Abstract

Insulating shroud 1 for an in-line electrical wire connector, the connector comprising an elongate metal body 6 with an axial bore 7 extending therethrough an a plurality of grub screws or shear bolts 10 mounted to extend radially adjustably into the axial bore for clamping electrical wires in the body. The shroud comprises an elongate plastic channel member having a generally U-shaped profile defined by a curved bottom portion 2 and a pair of parallel side portions 3. The free edges of the side portions are turned inwardly towards one another to form flanges 4 which overlie the top of the connector when the shroud is in position. The shroud may be formed of flexible material such that it can be snap fitted onto the connector from below.

Description

ELectrical Connectors The invention relates to a shroud for use with an in-line electrical wire connector of the kind comprising an elongate metal body with a bore extending axially therethrough and a plurality of grub screws or the like mounted to extend radially and adjustably into the bore for clamping electrical wires in the body.
Connectors of the type referred to above are often used in bunches on several wires or cables in close proximity within a larger connecting structure and must be held apart during assembly of the structure and thereafter to avoid electrical contact. Generally the connectors must be well spaced from one another in the structure and are subsequently held in place by a resin which is poured around the connectors and then sets to form a rigid, insulating barrier.
The electrician concerned may not always carry out this process correctly.
The present invention provides a primary insulation means that may be easily fitted onto the individual connectors so that strict adherence to the correct spacing of connectors is no longer essential.
Accordingly, the invention provides an insulating shroud for an in-line electrical wire connector of the kind comprising an elongate metal body with a bore extending axially therethrough and a plurality of grub screws or the like mounted to extend radially adjustably into the bore for clamping electrical wires in the body; the shroud comprising an elongate plastic channel member having a generally U-shaped profile defined by a bottom portion and a pair of parallel side portions; wherein the free edges of the side portions are turned inwardly towards one another to form flanges.

An embodiment of the invention is described below with reference to the * I I * 1 accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shroud; Figure 2 is an end view of the shroud; and ** S S I. S ** Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view showing the shroud in position on a connector.
As shown in the drawings, the shroud 1 is in the form of an elongate plastic channel member having a generally U-shaped profile defined by a semi-cylindrical, curved bottom portion 2 and a pair of parallel side portions 3. The free ends of the side portions are turned inwardly towards one another to form flanges 4.
In Figure 3, the shroud is shown in position on a known connector 5. The connector comprises an elongate metal body 6 with a cylindrical bore 7 extending axially therethrough.
The body has a generally U-shaped outer profile with a generally flat top 8, A plurality of threaded bores 9 extend radially into the bore 7 from the top 8 and house grub screws 10 which are radially adjustable for clamping the ends of electrical wires (not shown) in the body 6. In place of grub screws, the connector may employ shear bolts or other similar threaded retaining elements. The top of the body includes shoulders 12 which connect to the sides of the body and the flanges 4 of the shroud I lie over these shoulders and terminate just outwardly of the threaded bores 9 so that they do not interfere with the grub screws 10, shear bolts or other retaining elements.
The shroud, which may be extruded, is formed of flexible material such that it can be snap fitted onto the connector from below. The length of the shroud is greater than the length of the connector. The profile of the shroud may be adjusted for use with different connectors. * * *
