Abstract

The invention is concerned with monitoring and reporting of backup activity on a computer system. Manager soft ware is known that receives from multiple nodes (12) on a system data which is to be backed up and which stores the data in mass storage devices (16) associated with a storage manager (server 10). Typically, the success, failure or other current status of a back up job is communicated from the client to the storage manager server merely through return codes and this approach can lead to a user being provided with erroneous or incomplete information. The present invention provides a home server (22) in communication with the clients which receives from the clients information generated by them relating to the backup jobs, parses this client information, and so provides the user with backup information concerning e.g. the success or failure of the client backup operations. More complete and reliable information can be consequently provided to the user.
