Abstract
An electrical isolator, for instance for a mains-powered smoke detector, includes a housing 114 containing a circuit board 102. The circuit board includes connectors for connection to a mains supply and to a smoke detector, and also an indicator lamp and a switch 108. When the switch is off the smoke detector is electrically isolated from electrical power and the indicator lamp is extinguished, and when the switch is on the indicator lamp is lit and power is provided to the smoke detector. The isolator also includes a light unit 128 attached to the housing with electrical connection to the mains supply and to a light bulb 126. The lighting unit and the circuit board are connected to the mains supply in parallel, so that when the switch is off the electrical connection of the lighting unit to the mains supply is unaffected. Thus if the smoke detector is defective, the switch can be turned off causing current to cease to flow to the smoke detector and the indicator lamp will extinguish, indicating that it is now safe to work on the smoke detector. The light bulb will remain on, creating an easier working environment.
Description
Patent Application of Osman Hasan for Pendant Isolation Unit
Field of Invention
This invention relates in general to electrical isolators, and more particularly to isolators for smoke detectors.
Background of the Invention
Smoke detectors are an important safety feature of industrial and domestic premises, and provide an early warning of the presence of fire by detecting smoke particles.
Smoke detectors are generally fitted to ceilings, often on halls, landings and stairwells. It can be inconvenient to replace batteries when premises have many smoke alarms, or if they are in difficult to access positions. In such instances smoke alarms that draw on mains power may be used. Such alarms must be first isolated before maintenance, but if the alarms are powered from the lighting circuit, turning off the appropriate electric circuit turns off the lights.
Disclosure of Invention
From the foregoing, it may be appreciated that a need has arisen for an electrical isolator for a smoke alarm isolator unit which allows the lighting circuit to remain switched on when the alarm is being maintained.
The electrical isolator includes a housing inside of which is a circuit board. The circuit board includes connectors providing electrical connection to a mains supply and to a smoke detector. It also has an indicator lamp and a switch. When the switch is off the smoke detector is electrically isolated from electrical power and the indicator lamp is extinguished, and when the switch is on the indicator lamp is lit and electrical power is provided via the electrical connection to the smoke detector. The electrical isolator also includes a light unit attached to the housing and having electrical connection to the mains supply and to a light bulb. The lighting unit and the circuit board are connected to the mains supply in parallel, so that when the switch is off the smoke detector is electrically isolated from electrical power but the electrical connection of the lighting unit to the mains supply is unaffected.
In a further embodiment the electrical isolator additionally includes a buzzer so that when the smoke detector has a fault, the buzzer is sounded, alerting the user to the fault.
This means that if the smoke detector is defective, the switch is turned off and current will cease to flow to the smoke detector and the indicator lamp will extinguish. This is an indication that it is now safe to work on the smoke detector. The light bulb will remain on, creating an easier working environment.
Brief Description of Drawings
For a more complete explanation of the present invention and the technical advantages thereof, reference is now made to the following description and the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows an which shows an electrical isolator of the present invention; Figure 2 shows a housing which encases component parts of the electrical isolator of the present invention; and Figure 3 shows an example of a lighting unit attached to the electrical isolator of the present invention.
Best Mode for Carrying Out the Invention
Embodiments of the present invention and their technical advantages may be better understood by referring to Figure 1.
Referring to Figure 1, which shows an electrical isolator (100) having a circuit board (102), a first connector (104) provides an electrical connection to the mains supply and a second connector (106) provides an electrical connection to the smoke detector (not shown) A switch (108) and an indicator lamp (110) are connected to the circuit board. When the switch is on', the isolator supplies mains power to the smoke detector. When the switch is off', the isolator isolates the smoke detector from the mains supply. The indicator lamp is lit only when mains power is being supplied to the smoke detector. Preferably the indicator lamp is an LED. Preferably the switch is a slider switch.
A buzzer (112) is connected to the printed circuit board. When the isolator detects a fault condition in the smoke detector, the buzzer sounds, alerting the user to the fault.
Referring now to Figure 2, which shows a housing (114) which encases the circuit board and its components, a grille (116) allows sound from the buzzer to be heard, and a screen (118) for the indicator lamp allows the indicator lamp to be seen from outside the housing. The switch is accessible from the outside of the housing.
Referring now to Figure 3, which shows one example of a lighting unit (128) attached to the isolator, a ceiling rose base (120) sits within the housing and his held in place by a ceiling rose cap (122) which is attached to the housing, either via a screw thread around its perimeter, or by fixing screws.
Cable from a bulb holder (124) passes through the rose and is connected and anchored to the ceiling rose base, as is conventional with ceiling fitments.
The ceiling rose base is of conventional construction and has a first connector providing an electrical connection to a mains supply and a second connector providing an electrical connection to a light. The ceiling rose base and the isolator circuit board are connected to the mains in parallel.
Thus the operation of the switch for the lighting unit does not affect the smoke detector, and isolating the smoke alarm by means of the switch has no affect on the lighting unit.
When the smoke detector is faulty and the isolator detects the fault condition, the buzzer inside the housing will sound to warn the user. To fix the smoke detector, switch (108) is turned off. Current will cease to flow to the smoke detector and indicator lamp (110) will extinguish. This is an indication that it is now safe to work on the smoke detector. Light bulb (126) will remain on, creating an easier working environment. When the smoke detector is fixed, switch (108) is turned on, and indicator lamp (110) will light. This warns the user that current is flowing again to the detector.
