Abstract

A laryngeal mask comprising a tube and a cuff, the tube is split along its length and can be releaseably clicked opened and closed along the split, and the cuff is also split at location adjacent to the tube split The split in the tube is normally airtight at normally applied pressures in clinical practice. Split in the cuff is also similarly airtight when it is inflated. Other medical devices can be inserted into the device. The device can then be split open and removed.

Description

Description
Split Intubating Laryngeal Mask Airway (SILMA) Laryngeal Mask Airway (LMA) is commonly used device by the anaesthetists and other medical and non-medical professionals. It is used in many anaesthetised and unconscious patients.
Split LMA is a modification of LMA. In this it is split along the length of tube and also at cuff.
The split in the tube is normally airtight at normally applied pressures in clinical practice.
Split in the cuff is also similarly airtight when it is inflated. Because of this SILMA can be used as normal LMA.
If needed, SILMA can be used to intubate trachea. After the tube is passed into trachea, then SILMA is split open and taken out. Use of this method avoids the complex procedure and equipment needed in case of conventional Intubating LMA.
Because of these features SILMA can be used by paramedics in field for ventilation by LMA and intubation. For the same reasons it can be easily used in the hospital settings.
Additionally it can be used for fibreoptic intubation by the anaesthetists in difficult intubation especially in fractures neck patients.

Claims (3)

  1. Claims Split Intubating Laryngeal Mask Airway (SILMA) * It is split along the length of the tube.* The cuff is also split in the middle.* Split in the tube can be clicked open and closed to make it airtight whenever needed.Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows.Split Laryngeal Mask Airway (SILMA) Claims 1. A laryngeal mask airway (LMA) comprising of a main tube which is split longitudinally along its whole length and a distal cuff which is split at one end so that the splits in the tube and the cuff are continuous with each other.
  2. 2. A laryngeal mask airway (LMA) according to claim 1, in which the split in the tube can be clicked closed to make it airtight and clicked opened when needed.
  3. 3. A laryngeal mask airway (LMA) according to claim, in which the split in the cuff is closed by approximation of split ends of the cuff when the cuff is inflated.
