Description

A Module for a Display Unit
Field
This invention relates to a module for use in a product display unit and in particular to a module for incorporation into a point of sale display unit.
Backcround of the Invention Display units are frequently used in retail Outlets behind the pay counter, and in order to maximise the display area the shelves are as closely stacked one on another as is possible. In the document GB-A-2450912, the present applicant describes a display shelf that is convenient to use even in a densely packed array of shelves. Modern shelving, especially for display and sale of high value goods such as cigarettes, when viewed from the front, may appear as a generally unbroken array of goods from which separate sales lines are difficult to distiiigUish.
Furthermore, display units are often used in shops or other commercial premises to display and dispense particular lines of goods which may be produced by single or multiple manufacturers. In such units, it may be desirable to make particular goods stand out in order to promote sales.
Statements of Invention
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a display unit module, which in use may form part of a general display unit, the module comprising an open fronted housing having back lighting at the rear of the housing, a.removable display stand which at least in part is translucent is arranged in front of the lighting to mask the lighting, and a removable decorative front frame surrounding the open front of the housing.
The front frames and/or the display stand may be interchangeable with other different frames and other different display stands to achieve different aesthetic effects.' Preferably, the display stands are formed at least in part from moulded plastics materials having opaque and translucent areas as are desired to achieve particular lighting effects. The stand may includea rear partitionthat substantially fills the cross-section of the housing.
In use the housing is preferably mounted to a pair of vertical wall mountings having spaced apart apertures therein and to this end the back surface of th housing is provided with a vertical rear edges having prongs thereon which engage the apertures in the wall mountings to hold the module in a chosen position in a display unit.
The housing may also support external lighting units which in use illuminate the surrounding display unit.
Preferably, the housing is substantially in the form of an open fronted hollow' cube.
Description of the DrawinQs
The invention will be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: * Fig. 1 is an isometric view of a display unit module according to the present invention, Fig. 2 is a rear view of the housing of the display unit Fig. 3 is exploded view of a display unit module according to the present invention, * Fig 4. shows an alternative front frame, and Figs. 5 & 6 show alternative display stands for use within the housing.
Detailed Description of the Invention
With reference to Figs I to 3, there is shown a display unit module 10 which in use may form part of a display unit assembly of the type described in the applicant's co-pending application 0912794.5 in which display shelves are mounted to pairs of vertical wall mountings as is described in document GB-A- 2450912. The module 10 comprises a open fronted carcass or housing 12 Jvhich is substantially in the form of a hollow cube having a rear wall 13 with verticl * rear edges having prongs 11 thereon which engage apertures in wall mountings to hold the module in a chosen position in a display unit. The housing 12 may be formed from sheet metal or a suitable plastics material.
Alighting strip 14 is mounted on the rear wall 13 internally of the housing 12. The lighting strip may comprise any suitable form of lighting such as LEDs, mercury vapour strip lights, or standard incandescent lights. A removable display stnd 15 is positioned within the housing in front of the light strip 14, in use masking the strip 14. The open front of the housing is surrounded by a remOvable decorative frame 16.
The display stand 16 is preferably moulded from a plastics material(s) and has translucent portions so that a desired lighting effects may be created for highlighting goods 17 displayed on the stand 15. Portions of the display stand may also be opaque or transparent to achieve other types of lighting effect. The stand 15 is provided with a rear wall or partition 18 which in use substantially fills the substantially square cross-section of the housing.
The front frame 16 is also moulded from a suitable plastics material and may be removably attached to the open front of the housing by suitable fasteners 19 (e.g. screws) at the top side of the frame. The fasteners 19 are easily removable allowing the frame 16 to'be removed and re-attached as is desired and particularly in order to remove and/or change the stand 15.
With reference to Fig 4, there is shown a second frame 116, aesthetically different to the frame 16, which may be interchanged with the frame 16 to provide different aesthetic effects. Similarly in Figs 5and6 there are shown alternative display stands 118 and 218 respectively which display the goods in different configurations with different lighting effects.
The module 10 when forming part of a shelving or other type of display assembly may have lights mounted on the external surfaces of the housing 12 in order to illuminate other goods on external of the housing.
