Abstract
A method is provided of using the mechanical support column 130 of an optic 100 intended to provide light from a primary light source to the output surface for the additional purpose of guiding light from a secondary light source 180 to the light output surface 105. The method comprises of placing a secondary light source 180 behind the disc 140 containing the primary light source on which the optic is located such that the light from the secondary light source 180 is guided to the optic light output surface 105 through the support column 130. The light can be of a specific colour to indicate a system status, for example the battery level in a portable lighting solution.
Description
I
Portable Light
The present invention is a portable light comprising a light output surface, a primary light source for providing light to the light output surface, and a support structure for supporting the light output surface wherein the support structure is adapted to guide light from a secondary light source to the light output surface.
A number of optical lenses, referred to as optics, are commercially available whose main function is to focus or diffuse the light from a primary light source. These optics are typically solid parts made from a clear plastic material. Shaped surfaces on the optic perform the function of traditional reflectors by using internal reflection to direct the light through a light output surface. Such optics often include physical columns to mechanically support and align the optic and it's output surface at a fixed distance from a disc where the primary light source is located. The primary light source is typically one or more high powered light emitting devices.
The optics described are commonly used in portable lighting solutions. In portable lighting solutions it is often desirable to also indicate to the user a system status such as remaining battery level. For this status indication purpose a secondary light source and separate light guiding structure is typically used. As discussed further below, the applicant has identified that the physical supporting columns commonly found on optics can be used for the additional purpose of guiding a status light from a secondary light source to the light output surface. This removes the need for a separate light guiding structure and associated parts.
The present invention is a portable light comprising a light output surface, a primary light source for providing light to the light output surface, and a support structure for supporting the light output surface, characterised by comprising a secondary light source and also characterised in that the support structure is adapted to guide light from the secondary light source to the light output surface.
The support structure for supporting the light output surface may comprise at least one support column.
The secondary light source may be used to indicate a system status.
The light from the secondary light source may used to indicate battery level status.
The light from the secondary light source may be used for illumination.
The light from the secondary light source may be used for emergency illumination in the case where the primary light source fails.
The primary light source may comprise one or more high power light emitting devices.
The secondary light source may comprise a light emitting device.
Reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1(a) and Figure 1(b) show the underside and topside respectively of a typical triple optic to which an embodiment of the present invention can be applied, and, Figure 2(a) and Figure 2(b) show an exploded and assembled view respectively of the hardware arrangement of an embodiment of the present invention.
As mentioned above, a number of commercial optics are available that serve the purpose of focussing and diffusing the light output from a primary light source. Such optics often include a number of mechanical columns whose function is to support and locate the optic with respect to a disc on which the primary light source is attached. The applicant has identified that these support columns can be used for the additional purpose of guiding light from a secondary light source to the light output surface. This secondary light source could be of a certain colour and could be used for the purpose of showing a status to the user. This secondary light source could also be used for the purpose of an emergency light output should the primary light source fail.
As illustrated in Figure 1(a) and (b), a solid optic 100 typically includes a number of reflector features 110, 115, 120, a light output surface 105, and a number of support columns 125, 130, 135.
Figure 2(a) and (b) show an exploded and assembled view respectively of an embodiment of the present invention. The optic support columns 125, 130, 135 locate into a metal disc 140 and serve two purposes. The first purpose is to mechanically support the optic structure 100 on the metal disc 140. The second purpose is to align the optic structure 100 with the primary light source which in this example comprises three high powered light emitting devices 145, 150, 155. These light emitting devices are attached onto the disc 140. The ends of the support columns 125, 130, 135 are located in matching slots in the disc 160, 165, 170 and as such are visible from beneath the disc 140. A secondary light source 180 is placed on circuit board 175 below the disc 140 where the primary light source 145, 150, 155 is attached. The secondary light source 180 is aligned with one of the supporting columns 130 such that the light it produces is guided to the light output surface 105 of the optic 100 through the supporting colunm 130. This allows a status light to be indicated on the light output surface 105 of the optic.
It will be appreciated that various modifications of the above embodiment can be made within the scope of the present invention as set out in the appended claims. For example, there may be fewer or greater than three reflectors in the optic body 100. There could be any number of mechanical support columns, 125, 130, 135 and these could be placed anywhere on the optic body 100. The disc 140 on which the primary light source 145, 150, 155 is attached could be of any shape and the primary light source may comprise any number of light emitting devices. The circuit board 175 could be omitted and the secondary light source 180 could be supported by another method. The secondary light source 180 could be of any shape.
