Abstract

A radio remote controller includes a directional receiver 3 and a micro-controller 5, which can detect and identify external electromagnetic or optical beacons 1 or 2 situated near devices to be controlled. A radio transmitter 5 in the remote controller is then used to send different commands to a device 7 depending on which beacon is detected. The remote controller allows simple control by pointing and pushing a button and can be used to control garage doors, home appliances etc.

Description

Remote controller This invention relates to a radio remote controller.
Remote controllers are either specific to one device, e.g. garage doors, or have multiple buttons to permit several devices or functions to be controlled, e.g. TV remote control.
Multiple buttons require a large size, and both knowledge and dexterity by the operator. These problems have long been the barrier to the emergence of personal remote controls for electric door locking and home automation.
The invention solves these problems by allowing the operator to select the function by pointing the controller at one of a number of electromagnetic or optical beacon devices to control a number of different devices or functions.
The controller can then be very small, easy to use, and low cost.
Each beacon would send a unique signal so that it could be identified by the controller.
The beacons would be placed in appropriate locations.
For example a beacon sending the code for open garage door and another beacon sending the code for shut garage door would be sited beside the door.
The door could then be opened or closed by pointing the remote controller at one beacon or the other.
The same controller could be used to operate many different devices about the home and other premises as a universal personal remote control.
The invention will now be described solely by way of example by referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 shows a block diagram of the remote controller as well as two beacons and a device that is being controlled.
Figure 2 shows a practical implementation of the remote controller as well as practical implementations of a beacon and a device that is being controlled.
In Figure 1, the remote controller consisting of a directional receiver 3, a micro-controller 4, a radio transmitter 5, and a push button for activation 6, can be made to send different commands to the external device by pointing it at different beacons 1 or 2. Pressing the button 6 powers up the controller.
The micro-controller 4 determines which beacon has been detected by the code from the directional receiver 3 and uses the transmitter 5 to send a corresponding command to the external device 7.
A practical implementation In figure 2, the beacons 1,2, each consist of a battery powered Microchip P1C16F688 microcontroller driving an infra-red led at 36KHz which is on/off keyed to send identification data in a standard serial data format.
The remote controller uses an infra-red receiver module Vishay TS0P34836 3 from which the recovered data is passed to a P1C16F688 4. The data is then transmitted using a Radiometrix TX2 transmitter module 5. After transmission it powers down so there is no drain on its 3 Volt lithium cell. Point it at a beacon and press the Activate button 6 to make it work.
The radio signal is received by a Radiometrix RX2 module 7 and passed to a P1C16F688 8 which has been programmed to have an output for each of the beacons. When the identification data is received the output corresponding to the source beacon is pulsed. The outputs are connected via BC183C NPN driver transistors 9 to relays 10 which close momentarily. The relay contacts 11 are connected across the open and close push button switches of a garage door 12 so that it will open or close as the appropriate beacon is detected.
The infra-red receiver 3 is made to be more directional by recessing it down a tube in the remote controller housing.

Claims (2)

  1. Claims 1) A radio remote controller comprising of a directional receiver, to detect and differentiate between a number of external electromagnetic or optical beacons, that is connected to a radio transmitter so as to send different commands to an external device depending upon which beacon is detected.
  2. 2) A radio remote controller according to claim 1, which includes its own identity in the transmission so that the controlled device may not be operated by unauthorised users.
