Abstract
A direct replacement bulb based on light emitting diodes (LEDs) or surface mount devices (SMDs) 6 which complies with the angular, luminous and hue requirements of sea regulations. The invention comprises collimators or dividers 1 to prevent colour bleed and mixing between adjacent light sources of different colors. The light producing area of the bulb 4 is rotatable independently of the base 5 to facilitate the alignment of coulored sectors of the bulb.
Description
Title:-Bi or Tn colour LED/SMD bulb
Background:
The prevention of collision at sea regulations require that Tn-colour lamps have a white sector of 135 degrees, a green sector of 112.5 degrees and a red sector of 112.5 degrees within a 360 degree radius. Bi-colour lamps must have two sectors each of 112.5 degrees, one red and one green within a 225 degree radius. Each sector must be clearly defined within regulated colour frequency or temperature (kelvins). The lamp must deliver a regulatory luminance depending on the size of the vessel.
Conventional white and warm white LED bulbs used in a tn or bi-colour lantern fail to meet the prescribed requirements for colour accuracy or for luminance.
A bulb with vertical rows of LED's in each of green, red and white sectors would fail to meet the regulations relating to angle and definition of light colour. A bulb with three sets of coloured. LED's may not be able. to align. within, the lantern. such. that the red is behind.
red etc, unless skilled changes are made, for instance by replacing the bulb holder.

statement of invention:-
This invention proposes a bi or tn-coloured SMD/LED bulb to be used as a direct replacement for an incandescent bulb in a bi or tn colour lantern without having to change the bulb holder. The bulb is constructed to ensure the correct angles for each colour of light and to prevent colour bleed' between the sectors. The bulb base will allow for movement of the bulb within the base to achieve correct alignment of colour segments within the existin tn or bi-cotour lantern.
Advantages: -The bulLy wilt aflow the usec to retain the existing lantern and bulb holder.
The bulb will be a direct bulb replacement and therefore suitable for fitting by a non-qualified person.
The requirements of the Prevention of collisions at sea regulations. relating to angles of colour and luminance will be met.
Introduction to Drawings:-
Figure 1 shows the tn-colour bulb viewed from the top. Figure 2 shows the tn-colour bulb viewed from the bottom. Figure 3 shows a tn-colour bulb viewed from one side.
Detailed Descnition: The bulb will be divided into the three defined areas as laid down by the preventtori of collisions at sea regulations which appertain to marine navigation lights. The width of each area will be such that one area will result in an angle of 135 degrees radiating out from the centre of the bulb and the other two areas will result in angles of 112.5 degrees radiating out from the centre of the bulb. For a tn-coloured bulb, on the area creating a 135 degree angle will be a white light source of SMD/LED's. See Figs 1,2 and 3 (note 6). For a bi coloured bulb the surface creating the 135 degree angle will have no light source. For each bulb type, one of the other areas will have a red SMD/LED light source and the third area will have a green SMD/LED light source. See Figs 1,2 and 3 (note 6). The three areas will form a three-sided light source which will be housed in a clear outer casing. See Figure 1, notes 2 açc Each side will be separated by a collimator (or divider), which will be in contact with the inner side of the bulb casing. See Figure 1, note 1.
The SMD/LED light source will be set back from the edges of the collimators (dividers) in order to ensure that there is no colour bleed from the individual areas of the red, green or white sectors of the light and it will maintain the areas as prescribed by the prevention of collision at sea regulations. See Figure 1.
The bulb base see Figure 3, notes 4 and 5, will allow the bulb to rotate so that the coloured sectors of the bulb body can be aligned with the matthing lens colours in the lantern. The rotating mechanism will be able to be secured within the bulb base once the correct colour orientation has been achieved.
The bulb will locate inside the existing standard bulb holder within the lantern.
Claims (4)
