Abstract
A child booster seat includes a base 2 which has a cushion 1 for comfort. Attached to the front of the base 2 is an extension 3 which is positioned between the front of the vehicles seat and behind the child's legs. The extension 3 may be adjustable to fit various vehicles. Attached to the lower part of the extension 3, adjacent to the child's ankles, is the restraint mechanism 4 which will limit the movement of the child's legs. On the end of the restraint mechanism 4 are the fixtures 5 which are used to secure the child's legs. In alternative arrangements, the leg straps (5 see figure 5) may be fitted directly to the vehicle or the child's feet may be fitted into restraining socks (10 see fig 4).
Description
Child Booster Seat for Vehicles This invention relates to a child booster seat which prevents a child's feet and legs from reaching any vehicle structure in front of the child.
When a child is seated in a car, the child's feet can reach the seat or dashboard in front of the child. This can result in impact injuries during an accident and also cause irritation to the people sitting in the front seats. During an accident reducing the movement of the lower part of the legs also reduces the upward motion in the upper part of the legs, consequently decreasing the possibility of the child's body impacting with the upper legs.
To limit the movement of the child's legs this invention uses an extension to the base of the child booster seat which fits between the vehicles seat and the child's legs. From the lower part of the extension a restraint mechanism is filled which acts to limit the movement of the child's legs.
The restraint mechanism may also be attached directly to the vehicle if a secure fixing point is available. The restraint mechanism is terminated by a fixture which secures the child's legs at the ankle or foot. The length of the restraint mechanism should prevent the child's feet reaching the vehicle structure in front.
The extension to the base of the seat has to be strong enough to avoid any failures during an accident but light enough to allow easy handling during day to day use. The extension may also be adjustable in angle and length to allow a more comfortable seating position for the child and an improved fit to different vehicles.
The restraint mechanism is made of a pair of cords, one for each leg, attached to the lower part of the extension adjacent to the child's ankles. The restraint mechanism should be made of a material which is stiff enough to prevent excessive movement of the child's legs but also elastic enough to allow an increased deceleration period during an accident. The restraint mechanism may also be fixed directly to the car, although this would require vehicle manufactures to build a fixing system into their vehicles.
At the end of each cord of the restraint mechanism it is necessary to hold the child's legs comfortably but securely. A strip of material which can be made into a loop using a fastener would be the preferred solution. Other methods would also work, for example, socks which fit over the child's feet. Almost any fastener could be used, but ideally it should be easy to secure and quick to release in the event of an emergency. Whichever fastener is used it needs to be difficult to release by the child.
The invention will now be described solely by ways of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows the child booster seat restraint invention fitted with loops.
Figure 2 shows the child booster seat restraint invention (side view) which is filled with an adjustable removable extension.
Figure 3 shows the restraint mechanism fitted with loops to secure the child's legs.
Figure 4 shows the restraint mechanism fitted with socks to secure the child's feet.
Figure 5 shows an alternative restraint mechanism which is attached directly to the vehicle.
n figure 1, the child booster seat invention includes a base 2 which has a cushion 1 for comfort.
Attached to the front of the base 2 is an extension 3 which is positioned between the front of the vehicles seat and behind the child's legs. The extension may be adjustable to fit various vehicles.
Attached to the lower part of the extension 3, adjacent to the child's ankles, is the restraint mechanism 4 which will limit the movement of the child's legs. On the end of the restraint mechanism 4 are the loops 5 which are used to secure the child's legs.
When the child booster seat with the restraint system is fitted to the vehicle, the movement of the child's legs will be limited. This will have two main benefits. Firstly, in the event of an accident, the restraint mechanism 4 will reduce the velocity and rotation of the child's legs.
Which should reduce the severity of any impact the child's legs may have with any structure in front of the them. Secondly, preventing the child from kicking the back of the seat in front, consequently reducing the irritation experienced by the people sitting in the front seats and decreasing any distraction experienced by the driver.
In figure 2 the invention is shown with a base 2 fitted with a cushion 1. There is an extension 3 which is adjustable and removable, there is also a hinge 7 to allow further adjustment and easier storage when not in use.
Figure 3 shows a method of attaching the restraint mechanism 4 to the extension 3. Where the restraint mechanism 4 is fitted at one end with a loop 5 through which the child's leg is placed.
The other end of the restraint mechanism 4 is fitted through a hole 8 in the extension 3 and is terminated by a block 9 to prevent the restraint mechanism 4 being pulled through the hole 8 in the extension 3.
Figure 4 shows a method of attaching the restraint mechanism 4 to the extension 3. Where the restraint mechanism 4 is fitted at one end with a sock 10 into which the child's foot is placed.
The other end of the restraint mechanism 4 is fitted through a hole 8 in the extension 3 and is terminated by a block 9 to prevent the restraint mechanism 4 being pulled through by the hole 8 in the restraint 3.
Figure 5 is an alternative system in which the restraint mechanism 4 with loop 5 is fitted directly to the rear seats 11 at position 12.
