Abstract

The clamp, which may be attached to a lamp apparatus 9, includes an upper jaw 1 and a lower jaw 2 fixed by a pivot 7. A spring 8 forces the jaws together. The tightening mechanism includes a threaded nut 3, a threaded rod 4 and a handle 5. The handle allows the rod to be screwed through the nut and onto the underside surface of the upper jaw. The force applied by the rod brings the upper jaw and lower jaw together to grip a clamping surface securely. Once attached, the mechanism allows the spring clamp to grip to surfaces without relying on the strength of the spring.

Description

Spring Clamp with Tightening Mechanism
Description:
[001] The present invention relates to a spring clamp and in particular to the mechanical method of locking the spring clamp securely to an object.
[002] Spring Clamps enable quick & easy attachment to a table, shelf or other object.
In this instance a spring clamp has been mounted onto a lamp apparatus. The spring clamp allows easy positioning and removal of the task lamp from a table, shelf or vertical object.
[003] Typically, a spring clamp relies on the strength of the spring to hold itself and the item it is mounted onto to an object. The stronger the spring, the tighter it grips the object it is clamped to.
[004] However, the stronger the spring the greater the force is required to open the jaws of the clamp to remove it or reposition it. In practice it is difficult for a spring to provide sufficient force to hold the clamp securely and prevent it moving when re-positioning the lamp apparatus.
[005] The intention of the present invention is therefore to provide an improved way for the spring clamp to grip and lock tightly onto an object, but at the same time be easy to open, take off and reposition.
[006] According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a pivoting clamp comprising of two jaws and a spring. There is a threaded rod that passes through a threaded hole in the lower jaw of the clamp. The rod can be screwed in and out by the means of a handle.
[007] The threaded rod can be tightened against the upper jaw, the force applied upon tightening of the threaded rod forces the lower and upper jaw to squeeze together.
[008] The resulting action of tightening the threaded rod causes the upper and lower jaw to grip tightly around the object it is clamped to. The resulting force is independent of the spring force and as such the clamp is no longer reliant on the spring tension to hold onto an object.
[009] Preferably the jaws of the spring clamp will have soft rubber inserts to assist with gripping the clamping surface.
[010] Once attached, the spring clamp with the threaded rod tightened by means of a handle will grip the clamping surface tightly and the lamp apparatus can be moved without the spring clamp moving.
[011] An embodiment of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which: [012] Figure 1 shows the elements of the spring clamp according to the present invention.
[013] Figure 2 shows a side view according to the present invention.
[014] The spring clamp itself comprises an upper jaw (1), a lower jaw (2), a threaded nut (3), a threaded rod (4) and a handle (5). The jaws (1) and (2) also have rubber pads (6) to grip the clamping surface. A lamp apparatus (9) is attached to the spring clamps upper jaw.
[015] The upper jaw 1 and the lower jaw 2 attach together by the means of a pivot (7) and are forced closed by the spring (8).
[116] Once clamped to a surface the handle (5) and threaded rod (4) are screwed through the threaded nut(3) and onto the underside surface of the upper jaw (1).
[117] The force applied by the threaded rod (4) brings the upper jaw (1) & lower jaw (2) together and the spring clamp grips the clamping surface securely.

Claims (6)

  1. Claims: 1. A spring clamp comprising of an upper and lower jaw fixed by a pivot.
  2. 2. A spring clamp with a spring to force the upper and lower jaws together.
  3. 3. A spring clamp with a threaded nut in the lower jaw and a threaded rod that passes through the nut and tightens against the upper jaw. A handle is present to tighten the threaded rod.
  4. 4. A spring clamp that can be tightened securely onto objects by a threaded rod with a handle.
  5. 5. A spring clamp that can securely clamp to objects without relying on the spring tension.
  6. 6. A spring clamp substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
