Abstract

Adding and subtracting apparatus; distin. guishing-colours.-In a computing typewriter provided with bi-colour printing controlled, in conjunction with the add-or-subtract mechanism, means are provided whereby the colour of an entry may be manually changed independently of the add-or-subtract reversing key, but upon subsequent operation of the latter the normal relationship of the parts is resumed. The invention is shown in Fig. 1 as applied to a Reming- ton typewriter provided with the Wahl computing mechanism and with a bi-coloured ribbon mechanism such as that described in Specification 11228/15, [Class 100 (iv), Typewriters &c.]. The machine may be set for addition or subtraction by means of a finger-lever 33 and a temporary change-over may be effected by holding down a key 37, these controls acting jointly upon a floating lever 24 to rock a. shaft 20 and so slide a rod 13 to effect the necessary alteration of the gearing 10, 12 transmitting the differential actuations to the master pinion 7. If it is desired to reverse the add-or-subtract action for a lengthy period, another key 45 may be depressed so as to rock a lever 41 and raise a slotted link 40 connected with key 37 and thus with the add-or-subtract mechanism. The lever 41 is retained in rocked position by the engagement with a fixed pin 50 of a slotted arm 47 which extends from the key lever 44 pivoted on lever 41. The arm is held by an offshoot 48<1> of the slot and is released by depression of a key 46 upon the third arm of lever 44. The lever 41 is mounted loosely on a spindle 4 connected at 5, 6 with the ribbon vibrator, and is yieldingly connected with the spindle by means of a spring-pressed ball that is carried by a collar 51 pinned to the spindle and co-operates with holes in the hub of the lever. The machine being set by lever 33 as shown for subtraction and red typing, depression of key 45 will rock lever 41 and thus caused bv means of link 40 and the spindle 4 the change to addition and black typing. If now it is desired to type an item in red without changing back to subtraction the hub 51 may be turned counterclockwise by means of wings 53 to rock spindle 4 back again, the detent ball permitting this and entering an adjacent hole in the lever 41. If subsequently the key 46 is depressed to restore the lever 41 and the change-over mechanism, the detent ball reenters its normal hole and the usual relationship between the lever 41 and the ink-ribbon vibrator is thus resumed. In the arrangement shown a pin 61 fixed to spindle 4 plays in a recess in the hub of lever 41 so that the change from black to red is permitted 'but not from red to black. In a modification the pin is not used and the ball co-operates with three holes in the hub to permit the change of colour in either direction.
