied to lock the legs in place and to prevent the device from moving when in use. The arms directly above the bench are adjusted to accommodate the size of the exerciser.
Dumbbells are placed in the dumbbell holders. Once in lifting position, the exerciser takes the dumbbells from the holders after pivoting the anns forwards. Once the dumbbells have been taken, the arms pivot back. After the exercise has been completed, the dumbbells are returned to the holders above or into the dumbbell holders at the side.

Adjustable arms 4 move vertically inside the vertical pivoting arms and are secured in place by a stop 11 and have the main dumbbell supports 6 attached to them. Side dumbbell supports 7 are attached to adjustable arms 5 which move vertically and are attached to vertical arms 8 and are locked in place by a stop 10.
These vertical arms are attached to the horizontal legs. The horizontal legs fold in and out for easy storage and are locked in place by a brake 9 which is pushed down and twisted to lock. The brake also stops the device from moving when in use. The device is made portable by wheels 12 located under the horizontal legs of the device.
