Abstract

A portable display sign is disclosed on which a name can be displayed so that people may easily identify travel personnel or transportation means, e.g. for meeting people at airports. The sign comprises a screen 102 for displaying the name an attachment point (202, Fig. 2) and a support means 502 for displaying the sign in a prominent position, The screen can be an LCD or plasma screen or an LED array powered by batteries housed in the base of the sign. Alternatively it may be a wipeable whiteboard on which a message may be written and erased. The support means can be a telescopic stand 502, or it can be a magnetic base (604, Fig. 6) which holds the sign in place via a spring locking mechanism (608, Fig. 6). This latter arrangement means the sign can be easily mounted on the roof of a vehicle. The magnetic base may carry a message and may also be illuminated.

Field of Invention
The invention relates to the field of portable signs, and more particularly to a portable sign on which a traveller's name can be displayed so that when disembarking the traveller may easily identify travel personnel or transportation mean hired to transport them to an onward destInation. In particular, the invention relates to a portable sign that may be hand-held or attached to a vehicle and more pecifica1ly, to such a sign which is illuminated.
Background of the Invention
Currently at airports, cruise Ship terminals and the like, where disembarking travellers are to be met by travel personnel hired to transport a particular traveller-to a destination, in general the travel personnel do not per.sonl1y know their target traveller. Typically, they will hold out a hand-written or printed sign at chest height with the traveller's name written thereon so that the target traveller will see his/her name and identify himself/herself to the travel personnel. However, these signs are difficult to see amongst crowds of people.
Disclosure of Invention
From the foregoing, it may be appreciated that a need has arisen for a means for travel personnel, such as travel agents, chauffeurs and taxi drivers and the like, or for transportation means to be located more easily.
The present invention is a portable display sign on which a name of a traveller or a group of travellers can be displayed so that when disembarking the traveller or the group may easily identify travel personnel or transportation means hired to transport them to an onward destination. The sign comprises (a) a screen for displaying the name; (b) an attachiient point; arid Cc) a support means for displaying the sign in a prominent position so that the traveller or group may easily see it.
The screen can be a liquid crystal display screen, a light-emitting diode array or a plasma screen display powered by batteries housed in the base of the sign, or it can be a wipeable whiteboard on which a message may be written or erased.
The support means can be a telescopic stand which adjust the height of the hand-held sign, or it can be a magnetic base which holds the sign in place via a spring locking mechanism. This latter arrangement means the sign can be easily mounted on the roof of a vehicle. In either case the sign is clearly visible to the traveller or group.
Brief Description of Drawings
For a more complete explanation of the present invention and the technical advantages thereof, reference is now made to the following description and the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows front and side views of a portable display sign of the present invention having a screen; Figure 2 shows a bottom view of the display sign of the present invention; Figure 3 shows an embodiment of the power panel of the present invention; Figure 4 shows one embodiment of the control panel of the present invention; Figure 5 shows a telescopic stand attached to the display sign of the present invention; and Figures 6 and 7 shows a display sign slotted into a magnetic stand allowing deployment on the roof of a vehicle.
Best Mode for Carrying Out the Invention
Embodiments of the present invention and their technical advantages may be better understood by referring to Figure 1, which shows front and side views of display sign 102 of the present invention having a screen 104.
The screen is any suitable device for displaying information, for example, liquid crystal display, light-emitting diode arrays and plasma screen displays fall within the scope of the invention. Electrical power for the display is typically provided by disposable or rechargeable batteries housed in battery compartment 106 running along the bottom of the screen, accessible via battery access 108.
Referring now to Figure 2, which shows a bottom view of the display sign, an attachment point 202 provides easy attachment of either a screw in telescopic stand or a magnetic base mount. A power panel 202 controls options relating to powering the device and a control panel 206 controls options relating to the display.
Referring now to Figure 3, which shows one embodiment of the power panel of the present invention, a power switch 302 controls whether the device is switched on or off; typically this is a push button switch. A socket 304 allows power to be supplied to the device from an external source, such as a vehicle's electrical system, either to power the device or allow batteries to be recharged.
Referring now to Figure 4, which shows one embodiment of the control panel of the present invention, a text button 402 selects the text edit mode, allowing the user to enter or edit text. Adjust keys 404 allow the user to scroll through the text and edit characters, selected characters typically being highlighted. Colour button 406 allows the user to select between colour schemes.
In a simpler and cheaper embodiment the display sign may be a wipeable whiteboard design not having the power panel or the control panel, or the need for a battery compartment.
The sign device of the present invention can be utilised in a number of different ways.
One way of using the display sign may be understood by referring to Figure 5, which shows telescopic stand 502 attached to display sign 102. The standing height of the sign can be adjusted by loosening and extending the telescopic stand by adjusting locks 504. When a taxi-driver or chauffeur is waiting for a traveller and using the sign device in this way, the screen is clearly visible above head height.
Another way of using the display sign may be understood by referring to Figures 6 and 7, which show a channel 602 in display sign 102 which slots into magnetic stand 604 and is held in place by spring locking mechanism 608.
The magnetic base allows the sign to be easily mounted onto the roof of a vehicle, and may be left permanently in place ready for the sign to be slotted into position. Pressing the spring locking mechanism releases the pin for removal of the sign. When positioned on a vehicle roof, it is clearly visible, and the traveller or group is able easily to see which vehicle is for them.
In a further embodiment, the magnetic base carries company details, advertising slogans, etc and is a permanent feature for minicab and taxi firms. The magnetic base advertises the company in a more cost effective way than applying company details onto the vehicle's bodywork, and may be illuminated to further increase its visibility. The highly visible sign allows the vehicle to be recognised from a distance, unlike most cab firms that can only be identified side on.

Claims (16)

  1. Claims 1. A portable display sign (102) on which a name of a traveller or a group of travellers can be displayed so that when disembarking said traveller or said group may easily identify travel personnel or transportation means hired to transport said traveller or group to an onward destination, said portable display sign comprising: (a) a screen (104) for displaying said name; (b) an attachment point; and Cc) a support means for displaying said sign in a prominent position so that said traveller or group may easily see it.
  2. 2. The portable display sign of claim 1 in which said screen is selected from the group consisting of: liquid crystal display, light-emitting diode array and plasma screen display.
  3. 3. The portable display sign of claim 2 additionally comprising a battery compartment (106) able to house batteries for providing electrical power to said screen.
  4. 4. The portable display sign of claim 3 in which said batteries are rechargeable.
  5. 5. The portable display sign of any preceding claim additionally comprising a power panel (202)
  6. 6. The portable display sign of claim 5 in which said power panel comprises a power switch (302) allowing the screen to be switched on or off.
  7. 7. The portable display sign of claims 5 or 6 in which said power panel comprises a socket (304) allowing power to be supplied to the device from an external source, such as a vehicle's electrical system, either to power the sign or allow batteries to be recharged.
  8. 8. The portable display sign of any preceding claim additionally comprising a control panel (206) controlling options relating to the display.
  9. 9. The portable display sign of claim B in which said control panel comprises: (a) a text button (402) able to select a text edit mode, allowing a user to enter or edit text; (b) adjust keys (404) allowing said user to scroll through text and edit characters, selected characters being highlighted; and Cc) colour button (406) allowing said user to select between colour schemes.
  10. 10. The portable display sign of claim 1 in which said screen is a wipeable whiteboard on which a message may be written or erased.
  11. 11. The portable display sign of any preceding claim in which said support means comprises a telescopic stand (502) or a magnetic base mount (604)
  12. 12. The portable display sign of claim 11 in which a height of said sign can be adjusted by loosening and extending the telescopic stand by adjusting locks (504)
  13. 13. The portable display sign of claim 11 additionally comprising a channel (602) in said display sign which slots into said magnetic base and is held in place by a spring locking mechanism (608), whereby said sign may be easily mounted on the roof of a vehicle whereby said sign is clearly visible, and the traveller or group is able to easily see which vehicle is for them.
  14. 14. The portable display sign of claim 11 in which said magnetic base carries a message.
  15. 15. The portable display sign of claim 14 in which said message comprises company details or advertising slogans.
  16. 16. The portable display sign of claims 14 or 15 in which said magnetic base is illuminated to further increase its visibility.
