Abstract

Vehicles, handling.-A garage for motor vehicles is composed of compartments of just sufficient dimensions each to take a car, superposed in two vertical columns at each side of a lift shaft 2, the cars being driven on to carriages in a space 3<1>, transferred to the lift and thence to the compartments they are to occupy where the carriages are supported on rails 5. The carriages are stored in basement compartments 7, 8 at the base of the structure. The transhipping gear comprises cranks 14, oscillating levers 16, and fingers 21 on the carriage at each side, the arrangement being such that on oscillation of the cranks by means of gearing from a motor 24, the levers are oscillated and slots 17 in the levers engage the fingers 21 and move the carriage, three oscillations being necessary to complete the transfer. A separate set of cranks, levers, and fingers are provided for the transfer of the carriage back to the lift and the control is by magnetic clutch 27 disposed on the countershaft 29, Fig. 12. In an alternative arrangement cranks 54, 54<1> are rotated from a motor 62 and are adapted to operate alternately slotted levers 48, 48<1> respectively which are connected to links 38, 38<1> each twice the length of a lever and with one end mounted to slide axially of the lift so that the other end 37 of each has a straight line motion approximately transversely of the cage. The ends of the links are adapted to be engaged by sockets on the bottom of the carriage so that the carriage is transported to and from the cage according to whether the crank 54 or 54<1> is in operation on its respective coacting lever. To prevent movement of the vehicle on the carriage and the carriage on the rails 5 recesses are provided in the carriage surface and on the rails to receive the vehicle and carriage wheels respectively.
