Abstract

An anvil for use in heat sealing and cutting of plastic films comprises a diamond-shaped centre insert, which cuts a thermal plastic film when a heated flat bar at the correct temperature is applied. Preferably, a slot is provided in which the diamond-shaped centre is located. The cutting edge can be renewed by rotating the diamond-shaped centre by 90, until a new edge is revealed. The anvil may include two side mouldings of a heat resistant rubber, and which can be colour coded to denote their hardness. The use of high temperature rubber moulding materials may allow use up to 300°C. The complete assembly may create a hermetic seal having a width of 1 to 2mm.

R.C.R. (Rapid Change Rotational) Anvil
Introduction
There are several methods for heat sealing and cutting plastic films and applications can vary in the making and sealing of bags, pouches and sacks.
The actual method used to create the heat is from the opposing member but is not critical to the function of this design, however close control of these 3 criteria; heat, pressure and time enable quality sealing to be optimised The three piece R.C.R. design controls the pressure distribution between the hard high temperature resistant plastic and the softer rubber surface to create fine, strong hermetic seals, The R.C.R. Anvil cuts without using a cutting knife, alleviating replacement downtime, and additional benefits of reducing injuries from a health and safety point of view.
The reduction in seal width produced allows major cost reduction in film usage and supports the drive to reduce packaging waste.
Description
The R.C.R anvil can be seen in our attached sketches.
The anvil assembly requires a slot with controlled depth to locate its position It is made up of three parts, two parts are of the same geometry and are fitted as a mirror image (see side moulding 1 & 2) with a third central diamond form through the centre (see "Diamond form") The two side mouldings are manufactured in a heat resistant rubber and colour coded to denote the hardness.
The contact sealing surface at the top of the moulding is manufactured with a special diamond form to concentrate the sealing force at the apex and to reduce sticking of the hot films either side of the cut.
The 4-sided heat resistant diamond form is located in the rubber side housings, ensuring a controlled relationship between the cutting edge and sealing rubbers.
The R.C.R. anvil is assembled into a retaining slot without the need for any special tools -it is fitted centrally with the cutting edge protruding over the side sealing mouldings. This area now becomes the cutting edge.
This cutting edge initially takes the full force available from the closing jaws until it becomes level with the cross-hatched sealing face.
At this point the force is then spread over the total contact area.
The ratio of cutting force to sealing force can be controlled by the hardness of the rubber mouldings and this allows adjustments for different film types and thicknesses.
A key feature of this central diamond cutting form allows the cutting edge to be renewed by rotating the diamond 90 degrees until a new edge is revealed. This can be carried out four times before the central diamond form must be replaced.
