Abstract

A bonfire pit includes a dish-shaped fire pit 102, a circular firewood shelf 104 resting inside the pit, a flat circular lid 106, and a flat circular cover 108. The bonfire pit fits in a dish-shaped hole in a garden with the cover 108 substantially flush with the surface so that when not in use the pit is hidden. Tabs 110 support the firewood shelf and concentric circular lips 112,114 support the lid and cover. The cover has folding handles 116 for lifting. The fire pit, shelf and lid can be steel, and the cover wood. The cover can be turned into a table with folding legs (118, fig 2). The parts can be supplied as a kit of parts.

Description

Sunken Bonfire Pit
Field of Invention
This invention relates to a bonfire pit, in particular a bonfire pit that is located in a hole in a garden area or other recreational space, the hole being of sufficient depth that the cover is substantially flush with the garden surface.
Background of the Invention
Many small gardens and recreational spaces do not have sufficient room for a bonfire pit. For example, if most of the area of the garden is a play area for children, a permanent feature may get damaged. Furthermore, if most of the garden area is ornamental, a permanent bonfire pit may destroy the aesthetic look of the garden design.
Disclosure of Invention
From the foregoing, it may be appreciated that a need has arisen for a bonfire pit which can be hidden when not in use.
The bonfire pit of the present invention includes a dish-shaped fire pit, a circular firewood shelf able to rest inside the pit, a circular lid able to rest on the firewood shelf, and a circular cover able to rest on the lid.
The bonfire pit fits in a dish-shaped hole in a garden area or other recreational space. The hole is of sufficient depth that the cover is substantially flush with the garden surface. This means that when not in use the bonfire pit is hidden. In one embodiment the bonfire pit has support tabs for the firewood shelf and concentric circular lips to support the lid and the cover. The cover includes folding handles on its topside to facilitate its removal from the fire pit. Typically the fire pit, the firewood shelf and the lid comprise steel, and the cover comprises wood. In another embodiment the cover is a folding table, and has folding legs located on its underside and secured by a clip. The cover may be used as a table by removing it from the bonfire pit and deploying the folding legs. The invention also encompasses a kit for a bonfire pit, which includes one or more of a dish-shaped fire pit, a circular firewood shelf, a circular lid, and a circular cover. In one embodiment of the kit, the cover is a circular table having folding legs secured by a clip.
Brief Description of Drawings
For a more complete explanation of the present invention and the technical advantages thereof, reference is now made to the following description and the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows a bonfire pit of the present invention; and Figure 2 shows an embodiment of the present invention in which the cover is a
folding table.
Best Mode for Carrying Out the Invention
Embodiments of the present invention and their technical advantages may be better understood by referring to Figure 1, which shows a bonfire pit (100) of the present invention. The bonfire pit includes a dish-shaped fire pit (102), a circular firewood shelf able to rest inside the pit (104), a circular lid (106) able to rest on the firewood shelf, and a circular cover able to rest on the lid. The bonfire pit fits in a dish-shaped hole in a garden area or other recreational space. The hole is of sufficient depth that the cover is substantially flush with the garden surface. This means that when not in use the bonfire pit is hidden.
In one embodiment the bonfire pit has two or more support tabs (110) that support the firewood shelf.
In a further embodiment the bonfire pit has circular lip (112) and the lid rests on the lip.
In a further embodiment the bonfire pit has a circular lip (114) outside of and concentric with the one supporting the lid, and the cover rests on the second lip.
Preferably, the fire pit, the firewood shelf and the lid comprise steel, and the cover comprises wood.
In a further embodiment the cover includes folding handles (116) on its topside to facilitate its removal from the fire pit.
Referring now to Figure 2, which shows an embodiment of the present invention in which the cover is a folding table, the cover includes folding legs (118) located on its underside so that the cover may be used as a table by removing it from the bonfire pit and deploying the folding legs. Preferably the folding legs are held in place against the underside of the cover by one or more clips (120) The present invention also encompasses a kit for a bonfire pit. The kit includes one or more of a dish-shaped fire pit, a circular firewood shelf, a circular lid, and a circular cover.
In one embodiment of the kit, the cover is a circular table having folding legs secured by a clip.
