Abstract

A door 50 comprises a door core 12 which has first and second opposed faces 14, 16 that are interposed by a pair of side edges 18 and a pair of opposed end edges 20, 22 and a first covering layer 24 which lies over each of the first face 14 and the pair of side edges 18 and at least a first end edge 20, and a second covering layer 26 which lies over at least the second face 16. The first and second covering layers 24, 26 cooperate with one another to encase at least the first end edge 20. The first and second covering layers may over the first end edge to the same extent. The first and second layers may abut each other and the abutting edges may then be welded together. Also claimed is a situation where the two covering layers do not meet on the first end edge and a strip member is used. This may be an intumescent, fire resistant, smoke or acoustic sealing member.

Description

A DOOR
fhiS vengon reiates tce door S Uoors are enaHe to daniaqe and so often they are provided with ptection n order re$uoe the neec: for mamte.nance or reciaoetiient TycaUy the protection comprises a first covering iayer which extends across a iront tacs of a door core and the svie edqes o the door core Le the irruse tcrd adage of the to door, and a second covenng layer wh.n exands across the rear face and aide ees of the door core An end ends of the door core is either the inwse top or cotiom edgo 01 the door, is protected bvthwd coverin aer which extends across the raspec.twe end edge However, such an errs nqernent creates a interface between the first arid second covering layers and the thaI covering layer which lies along the external oenmeter of the end edge. This externa penrmster is exposed and so a susceptit>ie to impact damage that causes one or more of the covering iayers to separate from the. door core in ro addon. the said interface o:efines a dirt trac that can harbour cerms and other corIteminanjs.
There s, therelore a need for an mproved door which inc.iudes an increased degree of protecton while reducing the potentcsi br damage and cordarnirlation assocated with iS conventonai doors.
Accordng.fo.nrtt aspect of the invention there is provided a door cornprisn a door core having first and second opposed faces interoosed v a oair 01 onposed side edges and a pair of opposed end edges a tirs covering Layet lying over each at the first lace and the pair of ama edges anti at least a last end edpe; and a second covering iaer lying over at least the second face.
the fret and second oove!ing layers cooperatirifi uinh one another to encase at east the first end edge.
Having the first covenng layer lie over each of the first face the pair of side edges end at ieast the first end edge reduces the extent to wftch the interface between the first end expO e>tern& pre f th rd:de, th)1C: Sntf OiflO from rr' interface between the brat and second cc srlng leers in the region of the second end edge Covenlently the first and second covedrKt layers lie over the first &:nd sensed end edoes to the sante estent. rSuc.r a catnripurat1on aows the tINt and second covenn 1w are to he Identical, and so h&ps to reduce manufacturIng coniplesity and cost.
In a further preferred ernbothnient of the Invenbon each of the first and secoref coconng avers defines at least one elongate oenpheral edge. The rovision of c'.ne ot more ir elonoate peripheral edges ensures that the first anc second covenn Laers are rwacflly able to cooperate with one another in t wa that avods any gaps therebatween, thereby fecthtatlnc the prov}sion of a fluidligtit seal between the first and second cc raring leers.
Optionay the or each elongate penphera enge of the first covenno layer abuts a corresponding elongate peripheral edge of the second oovenng layer.
Corresponding elongate peripheral edges may e welded to one another I ne foregoing features help to, ensure the fbrmation of a fluiddight seal between the first and second covering layers.
Preferably corresponding elongate peripheral edges of the brat and second cr)venng layers are interposed by a strip rnernbec The moltjslon of a atnp member orowdes the door with additional characterisbcs while enca&ng the first and second end edges to a dewred extent.
Thens now follows a brief desoriotion ci preferred errbodirnents 01 the mvenuoli by way of nondimiting examples, with reference being made to, the accompanying drawnps m yvsen Hgure I shows a perspective sew of a d,00r according to a first embodmoent of t'% è\,"\,''', Figure 2 5f':55is er' eCtloded, perspecttve wew of the ctoor shown m Hgure 1; Figure 3 shows t perspecLvf? view of a door accorthng to a seconc embodiment of the rwenton; and 55, Figure 4 shows an: exploded, perspective view of the door shown in Figure 3.
