Abstract
A sock for sports 10 comprises a foot portion 12, an ankle portion 14 and a leg portion 16. A closed pocket 18, located within the leg portion, encloses a shin guard 20 that may be made from an open cell foam. An opening (24, figure 2A) with a releasable fastening (26, figure 2A), which is preferably a zip fastener, is positioned longitudinally along at least a part of the leg portion. When closed, the fastening means may be concealed by a flap (28, figure 2). The base layer of the sock, and the pocket, are preferably made from neoprene and nylon. A region of neoprene reinforcement may be provided at the ankle. Cushioning (30, figure 3) is optionally provided in the sole and toe areas.
Description
Title: A Sock for Sports The present invention relates to a sock for sports and particularly but not exclusively to a sock for use when playing ball games, for example, football, rugby, hockey and lacrosse.
Background to the Invention
At present, when playing a ball game, such as football, it is common to wear socks with shin guards held to the legs by the socks. These shin guards can become mislaid after a game when removed and the socks are washed and it is relatively easy for the shin guards to fall out during a game. This is usually due to the socks falling down as a player runs.
In BE 20030123 (PHILIPPENS), there is disclosed a prior art sock arrangement in which a shin guard is made from a plurality of thin strips of plastic held in individual pockets disposed on the shin region of each sock. When the sock is put on by a player, the strips of plastic can be inserted in the pockets, which extended vertically around the shin area. The pockets are open ended. A zip is provided along the length of the sock to facilitate taking the sock on and off.
The prior art sock described has the problem that the shin protection, i.e. plastic strips, have to be removed when the sock is washed and hence the shin protectors can become mislaid. Also, the zip can become snaged on the players other sock or the socks of another player, for example, during a tackle. In the game of rugby, the zip could cause physical injury to a tackling player. The sock does provide some padding but does not offer, for example, ankle support to prevent a player getting injured, for example, by spraining an ankle. Furthermore, the shin guards are relatively small and offer no protection at all to some areas of the shin.
It is an object of the invention to provide a sock which reduces or substantially obviates the above mentioned problems.
Statement of Invention
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a sock for sports comprising a foot portion, an ankle portion and a leg portion, a closed pocket disposed in the leg portion, a unitary shin guard disposed within the closed pocket, an opening provided substantially longitudinally of at least a part of the leg portion and a releasable fastening means for closing the opening.
The sock is advantageous because the shin guard is integral with the sock and does not need to be removed for washing.
The fastening means may be a zip fastening. Other fastening means, such as hook and eye fastener or studs may also be utilised, as desired.
A flap may be provided for concealing the fastening means when fastened. The flap is advantageous because it conceals the zip, thus preventing it from becoming snagged on other socks, in use. It also protects players from potential injury by the zip.
The ankle portion may have a region of reinforcement, which may be of thicker neoprene. This advantageously provides support for the ankle region of a player.
The unitary shin guard may be made from an open cell foam or optionally a closed cell foam, although this may not absorb impact as well as open cell foam.
A base layer of the sock and the closed pocket of the sock may be made from neoprene, which may be breathable. The base layer may be covered with a nylon stretch exterior.
The sole and toe region of the foot portion may be covered with cushioning material.
The cushioning material may be wool, nylon or neoprene, or any suitable cushioning material.
An upper peripheral region of the leg portion may be elastic and may be made from neoprene of greater thickness to that of the base layer.
At least a part of the upper peripheral region of the leg portion may be folded downwards to further conceal the zip, when the opening is fully closed by the zip.
The sock may be handed and the opening and fastening means may be provided along an interior facing region of the sock between the calf and the shin of the wearer.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a pair of socks for sports comprising a left and a right handed sock in accordance with the first aspect of the invention.
Description of the Drawings
For a better understanding of the present invention, and to show more clearly how it may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a schematic perspective view of a sock from the front; Figure 2 shows a schematic side view of the sock of Figure 1; Figure 2A, inset, shows a schematic side opening and zip fastener in the sock of Figure 1; and Figure 3 shows a schematic front view of the sock of Figure 1.
Description of Preferred Embodiments
Referring firstly to Figure 1, a sock for sports is indicated generally at 10. The sock 10 includes a foot portion 12, an ardde portion 14 and a leg portion 16. The sock 10 may be made from a base layer of breathable neoprene foam covered with a hard wearing nylon stretch exterior. A pocket 18 is integrally provided in the shin region at the front of the sock 10 and encloses a shin guard 20 made from open cell foam.
Optionally the shin guard may be made from closed cell foam or other suitable materials. The shin guard 20 extends from an upper region of the ankle portion 14 upwards across the front of the sock to the underside of an upper elasticised portion 22 and extends around the sides of the shin to the interior and exterior regions of the leg, i.e. between the shin and calf on either side of the leg.
Referring also to Figures 2 and 2a, an opening 24 is provided longitudinally of the sock between the ankle portion 14 and the upper distal end of the sock 10. The opening is fastened together by a zip 26. In use, when the opening is zipped up as shown in Figure 2, a flap of material 28 extends over the top of the zip fastener 26, thus preventing the zip 26 from snagging on the other sock of the person wearing the sock, or the sock of another player.
Referring also to Figure 3, the sole and toe region of the foot portion 12 are covered with an extra layer of cushioning material 30, such as wool, nylon or neoprene.
Furthermore, the ankle portion 14 is reinforced with a thicker layer of neoprene which extends from below the shin guard 20 and abuts therewith, down on to the top of the foot. The ankle portion 14 wraps around the foot and the heel, and covers the malleolus. The upper region 22 of the sock 10 is elasticated and is also made from a thicker layer of neoprene. This may be folded down, as desired, to add further protection to the zip fastener.
In use, there are provided left and right handed socks 10 which are provided in pairs, and which can be provided in any suitable size. When putting on a sock 10, the zip fastener 26 can be undone, thereby leaving an opening in the side of the sock extending from the upper end of the sock down to an upper region of the ankle portion 18. The opening is disposed on an interior facing region of the sock between the calf and shin of the wearer. It is in a straight forward matter for a person to insert their foot into the foot and ankle portion of the sock, and to engage the ankle portion 14 of the sock around their heel. The leg portion 16 of the sock 10 can then be disposed around the leg of the wearer, and the zip fastener 26 done up in order to close the opening 24 and secure the sock to the leg. It will be appreciated that in use, the zip fasteners are completely covered and also are on the inside of the legs facing one another, thereby reducing the risk of the zips becoming caught or snagged.
In order to remove the sock, the zip fastener 26 is released and the person's foot can easily be removed from the foot and ankle portion of the sock. The sock 10 can be washed without removing the shin guard 20 which is contained within the closed pocket 18. This is advantageous, because there are no parts of the sock or shin guard, which can become mislaid.
It will be appreciated that in use the sock provides enhanced protection of the shin region, provides ankle support and also is comfortable due to the cushioning of the toe region and sole. The access provided to the sock by the opening 24 makes it easy for young children to put the socks on and off unaided, and the zip fastener 26 is well protected by the covering fabric 28.
