Description
Patent Application of Christopher Gillespie for Microwavable helical hair curlers with helical hair guide
Background of the Invention
[1] The present invention relates to hair curlers, and in particular to hair curlers which can be heated in a microwave.
[2] Nicrowavable hair rollers are known in the art. For example, US 6352080 to Neville discloses a microwave heatable hair curler comprised of a pair of rigid, hollow, concentric cylinders sealed at both ends to create an annular space therebetween, with a heat absorbent gel contained in this annular space. The gel is capable of being heated in a microwave oven to a hair curling temperature and capable of maintaining such temperature for a time sufficient for hair curling to take place.
The gel contains a biocide whereby it can be permanently sealed in the curler.
[3] US 4710609 to Switlicki discloses a process for heating a water-filled hair curler having walls constructed of a plastic material transparent to microwave and impermeable to water vapor and containing a mass of wicking material, such as an open cell form rubber, permeable to microwave energy. The process includes the steps of: (1) dispersing a quantity of water into the wicking material through a filling hole at an end of the curler and (2) subjecting the curler to microwave energy in a conventional microwave oven to heat the water dispersed in the wicking material and thereby heat the curler. The filling hole is left open to provide a vent allowing escape of steam to insure that excessive pressures are not generated within the curler during the heating process.
[4] Such hair rollers with means for retaining the hair are known in the art. US 4538630 to Henderson, for example, discloses a hair winder spool containing a lossy dielectric material and a heat sink material. The spooi is rapidly heated in a microwave oven to hair curling and drying temperatures which are maintained for a sufficient length of time to dry and curl hair wound around the spool. The spool is a hollow molded low loss dielectric plastics material spindle with hair retaining protuberances and radially projecting end flanges. The interior of the spindle is filled with a heat sink material having a melting point temperature within the range desired for drying and curling the hair wound around the spindle and also having a high heat of fusion.
[5] It is further known in the art, for example in, GB 1282756 to Laing, to have a hinged lever rotatably mounted on a roller, or a bar slidably and rotatably mounted on a roller, to grip the hair being curled.
Brief Sunary of the Invention [6] It can be seen from the forgoing that a need has arisen for a fast and easy way to curl hair using microwavable curlers, which holds the ends of the hair. It would be advantageous if the hair could be curled continuously to the very end of the hair.
[7] It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide microwavable hair curlers which are easy to use and which produce a continuous curl to the very end of the hair.
[81 To this end, a hair curler is disclosed comprising: a cylindrical body having an external surface; a helical protrusion around and along the external surface of the cylindrical body for guiding hair strands; a helical groove around and along the external surface of the cylindrical body for retaining hair strands; and a clip having a length shorter than the cylindrical body and an internal profile matching but slightly larger than the external surface profile of the cylindrical body; whereby said clip can fit over and twist up and down the cylindrical body.
[91 An advantage of the present invention is that hair is curled continuously to the end of the hair, eliminating the problem of straight ends often associated with hair curlers. A further advantage is that the end can be clasped to the curler at any point along the curler. A further advantage is that a conventional microwave oven can be used rather than specific heating apparatus. A yet further advantage is that the apparatus is cheap to produce. A further advantage is that the clip provides a dual function of clasping the hair ends and holding the roller in place on the head.
Brief Description of the Several Views of the Drawing [10] The invention can be better understood with reference to the following drawings, in which: [11] Figure 1 shows the roller of the present invention from a frontal view.
[12] Figure 2 shows the clip of the present invention.
[13] Figure 3 shows an isometric view of the roller and clip of the present invention.
Detailed Description of the Invention
[14] In a preferred embodiment of the invention, shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 wherein like numerals refer to like components, a hair curler is disclosed comprising: a cylindrical body 100 having an external surface; a helical protrusion 102 around and along the external surface of the cylindrical body for guiding hair strands; a helical groove 104 around and along the external surface of the cylindrical body for retaining hair strands; and a clip 106 having a length shorter than the cylindrical body and an internal profile matching but slightly larger than the external surface profile of the cylindrical body; whereby said clip can fit over and twist up and down the cylindrical body.
[15] A user heats the curlers in a conventional microwave oven until hot. Hair is then curled around the curler, in the groove. The clip is either pushed over the protrusion until it flexes and snaps onto the roller, or twisted onto the top of the roller with a screwing motion. The clip can then be twisted up and down the roller easily without disturbing the hair therein, and can be used both to hold the roller in place on the head and to ensure, due to its shape, that the ends of the hair do not protrude from the roller but rather remain aligned with the groove. In this way the present invention has an advantage over the prior art, since it produces more realistic curls having an even curl to the very ends of the hair. A further advantage is that the clip can be moved to any location on the roller, therefore the hair ends do not have to be positioned on a particular part of the roller to take advantage of this feature.
[161 Preferably, the curler groove comprises ventilation holes 108 which are preferably evenly spaced as shown in the figure, in order to allow the hair to dry evenly by allowing air to pass through the hair during drying. The hair may be dried using a hair dryer, left to dry naturally, or dried by other means known in the art. Furthermore, the clip preferably comprises ventilation holes 110 disposed to be adjacent to the ventilation holes of the cylindrical body when the clip is fitted over the cylindrical body. This has the same advantages as the ventilation holes in the curler. Alternatively only one component may comprise ventilation holes, or there may be no ventilation holes.
[17] The apparatus preferably further comprises a hook at an end of the cylindrical body for gathering and retaining a strand of hair. Preferably the hook is shaped as shown in the figures although it may have other shapes capable of retaining the hair for long enough to twist it onto the roller. An advantage of the hook is that it facilitates twisting the hair onto the roller.
The hook may be disposed at either or both ends of the roller.
[18] The external surface of the curler preferably has an anti-slip texture. Preferably, the surface comprises a ridged texture, with ridges running substantially parallel to the groove. An advantage of this is that the ridges trap the hair against the roller, retaining it in place while curling takes place. Alternatively, the surface may be textured with small nodules. The nodules are preferably arranged in a grid pattern over the external surface of the roller, such that approximately -10 nodules lie across the width of the helical groove, although there may be more or less nodules. The nodules also act to prevent the hair unraveling from around the roller. While this is less effective than the ridges, an advantage is that less material is required to produce this surface finish. An advantage of the previous two surface finishes is that only one material is required to produce the roller. As a further alternative, the roller may comprise a rubberized material applied to the surface, to retain the hair thereon.
[19] The curler may be manufactured from polypropylene or other polymer having a ceramic coating to at least part of the external surface. An advantage of this is that the ceramic conducts heat better than the polymer and disperses it evenly to the hair. For example, the groove may be coated in a ceramic material, since this part is the closest to the hair to be curled. Furthermore, all of the external surface may have a ceramic coating. The clip may also have a ceramic coating to further aid in heat retention, or alternatively the clip may comprise polypropylene or other plastic or other flexible material.
[20] Alternatively the curler (and/or clip) may be manufactured from a matrix of a polymer and an electromagnetic material such as powdered iron. An advantage of this is that it decreases the time taken for the roller to heat in the microwave to the desired temperature.
[21] Alternatively the curler and clip may comprise any other suitable material and may be heated by any means. The distinguishing feature of the invention is the shape of the curler and associated clip.
