Abstract

A U-clip 20 for connecting divan bases, comprises a body 25 including a first end portion 28 and a second end portion 30. A rib 35 is provided along the body 25 from the first end portion 28 to the second end portion 30.

Description

The present invention relates to U-clips and in particular to U-clips for connecting divan bed bases.
A divan bed is made up of a mattress and a base. The base is formed of a covered frame which may or may not be sprung. For larger beds, such as double beds, the base is commonly formed in two separate parts, which aids with transportation of the bed. The two parts of the base need to be connected together to prevent the base separating during use.
A number of different attachment means are used to keep the two halves of a divan base together. One common method ofjoining the halves together is the use of side joining bars which are connected to the bases by for example bolts in the frame of the each half of the base.
Another method of joining the two halves of the base together are metal U-clips formed from bending a flat band of steel. The U-clips hold the edges of the frames of the base halves together underneath the base. The mctal U-clips currently used have a number of disadvantages. They are usually expensive to manufacture and commonly have sharp edges which can rip the material underneath the divan base. Humid bedroom environments, coupled with various types of flame retardant treatments encourage rusting and discolouration of metal U-clips. These flame-retardant materials encourage the rusting of the existing divan clips, which is highly unsatisfactory.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a U-clip for connecting divan bases, said U-clip comprising: a body including a first end portion and a second end portion; and a rib, wherein the rib is provided along the body from the first end portion to the second end portion.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a base for a divan bed comprising a first base portion, a second base portion and at least one U-clip according to the first aspect of the present invention.
According to a third aspect of the present invention, there is provided a kit comprising at least two divan base portions and at least one U-clip according to the first aspect of the present invention.
According to a fourth aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of connecting a first divan base portion to a second divan base portion comprising the step of using a U-clip according to the first aspect of the present invention.
Preferably, the body of the U-clip is formed of a non-metallic material. It is preferred that the body of the U-clip is formed from a plastics material, and in particular a resilient plastics material. Suitable plastics materials are known to the skilled person. Exemplary plastics materials include polyethers, polyolefins, polyurethanes, acrylics, polyvinyl halides and mixtures thereof It is further preferred that the plastics material is a homopolymer or copolymer of C2-Cg olefins. In an alternative preferred embodiment, the plastics material is polyacetal (polyoxymethylene).
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the rib is provided on the exterior of the body of the U-clip. The rib can either be positioned wholly on the inner face of the U-clip, wholly on the outer face of the U-clip or the rib can be positioned such that at least a portion of the rib in on the inner face and a portion is on the outer face. It is particularly preferred that there is at least a portion of the rib is on the inner face extending along at least a portion of the base of the body. This embodiment provides a particularly resilient structure.
In this embodiment, it is preferred that the rib is formed from the same material as the body of the U-clip. It is particularly preferred that the body and the rib of the U-clip are formed as a single part, and in particular in a single moulding or extrusion step.
In an alternative preferred embodiment, the rib is an internal rib which is positioned in the body of the U-clip. It is further preferred that the rib is entirely enclosed within the body of the U-clip. In this embodiment, the rib is preferably formed from a metal, such as steel, although other suitable materials could be used. It is preferred that the body of the U-clip is formed from the plastics material as described above. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the body of the U-clip is moulded around the metal rib.
In a frirther preferred embodiment, the end portions of the body of the U-clip are provided with gripping means on the inner face for gripping the divan base portions. The gripping means can take the form of ridges in the surface of the end portion. The ridges are typically oriented in a direction perpendicular to the length of the U-clip, although the ridges could be at other suitable orientations. Where the U-clip is formed from plastics material by moulding or extruding, the gripping means are integrally formed with the body of the U-clip.
The U-clips of the present invention are advantageously cheap to manufacture and are made from cheaper materials than the standard metal clips. In addition, the clips are of reduced weight compared to known clips, which is advantageous for bulk shipping of the clips.
Any one of the preferred embodiments of the present invention can be combined with any one of the other preferred embodiments.
The invention will now be frirther described with reference to the drawings in which: Figure 1 shows the U-clip of a first embodiment of the present invention; Figure 2 shows the U-clip of a second embodiment of the present invention; Figure 3 shows the U-clip of the second embodiment of the present invention from an alternate angle; and Figure 4 shows the U-clip in position on the base of a divan bed.
Figure 1 shows a U-clip 1. The U-clip 1 has a body 5 having a first end portion 8 and a second end portion 10. A rib 15 runs around the outer face of the body. The rib and the body are moulded together from polyoxymethylene.
Figures 2 and 3 show an alternative U-clip 20 according to the present invention. The U-clip 20 has a body 25 having a first end portion 28 and a second end portion 30. As can be seen in Figure 1, there is a rib 35 running around the outer face of the body 25. In Figure 3, it can be seen that a portion 38 of the rib 35 is also present in the inner face of the body 25. The U-clip 20 is also moulded in a single moulding step from polyoxymethylene.
Figure 4 shows the U-clip 1 connecting together a first divan base portion 50 and a second divan base portion 55.
Although the invention has been described with reference to the exemplified preferred embodiments, it will be appreciated that various modifications are possible within the scope of the invention.

Claims (14)

  1. Claims 1. A U-clip for connecting divan bases, said U-clip comprising: a body including a first end portion and a second end portion; and a rib, wherein the rib is provided along the body from the first end portion to the second end portion.
  2. 2. A U-clip as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the rib is provided on the exterior of the body of the U-clip.
  3. 3. A U-clip as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the body of the U-clip is non-metallic.
  4. 4. A U-clip as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein the body of the U-clip consists of a resilient plastics material.
  5. 5. A U-clip as claimed in any of the previous claims wherein the rib consists essentially of the same material as the body.
  6. 6. A U-clip as claimed in Claim 5, wherein the U-clip and rib are integrally moulded from a resilient plastics material
  7. 7. A U-clip as claimed in any one of claims 2 to 6, wherein the body has an inner surface and an outer surface, and wherein at least a portion of the rib is provided on the inner surface and at least a portion of the rib is provided on the outer surface.
  8. 8. A U-clip as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the rib is internally positioned in the body of the U-clip.
  9. 9. A U-clip as claimed in Claim 8, wherein the rib is metallic.
  10. 10. A U-clip as claimed in Claim 8 or Claim 9, wherein the entirely enclosed in the body of the U-clip.
  11. 11. A base for a divan bed comprising a first base portion, a second base portion and at least one U-clip according to any one of claims ito 10 for connecting the base portions together.
  12. i2. A kit comprising at least two divan base portions and at least one U-clip defined in any of Claims ito 10.
  13. 13. A method of connecting a first divan base portion to a second divan base portion comprising the step of using a U-clip according to any one of Claims 1 to 10.
  14. 14. A U-clip substantially as hereinbefore described and as illustrated by Figure 1 or byFigures2and3.
