Abstract
An apparatus for mounting exercise equipment 10 to fit between door frame uprights 11 has a planar surface 17 for attachment of a fingerboard used by rock climbers or other exercise equipment. The apparatus has mounts 12 that can be adjusted via a series of staggered apertures 14 through which bolts are used to affix the mounts 12; fine adjustment may be achieved by slotted apertures 13 in the mounts. The adjustable mounts 12 may have profiled tongues (19, figure 3) which allow the apparatus to be rapidly placed and removed from the door frame 11. The profiled tongues (19) are designed to engage slotted openings in brackets 22. The Brackets 22 are to be affixed to the inside surfaces of the doorframe uprights, then the apparatus can be adjusted to fit the width of the door frame. Once adjusted the apparatus can be rapidly placed and removed without need for re-adjustment.
Description
APPARATUS FOR MOUNTING EXERCISE EQUIPMENT
The present invention relates to apparatus for mounting exercise equipment within a door frame, particularly but not exclusively for mounting fingerboards.
A fingerboard is a training aid used in by rock climbers primarily to increase finger and arm strength. Fingerboards are usually machined from timber or cast in resin and have a plurality of variously sized and shaped recesses and edges to mimic the holds that would be found on rock. These holds" allow the user to perform different exercises to build finger and arm strength.
Fingerboards must be securely mounted to a flat vertical surface with a clear space below to allow the user to hang naturally. A particular disadvantage is that it is often difficult to find a suitable surface on which to mount a fingerboard, and in most domestic situations the only effective location is above a doorway. However many internal walls are not able to safely withstand the loads exerted by the use of this training aid. Another disadvantage is the need for DIY skills in order to fit a fingerboard, and that drilling holes in the internal walls of a property may be undesirable/unacceptable such as in the case of rented accommodation.
It is at least one object of the present invention to provide apparatus to mount an exercise apparatus such as a fingerboard that overcomes these disadvantages.
The apparatus may also provide means in which to mount other variations of rock climbing training equipment.
According to the present invention apparatus for mounting exercise apparatus in a door frame comprises a pair of frame engaging members adapted to be securely attached on to each upright of the door frame, means to securely attach said frame engaging members to the exercise equipment so that at least one frame engaging member is adjustable relative to the other frame engaging member.
Preferably the frame engaging members are attached to a panel to which the exercise apparatus is securely mounted and each frame engaging member comprises at least one tongue adapted to slot into a groove in its respective upright.
Preferably there is provided on each frame engaging member a pair of substantially vertically aligned tongues adapted to slot in respective vertically aligned grooves which may be formed in the uprights of the frame or are formed in a pair of brackets attached to the uprights by any suitable means, such as by Preferably the frame engaging members are attached to the panel by screws or bolts though apertures in the panel and the means to adjust at least one of the frame engaging members is provided by slotted apertures in the panel. Preferably both frame engaging members are adjustable.
The frame engaging members are substantially planar in a plane parallel to the equipment or may slide or screw out of the panel to provide adjustability.
The panel and frame engaging members may be made of any suitable material such as wood, plastics, metal or combination thereof.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a rear view of apparatus for mounting exercise equipment mounted in position on a door frame; Figure 2 is a view of the apparatus of Figure 1 viewed from above; Figure 3 is an assembly detail of one end of the apparatus; Figure 4 is a rear view of on end of the apparatus mounted in a door frame; Figure 5 corresponds to Figure 2b but shows the front view; Figure 6 is a front perspective view of the apparatus mounted in a door frame; and Figure 7 is a rear perspective view of the apparatus mounted in a door frame.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, apparatus (10) for mounting exercise equipment comprises a panel (17) to which a fingerboard (not shown) would be affixed. In the case of this embodiment the panel is conveniently constructed from plywood to allow a wide range of training devices to be affixed thereof.
Mounted between the uprights (11) of a door frame the apparatus (10) further comprises a pair of frame engaging members (12), adjustably mounted on the panel (17) by bolts (18) though a series of staggered apertures (14). To allow for fine adjustment the frame engaging members also has a series of slotted apertures (15) corresponding to those of the panel.
The frame engaging members (12) engage brackets (22) that are secured to the uprights (11) of the doorframe.
Referring to Figures 3 to 5, rapid placement/removal of the apparatus (10) within the doorframe is achieved by slots (21) in the brackets (22) that are engaged by tongues (19) frame engaging members (12). The slotted apertures (20) and machine screws/bolts (23) are also depicted.
Referring to now to Figures 6 and 7 the apparatus is depicted in-situ within a doorframe (32) using the frame engaging members and brackets. The front view (24) shows the staggered apertures (25) for general adjustment and the slotted openings (27) in the brackets (26).
