Abstract

The cards contain the necessary hardware (Fig. 1 [1]) for carrying out short distance communication to other similar cards, possibly using the wireless Bluetooth® protocol. In the first instance the cards do not communicate with bank central computers. The cards allow details of intended payments to be stored in an on-card memory (Fig. 1 [1]). The cards may contain a display 2 and a holographic keyboard 3 for entering the amount of money to be transferred, as well as account numbers and PINs. When the payer's card is next presented at an ATM or cash point machine, the transfer of funds is activated at the bank central computer(s). Power could be provided by a solar cell 1. Additional security may be provided by fingerprint or retinal scanning devices.

DESCRIPTION
Transaction card This invention relates to a transaction card that would negate the need for cheques and cash on a person to person basis.
Quite often we need to pay someone e.g. tradesmen, friends etc, and a cheque or cash are the only option. However, they are not always a convenient method of payment; were people living in remote areas and cash machines are located some distance away, and the fact that the chequebook system appears to be fazing out, this invention provides an alternative.
The card comes in the fonn of a debit/credit card associated with the users bank'building society account, when the card is within a short distance (defined by Bluetooth technology) of another card of its type, it will establish a link via the Bluetooth connection chip incorporated within the card. The card is powered by an integrated solar panel. Each card will identify the connecting card by the user's account number which will appear in the holographic display panel, each user in turn, will authorise the link by keying in their account pin number via the holographic keypad (security method). The user of the card to be debited will key in the amount of payment and touch the enter button to confirm the amount. This amount will then be visible in the display panel of the connecting card and the user acknowledges receipt of payment by pressing enter on the card to be credited.
Alternative security methods may be used, such as fmgerprintlretinal scanning or facial recognition devices. In addition, alternative methods of power may be used e.g. fuel cell.
Once the transaction has taken place the information including the details of the connecting card (user name, sort code, account number and transaction amount) are stored on the memory chip and the information is updated to the user's account when next synchromsed at an ATM or in branch at Bank/Building Society. The responsibility for overspending therefore lies with the user. The cards would not hold any additional personal details! The invention will now be described by example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1. Shows the front face view of the transaction card, Figure2. Shows the rear view of the transaction card, Figure3. Shows two transaction cards of this type establishing a connection, In figure 1, a memory chip with incorporated Bluetooth connection device I is located on the front side of the transaction card accompanied by the standard card number provided by the users banklbuilding society 2.
Figure 2 shows the rear side view of the transaction card, the solar panel which provides power to the card is located at the top edge of the card 1, with the holographic display panel located directly beneath 2, which allows visual recognition of the connecting card user's account details and transaction amounts. 3 identifies the holographic keypad which enables the user to provide a security pin number and transaction amounts to the card. Alternative security methods could be incorporated in the form of fingerprintlretinal scan or facial recognition technology. The keypad provides options for clearing errors incorrectly keyed in4 and the option to confirm correct keyed in information 5.
In figure 3 two transaction cards as described above are located within a given distance of each other, which is defmed by the Bluetooth technology, and a connection is established between the two Bluetooth connection devices land 2.
