Abstract

A central tyre inflation system is provided for a vehicle having a plurality of wheel hub assemblies (g). The system includes means for the controlled supply of compressed air to a chamber within each of the wheel hub assemblies (g). Each chamber is bounded by seals (c and d) that act between a stub axle tube (b) and a hub extension (a).

Description

CENTRAL TYRE INFLATION SYSTEMS
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to central tyre inflation systems for motor vehicles.
On motor vehicles, it is desirable to check and adjust the tyre pressures regularly and to set the tyre pressures at different values according to the load carried on the vehicle, the type of terrain over which the vehicle is being driven and the speed at which the vehicle is expected to travel. On certain types of vehicle, particularly all-terrain vehicles, it is desirable that pressure adjustment can be carried out automatically and while the vehicle is moving.
A system for carrying out such pressure adjustment is known as a central tyre inflation system and comprises a compressed air source and a control module.
It is necessary, as part of this system, to provide a pneumatic connection between each rotating wheel and its axle. This is typically achieved by means of a rotary joint that includes a first component that rotates with the wheel and a second, stationary component that is fixed to the axle.
Two seals act between the first and second components and a chamber is defined between the two seals. Ports or openings are formed in the first and second components to provide access to the chamber.
If the axle is hollow, the connection to the stationary component may be made through the hollow axle, but this can be difficult to achieve when drive is provided by a rotating drive shaft passing through the hollow axle.
A piped connection to the stationary component may alternatively be made outside the wheel, but the piped connection will be vulnerable to mechanical damage when the vehicle is driven off-road.
It is accordingly an object of the present invention to provide an improved vehicle central tyre inflation system.
A more specific objection of the present invention is to provide an improved vehicle wheel hub assembly.
Summary of the Invention
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a central tyre inflation system for a vehicle having a plurality of wheel hub assemblies, the system including means for the controlled supply of compressed air to a chamber within each of the wheel hub assemblies, and each chamber being bounded by seals that act between a stub axle tube and a hub extension.
The stub axle tubes and the associated hub extensions are preferably provided with inlet and outlet ports formed by drilling for the flow of compressed air into and out of the chambers.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a vehicle wheel hub assembly for a vehicle, the wheel hub assembly including a chamber to which compressed air can be supplied and from which the compressed air can be delivered, and the chamber being bounded by seals that act between a stub axle tube and a hub extension.
Brief Description of the Drawing
The single figure of the accompanying drawing is a sectional view of a vehicle wheel hub assembly.
Description of the Preferred Embodiment
The wheel hub assembly shown in the drawing comprises a drive shaft f that transmits drive to a wheel hub e that is rotatable relative to a stub axle tube b. A wheel bearing assembly g is disposed between the wheel hub e and the stub axle tube b to permit free rotation of the wheel hub e relative to the stub axle tube b.
A hub extension a is attached to the wheel hub e and two seals c and d act between the hub extension a and the stub axle tube b. Seal c is an outer seal and seal d is an inner seal and a chamber between the hub extension a and the stub axle tube b is defined by the two seals c and d, which are of generally U-shape in cross-section, as can be seen from the drawing. This chamber is connected to a compressed air supply (not shown) via an inlet port h in the form of a hole drilled in the stub axle tube b. The chamber is also connected to the interior of a tyre fitted on the wheel hub e via an outlet port j in the form of a hole drilled in the hub extension a.
A control module (not shown) on the vehicle controls the supply of compressed air to the chamber between the two seals c and d in dependence on, for example, the vehicle speed, the load being carried by the vehicle and the nature of the terrain over which the vehicle is being driven.
The hub extension a that carries the inner seal d and the outer seal c is a separate component and thus can be made of a different material from the hub e, more specifically a lighter material thus providing a weight-saving advantage. If a vehicle does not have a central tyre inflation system, the same components can be used for manufacture of the wheel assembly, apart from the hub extension a and the two seals c and d. The use of common components simplifies manufacturing procedures and reduces costs.
The inlet port h and the outlet port j are formed by straight bores that can be formed by simple drilling operations, without the need for cross-drilling or plugs, again providing cost-saving advantages.
