Abstract

A flange 1 for a cable reel or a hose reel has a boss or ridge 2 around its circumference and a tyre 3 whose inner circumference has projections 4 that fit around the boss or ridge 2 of the flange 1. The flange 1 may have a groove 5 around its circumference on each side of the flange 1 forming the boss or ridge 2. The tyre 3 may be made from low friction plastic or from metal with metal or polymer bearings or bushes.

Description

I
DESCRIPTION
A Loose lyre and Flange for Reels This invention relates to a loose tyre and flange for reels.
When hose or cable is wound onto a reel and the reel is pulled or pushed along the ground by its axle the diameter of the drum and the hose or cable wound around the drum remains constant. If the reel is pulled or pushed along the ground by its axle in order to lay out the cable or hose from a fixed point, the diameter of the drum and the hose or cable is constantly reducing. The result is the flanges of the reel skid along the ground.
The present invention provides a loose tyre that encircles the flange fitted to each side of the drum of a reel. The flange has a boss or ridge around its circumference and the inner circumference of each of the tyre walls has projections that fit around the boss or ridge of the flange thus enabling the tyre to rotate at a different speed to the drum and hose or cable. Alternatively the flange has a groove around its circumference on each side of the flange. The inner circumference of each of the tyre walls has projections that fit into the groves of the flange thus enabling the tyre to rotate at a different speed to the drum and hose or cable.
The invention will now be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Fig. 1 is a side view of the flange of a reel; Fig. 2 is a section through the tyre and flange where the flange has a groove around its circumference; and Fig. 3 is a section through the tyre and flange where the flange has a boss or ridge around its circumference.
Referring first to Fig. I the practical embodiment of the loose tyre and flange of the invention comprises a flange I having a boss or ridge 2 and a groove 5.
Figure 2 is a section through the tyre and flange comprising a flange 1, a boss or ridge 2, a tyre 3, a projection of the tyre 4 that encircles the boss or ridge and a groove 5.
Figure 3 is a section through the tyre and flange comprising a flange I, a boss or ridge 2, a tyre 3 and a projection of the tyre 4 that encircles the boss or ridge.
For lightweight reels the loose tyre and flange can be made of plastic with low frictional resistance. For larger, heavier reels the loose tyre and flange can be made of metal with metal or polymer bearings or bushes.
Various modifications to the detailed design of the loose tyre and flange, compared to the illustrated embodiment, are possible within the scope of the invention.

Claims (3)

  1. CLAIMSA Loose lyre and Flange for Reels A loose tyre that encircles the flange fitted to each side of the drum of a reel. The flange has a boss or ridge around its circumference and the inner circumference of each of the tyre walls has projections that fit around the boss or ridge of the flange thus enabling the tyre to rotate at a different speed to the drum and hose or cable.
  2. 2. A loose tyre and flange as claimed in claim 1 where the flange has a groove around its circumferenceon each side of the flange. The inner circumference of each of the tyre walls has projections that fit into the groves of the flange thus enabling the tyre to rotate at a different speed to the drum and hose or cable.
  3. 3. A loose tyre and flange substantially as herein before described with reference to and as illustrated by the accompanying drawing.
