Description
Wireless Communication Devices This invention relates to pairs of handheld wireless communication devices, single wireless communication devices in such a pair, and a method of enabling interpersonal communication between a pair of users.
Telecommunication devices and systems have developed dramatically over the last twenty years, and in general the trend of this development has been towards increasingly complex and sophisticated methods of communication. The present inventor, however, has identified a need for a method of interpersonal communication which is easier for a user to carry out.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a pair of handheld wireless communication devices for interpersonal communication between a pair of users, each device in the pair including: a user operable switch; transmission means for wirelessly transmitting a signal, the transmission means being in operable connection with the switch so that the operation of the switch by a user causes the transmission means to transmit a signal having a unique identification portion corresponding to the other device in the pair, the unique identification portion enabling the signal to be directed to and recognised by the other device in the pair; receiver means for receiving a signal transmitted from the other device in the pair; and user alert means in operable connection with the receiver means for activating one or more pre-determined alert conditions on receipt by the receiving means of a signal from the other device in the pair, wherein the interpersonal communication associated with the operation of the switch of one device in the pair by a user is limited to the activation of the one or more pre-determined alert conditions.
In this way, people who are geographically separated can communicate with one another in a reassuring manner. Reassurance is provided because the operation of the switch is dedicated to the transmission of the signal to the other device in the pair. Owing to the nature of the invention, the transmitted signal can be spatially short, which can provide cost advantages.
For the avoidance of doubt, the signal received by the receiver means of one device in the pair may not be the signal that was actually transmitted by the other device in the pair. Instead, the signal may be relayed by a suitable communications system.
In preferred embodiments, the devices form a dedicated pair wherein the transmission means of each device in the pair is configured to only transmit a signal having the unique identification portion corresponding to the other device in the pair.
Dedicated pairs of handheld wireless communication devices may consist essentially of: a user operable switch; transmission means for wirelessly transmitting a signal, the transmission means being in operable connection with the switch so that the operation of the switch by a user causes the transmission means to transmit a signal having a unique identification portion corresponding to the other device in the pair, the unique identification portion enabling the signal to be directed to and recognised by the other device in the pair; receiver means for receiving a signal transmitted from the other device in the pair; and user alert means in operable connection with the receiver means for activating one or more pre-determined alert conditions on receipt of the receiving means of a signal from the other device in the pair, wherein the interpersonal communication associated with the operation of the switch of a device in the pair by a user is limited to the activation of the one or more pre-determined alert conditions.
In other embodiments, the invention may be incorporated in non-dedicated communication devices such as mobile telephones (otherwise known as cell phones), landline telephones and other devices. The invention can be incorporated into non-dedicated devices of this type by providing a dedicated switch on pairs of devices, wherein the operation of the switch causes the transmission means to transmit a signal having a unique identification portion corresponding to the other device in the pair.
The transmission means may transmit an RF signal. Other forms of wireless communication, such as by the transmission of an electromagnetic signal of other frequencies, an electrical signal, or an optical signal, might be util ised.
The transmission means may be a transmitter (when an RF signal is transmitted).
The transmission means and receiver means may be separate elements.
However, it is preferred that a transceiver is provided which functions as the transmission means and the receiver means.
Preferably, the transmission means transmits a signal to a mobile telephone communication system, and the unique identification portion is configured to allow the mobile telephone communication system to relay the signal to the other device in the pair. The unique identification portion may include a telephone number corresponding to the other device in the pair.
The transmission means may transmit a signal of less than about 10 ms length in response to the operation of the switch by a user.
The devices in the pair may include a memory device for storing information, in which stored information includes the unique identification portion. In embodiments in which the transmission means transmits a signal to a mobile telephone communication system, the memory device may include a SIM card. Alternatively, the memory device may be in the form of any suitable chip or microprocessor, such as a ROM, PROM, EPROM, or EEPROM memory.
The one or more alert conditions may be selected from: a vibration which emanates from the device, an audible alert, visual alert, or a combination thereof. It is preferred that a vibration is utilised as an alert condition, because this alert condition provides a very reassuring effect. The vibration may be combined with an audible alert, such as a "buzzing" noise. Other forms of audible alert, such as music, a verbal message, or other audible information may be utilised. A visual alert may be provided through the use of suitable illuminations, or with a suitable display screen. A visual alert may take the form of a flashing light, a display of flashing lights, or the display of an image, which may be a still image or a moving image. Technology for storing and displaying images is well known to persons skilled in the field of mobile communications devices.
The signal transmitted by the transmission means of a device in the pair may include an identifying portion which indicates that the signal has been sent from that device.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a handheld wireless communication device for use as one of a pair of handheld wireless communication devices for interpersonal communication between a pair of users, the device including: a user operable switch; transmission means for wirelessly transmitting a signal, the transmission means being in operable connection with the switch so that operation of the switch by a user causes the transmission means to transmit a signal having a unique identification portion corresponding to the other device in the pair, the unique identification portion enabling the signal to be directed to and recognised by the other device in the pair; receiver means for receiving a signal transmitted from the other device in the pair; and user alert means in operable connection with the receiver means for activating one or more pre-determined alert conditions on receipt by the receiving means of a signal from the other device in the pair, wherein the interpersonal communication associated with the operation of the switch of a device in the pair by a user is limited to activation of the one or more pre-determined alert conditions.
According to a third aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of enabling interpersonal communication between a pair of users including the steps of: providing a first user in the pair with a first handheld wireless communication device, and providing a second user in the pair with a second handheld wireless communication device; operating a switch on the first device so as to cause the device to transmit a signal having a unique identification portion corresponding to the second device; directing the signal to the second device, in which the unique identification portion enables the signal to be directed to and recognised by the second device; receiving the signal at the second device, in which, on receipt of said signal, the second device activates one or more pre-determined alert conditions, wherein the interpersonal communication associated with the operation of the switch of the first device is limited to the activation of the one or more pre-determined alert conditions.
Whilst the invention has been described above, it extends to any inventive combination of the features set out above, or in the following
description, drawings or claims.
Embodiments of devices and methods in accordance with the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:-Figure 1 shows (a) a plan view and (b) a side view of the device of the invention; Figure 2 shows the internal arrangement of the device of Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a schematic diagram showing the operation of a dedicated pair of devices of the invention.
Figure 1 shows a device, depicted generally at 10, of the invention. The device 10 comprises a body portion 12 which houses the device functionality.
Located externally on the device 10 are a main switch 14, an on-off switch 16, LED lights 18, 20, a mesh 22 which enables the device 10 to output an audible signal, a recharging socket 24, and an eyelet 26 enabling the device to be connected to a chain such as a neck chain, bracelet, key ring, or the like. The LED lights can be used to indicate that the device is on, and when the battery level is low. The device 10 shown in Figure 1 is one of a dedicated pair of devices. Operation of the main switch 14 of the device 10 by application of a pressure thereto causes activation of the other device in the pair in a manner described in more detail below. Similarly, operation of the main switch of the other device in the pair causes activation of the device 10.
Figure 2 shows the internal arrangement of the device 10. A transceiver 28 is provided which is in connection with a memory device 30, which conveniently can be in a form well known in the mobile telecommunications field, such as a SIM card. A pressure switch 32 is provided which is aligned with the main switch 14 so that depression of the main switch 14 by a user activates the pressure switch 32. The device 10 further comprises a battery 34, which is preferably a rechargeable battery that can be recharged via the socket 24.
Further components of the device 10 comprise a buzzer/vibrator device 36, which is positioned adjacent the mesh 22, and electrical connections 38 to the LED lights 18, 20.
Operation of the main switch 14/pressure switch 32 by a user causes the transceiver 28 to transmit a signal having an identification code associated with the other device in the dedicated pair and which is stored in the memory 30.
Technology which is well known in the mobile telecommunications field can be used for this purpose. However, in contrast to a more usual mobile phone functionality, the device 10 is configured so as to be dedicated so as to the other device in the pair, i.e., the device 10 can only transmit to the other device in the pair.
Figure 3 shows how signals are sent between devices 40, 42 in a dedicated pair. The devices 40, 42 shown schematically in Figure 3 correspond to devices of the type shown in Figures 1 and 2. Depression of a main switch of the device 40 causes a signal to be transmitted by the transceiver of the device 40, the signal including the identification number of the other device 42. The signal is transmitted over a mobile telecommunications network in a manner which is understood by the skilled reader, and is directed to the other device 42 in the pair. The signal is received by the transceiver of the device 42, and in response, the device 42 activates the buzzer/vibrator device. This provides a pleasing alert to the user of the other device 42 of the pair. Because the devices 40, 42 operate as a dedicated pair, the user of the device 42 understands the activation of the device as representing a personalised communication from the user of the first device 40. Each device communicates only with the other corresponding, dedicated device in the pair. Relatively complicated operations such as dialling are not required; instead a simple pressing action on the switch is sufficient to transmit the signal to the other device in the pair. The signal that is transmitted is merely required to be suitable to ensure that transmission to the other device in the pair is made and to enable the other device in the pair to recognise receipt of the transmission. The receipt of the transmission triggers the pre-determined alert condition or conditions, such as the buzzer or vibrator function. The interpersonal communication provided by the devices in the pair is limited to the pre-determined alert conditions, and more complicated arrangements such as verbal telephonic communication, SMS texting, etc are not supported. This simplifies the componentry associated with the invention, and also has the consequence that the signal transmitted by the devices can be short in nature. The signal transmitted by the devices is typically less than 10 ms in length and may be about I ms in length or shorter. This has the advantages that running costs for uses of the device are relatively low, and also that battery use is relatively low.
In the example shown in the Figures, the body 12 is in the form of a casing which may be provided in two or more portions in order to permit access to the interior of the device, or may be provided with a flap or other moveable part to allow access to the device interior as is well known to the skilled reader.
The device shown in the Figures is of a curved and flattened shape, providing a pleasing shape rather similar to a pebble which is aesthetically appealing and pleasing to hold. However, it would be appreciated that a vast range of designs are possible. The main body is typically manufactured from suitable plastics material, although the use of other materials is within the scope of the invention.
It is anticipated that the devices of the invention will appeal to a wide range of persons who wish to communicate in a straightforward manner with another individual, such as pairs of friends, couples, and parents and children. It is anticipated that the convenient operation of the device will also be appealing to persons who find it challenging to acquire familiarity with the often complex operations of modern mobile communication devices.
Numerous variations on the principle discussed above in relation to the Figures are possible. Although it is considered to be very convenient to cause the transmission of the signal through a simple click on the main switch, it is possible to incorporate more complicated operating methodologies, such as a "double click" operation. It is convenient that the invention can be integrated with existing mobile telecommunications systems. However, in principle, other systems might be employed in order to enable one device in the pair to communicate with the other. For example, a direct communication system, in which the signal transmitted by one device in the pair is directly received by the other device in the pair, might be contemplated, especially for applications in which the devices in the pair are in rather close proximity. Other forms of alert conditions might be contemplated in addition to or instead of a buzzer/vibrator function. The devices shown in the Figures are fully dedicated devices wherein the only mode of communication is via the transmission of the dedicated signal which results in the triggering of the alert conditions. However, the invention might be incorporated in non-dedicated pairs of devices, such as mobile phones or land line phones. This may be done by providing pairs of devices which have a dedicated button or other switch, wherein the operation of the dedicated switch causes a signal to be automatically transmitted to the other device in the pair, triggering a desired alert condition or conditions.
