Abstract

Disclosed is a voice activated device for accessing the internet and answering questions using internet based search engines. The device has a omni-directional microphone, speakers and a processor to execute voice recognition, search management and text to speech software. The device is connected by a WIFI connection to wireless router which accesses the internet. The device has an on/off/reset switch and volume control for the speakers and headphones. The router may also be a docking station and charger for the device. The device is cube or cylindrical or pyramid on a square base and build in a range of coloured plastics. The device may be used as a quiz master question generator, by general or specific subjects and score keeper.

Description

The Knowm-It-All: Description
The Knowm-It-All is a voice activated table-top device connected to the internet through a wireless connection. It is designed to be used in a social setting such as a dinner-party where access to a computer with key board and screen would not be appropriate.
However, the guest users would be able to ask the Knowm-It-All to check or supply facts through a search engine and the world-wide-web. Application software can also be used to allow the Knowm-It-All to act as quiz master to the group and ask general knowledge or specialist subject questions to the group.
The Knowm-It-All is a computer controlled and voice activated information retrieval device approximately 6 inches high and able to be placed on a table or desk. Input to the device is primarily by voice commands which are picked up by an integral omni-directional microphone comfortable of handling up to 4 different voices.
The device is initially turned on by pressing a button at its base. This action will power on the processor under the control of a third-party operating system software such as Opera TM Software upgrades will also be automatically downloaded as when and when required without user intervention. When the device is ready, it will speak its name as given to it as part of the user controlled setting up procedure through the integral load-speaker. It will then seek to establish a Wi-Fi link to a wireless router; WPE/WAP keys may be entered by voice when setting up the device for the first time, again as part of the setting up procedure.
Once in operation all commands to the device will be preceded by saying its user-given name. The voice command is then converted into text by third-party voice recognition software. The syntax of the command may be changed by propriety software developed by Knowm-It-All for input to a third party search engine. The engines might include Google and Wikipedia.
For example the Command: Robot, when was the Battle of Hastings might be converted to a search command of <Battle-of-Hastings when>. The search input entry is then passed onto the web through the users' wireless router and Information Service Provider (ISP).
When the device receives the response from the search, it will then convert the first 100 words of text into spoken words output on the integral speaker system. The user will be able to ask for <more> if the first block of information is insufficient or drill down his search using further search commands.
The term <Thank You, name> will place the device in hibernation mode and it will stop attempting to put voice into text until the resume touch sensitive pad on the device is touched or the command <name, resume> is spoken.
The device will be available in various coloured plastic and in a choice of shapes including a cube, a cylinder and a square based pyramid. The footprint will be less than 36 square inches.
The device will come with a docking station that will allow a USB connection, if required to a computer for error diagnosis and network set up or a keyboard for alternative data entry. Battery recharging may be done either through the docking station or direct to the device.
