Description

Patent Application for Soft animal wound protection hood
Background of the Invention
[1] The present invention relates to animals from scratching a wound. Wound protection hoods are known in the art.
An example of the most common type of hood can be found in DE 19629581 to Strzybny-Luis, which discloses a protective hood in the form of a truncated cone which has an inner part which is positioned against the animals coat and a connected outer part.
The two parts are fastened together by a connecting thread which runs around their circumferences. The hood is held securely in place on the animal by straps. The two parts of the hood may be made from different materials which have different stiffnesses.
The inner part may be made from a stiff material such as plastic sheet which is wrapped around the animal's neck. The outer part can be made from a deformable material able to bend about the connecting join between the two parts. Thus the hood is rigid in a longitudinal direction with respect to the animal, but deformable in a transverse direction.
[21 In another example, US 7523720 to Lecy discloses a substantially cylindrical mesh pet hood which allows an animal, with or without a snout or nose, to see relatively unencumbered through the hood while preventing oral contact of the animal with its surroundings. The mesh is most preferably a soft and lightweight plastic. The hood is laced about the animal's neck region, and preferably includes a connection to a harness or other reliable anchor. A most preferred embodiment of the pet hood further accommodates various sizes of hoods, such as small, medium and large, without requiring retooling, and only requiring three distinct components.
[3] DE 202006009954 to Bludau discloses a protective cap for a dog or cat to be worn after an ear operation or the like, which comprises three segments made from a strong, watertight material, and held together by a collar. The central segment is rectangular with slightly inwardly curved lateral edges. The side segments are oval and fitted with elastic bands along the front edges. The collar is guided through a tunnel provided at the rear of the central segment. Strips of Velcro sewn to one of the lateral parts can be joined with complementary strips at the opposite part when the cap is attached to the head of the animal.
The segments comprise leather or plastic and may be upholstered in their interior.
Brief SLumnary of the Invention [4] It can be seen from the forgoing that there is an established need for a means of preventing animals from scratching a facial wound. It would be advantageous to pet owners and the like if this means could be comfortable and enable the animal to rest and sleep in comfort without removing it. It would be further advantageous if the protection means would be easy to put on the animal, since the animal may resist wearing such an item.
[5] It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a wound protection hood for an animal which is easy to put on an animal and enables an animal to rest while wearing it.
[6] To this end, disclosed is a hood for protecting a facial wound of an animal, comprising a soft truncated cone having a smaller end for admitting an animal neck, and a larger end.
[7] An advantage of the present invention is that it is soft and deformable and thus enables an animal to rest and sleep while wearing it, but is hard enough that the animal cannot cause damage to a facial wound through it. A yet further advantage is that it is easy to put on the animal. Furthermore, it can be adjusted to fit many sizes of animal.
Brief Description of the Several Views of the Drawing [8] The invention can be better understood with reference to the following drawings, in which: [9] Figure 1 shows the preferred embodiment of the hood.
Detailed Description of the Invention
[10] In a preferred embodiment of the invention, shown in Figure 1, a hood for protecting a facial wound of an animal is disclosed, comprising a soft truncated cone 100 having a smaller end for admitting an animal neck, and a larger end.
[11] The truncated cone preferably comprises padded or quilted cotton although it may be other soft materials. An advantage of this is that it is soft enough to enable an animal to rest on it comfortably while hard enough to prevent the animal from scratching a facial wound.
[12] The hood preferably comprises a washable cover 102 of cotton or the like, which is stitched around the smaller end of said truncated cone, whereby the hood can be kept clean. The area covered by the washable cover may comprise extra padding, which may be cotton padding, to provide additional comfort to the animal.
[13] The hood preferably further comprises a drawstring 106 around the smaller end of the cone, whereby the diameter of the smaller end can be adjusted to fit different sized animals. The drawstring preferably comprises thread tape, since this is flatter than the conventional cord used in drawstrings, and will provide additional comfort to the animal. Preferably, the cone comprises a gap 104 to enable the hood to be easily slipped over the animal's head. The drawstring can then be adjusted for a snug fit around the neck. An advantage of this is that it enables the hood to be put on the animal more easily, which is especially necessary since animals may resist wearing the hood.
[1411 An example of suitable dimensions for the hood are as follows: the smaller end of the cone may have a diameter of 4 inches, and the gap may be 1 inches long. This is suitable for an average sized cat. Alternatively, there may be other dimensions for other sizes of cats or other animals, such as dogs or the like.
