Abstract

A door restraint comprising a pivotal arm 4 having a door stop member 5 is mounted above a door and can be rotated between a parked position in which it does not obstruct the opening of a door and an active position in which it blocks opening of the door beyond a predetermined distance. The door stop member 5 may have a plastic pad 8 for contact with the door and an elongate pole 9 acting as a handle for manually moving the door restraint between inactive and active positions. The device can be installed on the lintel of the door to avoid alteration of uPVC doors and frames.

Description

Door Security Invention This invention relates to the provision of security to a partly opened UPVC framed door, preventing the intrusion of unwanted callers before being identified. This security device allows identification of a caller to an outside door of a house by limiting the opening gap of the door when the door latch is released.
Wooden framed doors can be secured by the usual chain and slider track which allows a gap of approximately 10cm. and allow identification of the caller but with plastic UPVC doors, chain and slider track are not suitable as the attachment of the metal would damage the door. My invention provides a means of allowing a 10cm. opening gap without degrading the construction of the door or the framework. It can be fitted after the door installation has been completed without altering or changing the door assembly.
A pivoted arm carrying the door stop bracket is swung around from the parked position with the manipulation arm through approximately 94 degrees to stop the door from opening more than 10cm. before unlatching the door. The pivoting arm carrying the stop bracket is secured to the lintel above the door, the measurement from the centre of the pivot to the bracket pad has to be 73mm. A precise position is required to allow the door to fully open also to provide the 10cm. gap. See figure 1 page 1 / 3. The stop bracket face which makes contact with the door has a plastic pad on it to prevent damage to the door.
The embodiment of the invention is described with reference to the following guidelines: The stop bracket can only be removed from the operating position to allow the door to be fully opened when the door has been returned to the door closed position, up against the door frame, by twisting the manipulating arm which puts the stop bracket back in the parked position.
The device fixing position on the lintel above the door is established with regard to the edge of the door in its closed, up against the door frame position. The device is put in the parked position with a gap between the edge of the door and the plastic pad on the door stop bracket of 1 mm. ensuring that the door opens freely. In the operating position opening the door moves the stop plate 5, figure 1/3 into the correct position automatically, due to the looseness of the pivot assembly and the pressure of the door on the bracket. The use of two 6mm.
diameter, 7cm. long, steel wood screws into holes with rawl plug inserts is recommended. With the arm mounting plate screwed into position the bracket mounting plate should swing easily from the parked position with the 1mm. gap to the device in the operating position.
In figure 1, page 1/3 the door lintel is 1. The door in the open 10 cm. position is 2. The stop bracket mounting arm 4 is pivoted on to the mounting plate 3 which is secured to the lintel by two screws 7 into rawl plugs. With the manipulating arm the device can be swung round to the parked position figure 2 page 1 / 3 with the door closed against the door frame to allow full opening of the door. Figure 3, page 2/3 shows the device in elevation in the parked position showing plastic pad 8 and the manipulation arm 9 which is 84cm. long and fixing bolt 10 with the door in the closed against the door frame state. The length of the manipulation arm would be suitable for a child to use.
The plastic pad on the stop bracket is of box section hollow centre to accommodate the bolt head of the bolt 10 in figure 5, page 3/3 securing the manipulation arm to the stop bracket.
The plastic pad is also glued to the bracket therefore ensuring that the plastic door frame is only in contact with the plastic pad at all times, see figure 4, page 3/3 and figure 5, page 3/3. The manipulation arm is a section of hollow fibre fishing rod which was found to be suitably light with a wood inner section at the securing end for strength. A twisting action of the device arm provides the movement required for the operation of the device.
The door has to be closed completely against the door frame to move the device from the operating position to the parked state to allow the door to be opened fully.

Page 2/3 Figure 5 Side elevation of Figure 4.
Page 3/3 Figure 6 An alternative one piece stop bracket swing arm Page 3/3 configuration.
Alternative Swing Arm U sing aluminium dye cast one piece stop bracket and swing arm, the arm mounting plate would not be required as it is in Figure 3.
The pivot would be by a substantial screw or coach screw which gives the best support for the swing arm but allows a free swing of parked to operating position and ensures that the gap between the edge of the door and the stop bracket pad is not compromised. The pivot boss, part of the arm at the pivot end needs to be substantial enough to prevent the arm from sagging, keeping the arm supported at the correct level. The screw shank should be a good fit in the arm boss. Dimensions will be determined by the gap between the top edge of the door and the underside of the lintel. The distance from stop pad to the centre of the pivot is 73mm. Using this method of fixing the arm will show the head of the pivot screw when the door is open by 10cm.
Therefore the screw slot or Allan key socket will need to be filled * or covered to prevent removal of the arm which would negate the security aspect of the device.
