Abstract

A mail collector comprises a flexible web 1 with fasteners, such as rigid bars 3 having screw holes, for fastening the web above and below a mail slot 2 to define a pouch below the slot. The web is preferably a soft plastics or polymeric material and is preferably transparent. The mail collector pouch may have open sides and an end of the web may be configured so as to hang from the upper fastener and extend into the pouch. The mail collector prevents items of mail being deposited on the floor where they can cause persons to trip or slip and can be difficult to pick up. The use of a flexible soft for the pouch prevents damage being caused to an adjacent wall or user when a door having a mail slot to which the pouch is attached is opened.

Description

MAIL COLLECTOR
[0001] This invention relates to a mail collector for storing mail posted through a mail slot, e.g. a door mail slot.
[0002] The majority of homes have a mail slot in or adjacent a front door.
When mail is inserted through the s'ot it is deposited on the floor, where it can cause accidents, either to a person slipping on the mail or to a person picking up the mail if injured by the opening door. Certain persons also have difficulty picking up mail from the floor. Mail on the floor is unhygienic, and can be damaged or dirtied by human feet or by pets, and is messy.
[0003] Existing door mail collectors consist of rigid boxes made of metal or wood. Such collectors fulfil their function adequately but can be dangerous if fitted to the inside of a door. In particular they can cause damage to an adjacent wall or injury to a person when the door is opened.
[0004] It is an aim of the invention to provide a mail collector with enhanced safety and/or functionality.
[0005] The present invention provides a mail collector comprising a flexible web having means for fastening the web above and below a mail slot to define a pouch below the slot.
[0006] The web may be of polymeric material and may be transparent. The fastening means may comprise holes for screwing the mail collector to a door or wall, and may comprise upper and lower rigid bars. In an embodiment of the invention, the mail collector has open sides. An end of the web may be arranged to hang from the upper fastening means inside the pouch.
[0007] The invention will now be described in more detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing, the single figure of which is a schematic perspective view of a mail collector according to an embodiment of the invention.
[0008] The drawing shows a mail collector comprising a flexible transparent plastics web 1. The web is attached to a door above and below a mail slot 2.
To facilitate the attachment, the mail collector includes two rigid bars 3, one attached above and the other below the mail slot. Screws 4 are screwed through holes in the web 1 and the bars 3 into the door.
[0009] The web 1 hangs below the mail slot 2 and forms a pouch which holds any mail inserted through the mail slot. The mail can be seen through the web 1 and retrieved easily as the sides of the pouch are open.
[0010] Whilst the upper bar 3 could alternatively be attached at the end of the web, if attached at an intermediate point of the web 1 as shown, the hanging flap retains the mail in the pouch.
[0011] The soft, flexible web will not cause damage when the door is opened.

Claims (8)

  1. CLAIMS1. A mail collector comprising a flexible web having means for fastening the web above and below a mail slot to define a pouch below the slot.
  2. 2. A mail collector according to claim 1, wherein the web is of polymeric material.
  3. 3. A mail collector according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the web is transparent.
  4. 4. A mail collector according to claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the fastening means comprises holes for screwing the mail collector to a door or wall.
  5. 5. A mail collector according to any preceding claim, wherein the fastening means comprises upper and lower rigid bars.
  6. 6. A mail collector according to any preceding claim, wherein the mail collector has open sides. C)
  7. 7. A mail collector according to any preceding claim, wherein an end of the web is arranged to hang from the upper fastening means inside the pouch.
