Abstract

A multiple sport board assembly 401 is described. The multiple sport board assembly is capable of defining at least two sport boards. The multiple sport board assembly comprises (i) a first platform capable of defining a first sport board 420; and (ii) a second platform 410. The first platform and the second platform are releasably mountable to each other. The first platform and the second platform are releasably securable to each other when they are releasably mounted to each other. When the first platform and the second platform are releasably mounted and secured to each other they define a second sport board 415. The first platform may be releasably mountable and securable within the second platform. Alternatively, the second platform may comprise at least one component that is releasably mountable to an edge surface of the first platform.

Description

ASSEMBLY
Field of invention
The present invention relates to an assembly.
In particular, the present invention relates to an assembly for use in sports.
Background
Board sports are becoming increasingly popular. Examples of board sports include the use of snow boards, skis, sand boards, paddle boards, windsurfer boards, kite surfer boards, wake boards, body boards, skim boards, and surf boards. These boards and other examples of boards are referred to as sport boards.
The performance of a sports board may be dictated by its length, widths, thicknesses, profile of the outer surface of the front side, profile of the outer surface of the reverse side, edges, materials etc. In addition, it is to be noted that not one sport board will be applicable to all conditions for that sport.
Hence, the user is confronted with many choices -and one particular sport board may not suit all conditions.
Users of sport boards are sometimes faced with problems. For example, the predicted conditions (e.g. of the snow or the surf or the wind) are not always 100% accurate -meaning that the user may be faced with an inappropriate sport board for the condition, or that he/she would have taken a more appropriate sport board if the weather conditions had been predicted to a 100% accuracy.
As another example of a problem, conditions often change during the day (such as the heat of the sun may affect snow conditions, tides change surf conditions etc.).
Thus, if the user has just one board with himlher, then he/she may not have a sport board that could suit all conditions for that day.
As another example of a problem, users are often faced with minimal packaging space (in particular on some airlines or with some vehicles) -meaning that they may only be able to take one sports board with them. This may be problematic if it is not possible to hire additional sports boards at the destination. It may also be problematic if the user would like to combine sporting activities -such as windsurfing and surfing -and he/she can only take with hinilher one board for one activity.
Broad aspect of the present invention The present invention seeks to provide a solution to at least the aforementioned problems.
The present invention provides a multiple sport board assembly.
The multiple sport board assembly of the present invention is capable of defining at least two sport boards.
The multiple sport board assembly comprises (i) a first platform capable of defining a first sport board; and (ii) a second platform.
The first platform and the second platform are releasably mountable to each other.
The first platform and the second platform are releasably securable to each other when they are releasably mounted to each other.
When the first platform and the second platform are releasably mounted and secured to each other they define a second sport board.
Sport boards of the present invention The sport board of the present invention may be any suitable sport board.
Preferred examples of sport boards of the present invention may be selected from: snow boards, paddle boards, skis, sand boards, windsurfer boards, kite surfer boards, wake boards, body boards, skim boards, surf boards, and combinations thereof.
The sports boards may be for the same or different sports. An example of different sports would be windsurfing and surfing. Another example of different sports would be paddleboards and surfing. An example of same sports would be surfing.
Thus, example combinations of the present invention include: a surfboard as the first sport board, and a larger surfboard as the second sport board; a surfboard as the first sport board, and a larger windsurfer board as the second sport board; a surfboard as the first sport board, and a larger paddle board as the second sport board; a windsurfer board as the first sport board, and a larger windsurfer board as the second sport board; a kite board as the first sport board, and a larger surfboard as the second sport board; a body board as the first sport board, and a larger surfboard as the second sport board.
In one preferred aspect, the present invention provides a surfboard as the first sport board, and a larger surfboard as the second sport board.
Preferred aspects of the present invention Some preferred aspects of the present invention will now be described.
Preferably, the second platform comprises at least one component that is releasably mountable to an edge surface of the first platform.
Preferably, the first platform is mountable within at least a portion of the second platform.
Preferably, the second platform has a space to accommodate all of the first platform.
Preferably, the space extends from at least the reverse side of the second platform.
Preferably, the first platform is securable to the second platform by means of a snap-fit arrangement.
Preferably, the first platform is securable to the second platform by means of a snap-fit arrangement between at least a part of the edge surface of the first platform and at least an inner edge surface of the second platform.
Preferably, the second platfonn comprises at least one component that is releasably mountable to the an end edge surface of the first platform.
Preferably, the second platform comprises at least one component selected from: a component that is releasably mountable to a nose edge surface of the first platform, a component that is releasably mountable to a tail edge surface of the first platform, and the combination thereof.

Specific aspects of the present invention According to the present invention there is provided a multiple sport board assembly capable of defining at least two sport boards; the multiple sport board assembly comprising: (i) a first platform capable of defining a first sport board; and (ii) a second platform; wherein the first platform and the second platform are releasably mountable to each other; wherein the first platform and the second platform are releasably securable to each other when they are releasably mounted to each other; and wherein when the first platform and the second platform are releasably mounted and secured to each other they define a second sport board.
In one aspect of the present invention there is provided a multiple sport board assembly capable of defining at least two sport boards; the multiple sport board assembly comprising: (i) a first platform capable of defining a first sport board; and (ii) a second platform; wherein the first platform and the second platform are releasably mountable to each other; wherein the first platform and the second platform are releasably securable to each other when they are releasably mounted to each other; wherein when the first platform and the second platform are releasably mounted and secured to each other they define a second sport board; wherein the first platform is mountable within at least a portion of the second platform; wherein the second platform has a space to accommodate all of the first platform; and wherein the space extends from at least the reverse side of the second platform.

Suriboards The present invention will now be described with reference to surfboards.
However, the teachings herein are applicable to other sports boards -such as snow boards, skis, sand boards, paddle boards, windsurfer boards, kite surfer boards, wake boards, body boards, skim boards, etc. Jn this respect, whilst references are made to surfboards and certain surfboard terminology has been used, it is to be understood that some or all of the teachings apply to other sport boards of the present invention (such as snow boards, skis, sand boards, paddle boards, windsurfer boards, kite surfer boards, wake boards, body boards, skim boards) and that the equivalent terminology applies.
Surfboards are known. Examples of some surf'boards are shown in Figures 1 to 3.
With reference to Figiire 1: the surfboard (1) has a front side (or upper side) (3) and a reverse side (or back side or underside) (10). The user typically stands on the front side (3).
The board (1) comprises a top end -which is generally referred to as the nose (15).
The nose (15) is typically the region that extends 12" down from the tip of the board (1).
The board (1) comprises a bottom end -which is generally referred to as the tail (20). The tail (20) is typically the region that extends 12" up from the base of the board (1).
The front side (3) has a section known as the deck (25) between the nose (15) and the tail (20). The user stands on the deck (25) when he/she has caught a wave.
Typically, the deck (25) and in some instances the nose (15) andlor the tail (20) are at least partly coated in a material (not shown) -such as a wax -to improve the adhesion of the user to the board (1) whilst in use. It is possible to obtain waxes and the like (not shown) for a number of water temperatures -such as wax for cold water, wax for cool water, and wax for tropical water. Occasionally, users apply deck grips (not shown) to the deck (25) andlor the tail (20). A deck grip (not shown) is typically a rough-surfaced material (sometimes 2 to 4 cms thick) that is secured to the surfboard by means of adhesive (not shown).
The outer edges (30) of the surfboard (1) are often referred to as the rails (30). The rails (30) are typically the edge of the surfboard (1) where the deck (25) wraps around from the front side (3) to meet the reverse side (10). The rails can have many profiles.
Rails can be described in general terms like hard and soft. They can also be described by their shape characteristics and proportionately as a ratio of distance of the widest point between the deck and the bottom of the board. A round rail is a rail that is almost a complete semi-circle. An egg rail is like a round rail but has an ovoid profile. A down rail comes to an edge at the bottom of the board. A rolled rail is like a down rail but is rolled under the board.
Fuller rails carry more foam -thus providing floatation. Thinner tapered rails carry less foam -thus making it easier for the user to lean on an edge as they are less buoyant. Typically, hard rails do not penetrate the water well at high speeds, whilst softer rails provide a smoother response.
The surfboard (1) is typically formed from shaping a single blank (not shown) or it is injection moulded (not shown) in one piece.
Surfboard blanks are typically foam blocks that are then shaved to the desired profile. The type of blank will largely dictate the strength of the surfboard -in particular the resistance of the surfboard (e.g. the deck) to dents (sometimes referred to as dings). Typically, the heavier the foam of the blank, the better the strength and resistance to dents on the deck. Blanks are typically classified according to foam weight -viz: competition light, light, medium and heavy. Blanks may be made from polystyrene (typically used in combination with epoxy resins) or polyurethane (typically used in combination with polyester resins).
During manufacture, the surfboard (1) is often strengthened by use of a material (35) that extends from the nose (15) to the tail (20). That material is often referred to as the stringer (35). The stringer (35) typically comprises wood or a wood composite or a glue. The stringer (35) generally runs down the centre line of the surfboard (1). The stringers provide strength to the surfboard (1). Some surfboards have a plurality of stringers (not shown).
The nose (15) can have different profiles -ranging from a round profile to a pointed profile.
The tail (20) can have many profiles -ranging from a rounded profile ("round tail"), pin, rounded pin, square tail, squash tail, to cut-in sections to an inset section (e.g. in the shape of a "V" -and is sometimes referred to as a "swallow tail"). With a round tail, the two sides of the surfboard come together in smooth curves to form a semicircle. With a square tail, rails end suddenly, forming a box shape. A squash tail is like a square tail but wherein the square tips are softened. With a swallow tail, the rails end suddenly and a "V" is cut back in towards the stringer.
The distribution of foam from the nose (15) to the tail (20) on the surfboard is known as surfboard foil. If there is excessive foam left in one area -such as the nose or the tail -then the surfboard in use becomes unbalanced. In contrast, a more even distribution of foam will help performance.
When the desired surfboard profile has been prepared, a protective coating is applied over the exterior of the shaped profile. This is typically referred to as glassing. Before the glassing stage, typically the surfboard structure is toughened with fibreglass (typically saturated with resin). Here, fibreglass strips are used to laminate the board and thereby produce a hard outer surface. The fibreglass is often used as fibreglass cloth. Here, glass fibres that are woven into a cloth with weights of about 4oz/1 square yard of cloth or about 6ozJl square yard of cloth or about lOoz/l square yard of cloth, etc. Generally, the fibres are stronger the heavier the weight of the cloth.
In some instances, carbon fibres (sometimes soaked in resin) are laid in strips along the length of a board during glassing to help prevent creasing.
There are available many types of resins that can be used in the production of a surfboard. Typically, a catalyst is used to harden the resin -such as a polyester resin. The time taken for the resin to harden can depend on the amount of catalyst and/or the amount of UV radiation and/or the ambient air temperature.
Surfboard blanks may be formed from polyurethane.
Surfboards may also be formed from expanded polystyrene foam (EPS). Typically EPS foam is used with an epoxy resin to form the surfboard. Generally, EPS foam blanks are very light in weight. Surfboards may also be made from extruded polystyrene foam (ExPS). ExPS foam has a more closed cell structure than EPS foam -making it more strong and more water resistant.
Moulded boards are typically prepared by injecting a plastic moulded shell with expanding foam. Examples of such surfboards are sold by BiC Surfboards.
Some surfboards are made of wood materials, such as balsa wood.
The rocker of a surfboard is the side shape of the surfboard. It is usually further defined as being the top rocker and the bottom rocker. The typical design of a surfboard comprises a flatter curve in the middle of the surfboard, with ever-increasing curves towards the nose section and the tail section. The design of the bottom rocker that includes the tail section of the surfboard can determine the turning characteristics of the surfboard. The design of the top rocker that includes the nose section of the surfboard can determine how easy it is to catch a wave or how much wind resistance the surfboard encounters whilst in use.
The reverse side (10) is often sloped upwards towards the nose (15). The reverse side (10) may include design feature that affect the performance of the surfboard (1). Examples of designs include: flat bottoms, concave designs, Vee design, channels, and combinations thereof. The concave design can yield lift and drive during use.
In the portion at or near to the tail (20) are one or more fins (not shown). Fins are used to assist the control, direction and drive of the surfboard by the user. Many different fin shapes are available. In addition, fins are made out of many different materials are available.
Typically, the fins are located in one or more fin housing boxes (60, 65, 70). Some surfboards have one fin housing box (70). The fins (not shown) are secured into the fin housing boxes (60, 65, 70) by means of suitable locking arrangements. An example of a fin system and locking arrangement is FCS (Fin Control Systems) fins.
Some suriboards have two fin housing boxes (65, 60). Some suriboards have three fin housing boxes (60, 65, 70). Some suriboards have four fin housing boxes (not shown) or even five fin housing boxes (not shown). With a plurality of fin housing boxes, the user can decide how many fins he/she wishes to use and in a particular configuration. A three fin configuration is typically known as a "thruster set-up'.
Other configurations are sometimes called "twin-fin set-up", "quad-fin set-up", etc. The surfboard (1) usually has a securement point (40) to which the user can attach a leash (not shown). The leash is used to attach the user to a surfboard. It is sometimes referred to as a leg rope. The leash is typically a strong elastic polyurethane cord that has at one end a band (not shown) that can form an adjustable collar (not shown) that can be used to secure the collar (and thereby the surfboard) to the ankle or knee of the user. Typically, the collar is securable by Velcro (not shown).
In some instances, the nose may be provided with a guard -sometimes referred to as a nose guard (not shown). Typically the nose guard is adhered to the nose of the surfboard and to provide protection to the actual tip of the surfboard. Nose guards may be formed from any suitable material -such as silicon tip.
Typically, three key surfboard dimensions are noted. The dimensions are quoted in Imperial lengths (feet () and inches (fl))* The first dimension is the length -which is typically measured from the tip of the nose to the end of the base. Typically, the longer the surfboard, the more floatation there is. Also, longer surfboards can be paddled with more ease, and enable the user to catch waves more early. Typically, shorter surfboards turn easier. Generally, short boards are more sensitive to weight transfer.
The second dimension is the width -which is typically measured across the greatest width of the deck (25). The wider the surfboard the more foam it contains -which enhances floatation of the surfboard. Typically, narrow boards are more suited to fast hollow waves. Generally, surfboards with wider noses are easier to paddle easier, whereas narrower noses enhance movement. Generally, surfboards with a wider tail feel looser at low speeds than suriboards with a narrower tail. Typically, surfboards with a narrow tail are better suited for larger and hollower surf conditions.
The third dimension is the thicknesses which is typically measured as being the distance the outer surface of the front side (25) and the outer surface of the reverse side (10).
Additional dimensions are other widths along the length of the board from nose to tail. For example, nose width is typically measured 12" down from the tip towards the base. Tail width is typically measured 12" up from the base towards the tip.
Surfboards are typically classified depending on the inter-relationship of these three dimensions (i.e. length, width and thickness). Examples of surfboard types are: long boards; fish; short board; contemporary short board; mini-mal; gun; mini-gun; semi-gun; egg; fun board; rhino chaser; retro surfboard, a hybrid surfboard and a soft board.
By way of example, short boards are usually between about 5'6" to about 7'O" long, with a width between about 16" to about 19", and a thickness from about 1.75" to about 2.75". Depending on the profile of the short board, the nose width can vary from about 10" to about 12", whereas the tail width can vary from about 12.5" to about 14.5". The bottom rocker may be about 5" to 6" in the nose, and from about 2" to 3" in the tail.
By way of further example, long boards are usually between about 6' to about 12' long (typically between 8'6" to I 0'6"), with a width between about 20" to about 26", and a thickness from about 2.5" to about 4". Depending on the profile of the long board, the nose width can vary from about 15" to about 20", whereas the tail width can vary from about 12" to about 15.5". The bottom rocker may be about 5" to 6" in the nose, and from about 2" to 5" in the tail. Typically they have a rounded nose.
The tail shapes are generally square or rounded-pin shapes.
By way of further example, hybrid boards are intermediate a long board and a short board. They are usually between about 6'S" to about 9' long, with a width between about 20" to about 23", and a thickness from about 2.5" to about 3.5". Depending on the profile of the long board, the nose width can vary from about 13" to about 17", whereas the tail width can vary from about 13" to about 16". The tail is generally square.
By way of further example, an egg is similar to a hybrid. The egg typically has a rounded-pin tail.
By way of further example, a fish (Fish or FISH) comprises a wide nose and broad swallow-type tail design, with a twin-fin setup. But recently, the term generally refers to any short, stubby, wide surfboard.
By way of further example, a fun board has dimensions that combine the float of a long board (enabling a user to paddle out into the waves easier) but does not have the length and volume as a long board.
By way of further example, a soft board typically has a deck constructed of a strong foam-like material. In some instances, the bottom of the surfboard is also of a firm foam-like material.
With reference to Figure 2: the surfboard (200) has a front side (or upper side) (203) and a reverse side (or back side or underside) (not shown). The board (200) comprises a nose (215). The board (200) comprises a tail (220). The front side (203) has a deck (225). The surfboard (200) has rails (230). The surfboard (200) has a stringer (235). The nose (215) has a pointed profile. The tail (220) is like a squash tail. The rocker from above the mid-section is sloping upwards towards the nose (215). In the portion at or near to the tail (220) on the reverse side are three fins in a thruster arrangement (only two shown: (275) and (276)). The surfboard (200) has a securement point (240) to which is attached a leash (280). The leash (280) comprises a polyurethane cord (282) and a band (285) that has formed an adjustable collar. The collar is securable by Velcro (not shown).
With reference to Figure 3: four different styles of surfboard are shown ((301), (310), (320) and (330)). Surfboard (301) is a mini-gun. Surfboard (310) is a mini-mal. Surfboard (320) is a fish. Surfboard (330) is a long board.
When suitably adapted for the present invention, such as described herein, any of the above described surfloards andlor surfboard features may be the first sport board.
In addition, or in the alternative, the second sport board can be adapted to accommodate any of the above described surthoards and/or surfboard features which may be the first sport board.
Likewise, when suitably adapted for the present invention, such as described herein, any of the above described surfboards andlor surfboard features may be the second sport board.
Advantages of the present invention Advantages of the present invention are apparent. Some of the advantages are described herein.
For example, the user is now able to travel to a certain location with at least two sports boards and then chose which board to use for the actual conditions that he/she is confronted with.
For example, with the present invention, the user is able to take to a locatidn at least two different surfboard profiles. Therefore, he/she can select the more suitable profile for the conditions that he/she is faced with.
By having at least two sports boards in one assembly means that volume taken up by the sports boards is less than if they were to be carried separately.
With the assembly of the present invention, the profile of -for example -the second sport board may be easily changed by changing the profile of the second platform.
With some arrangements (such as those described herein) a user may even have at least three sports boards or even at least four sports boards.
With the present invention, the user may have additional platforms -thereby increasing the number and also the types of sports boards that are contained within the assembly of the present invention.
For example, the assembly may comprise a third platform, wherein the third platform and the second are releasably mountable to each other; wherein the third platform and the second platform are releasably securable to each other when they are releasably mounted to each other; and wherein when the third platform and the second platform are releasably mounted and secured to each other they define a third sport board.
Thus, additional combinations of the present invention include: a surfboard as the first sport board, and a larger surfboard as the second sport board, and an even larger surfboard as a third sport board; a surfboard as the first sport board, and a larger windsurfer board as the second sport board, and a paddle board as a third sport board; a kite board as the first sport board, and a larger surfboard as the second sport board, and a windsurfer board as a third sport board; a body board as the first sport board, and a larger surfboard as the second sport board, and a paddle board as a third sport board.
Assembly of the present invention As already mentioned, Figures 1 to 3 describe examples of surfboards that may be the first sport board in the assembly of the present invention.
Figures 4 to 11 will now be described that demonstrate a series of assemblies according to the present invention.
As indicated above, Figure 4 is a schematic diagram of the front side of an assembly according to the present invention.
In Figure 4: the surfboard assembly (401) comprises a second platform (410) and a first surfboard (420). The second platform (410) is releasably mounted and releasably secured to the first surfboard (420). The second platform (410) is releasably mountable and releasably securable to the first surfboard (420) by means of a snug snap fit arrangement. Together, the second platform (410) and the first surfboard (420) define the second surfboard (415). The first surfboard (420) has a front side (or upper side) (425) and a reverse side (or back side or underside) (not shown). The board (420) comprises a nose (435). The board (420) comprises a tail (440). The front side (420) has a deck (430). The surfboard (420) has rails (445) that form a snug fit that is a releasable and securable snap fit arrangement. The surfboard (420) has a stringer (450). The nose (435) has a pointed profile. The tail (440) is rounded. The rocker from above the mid-section is gently sloping upwards towards the nose (435). In the portion at or near to the tail (440) on the reverse side are three fin boxes (not shown) into which three fins can be mounted in a thruster arrangement (not shown). Like the first surfboard (420), the rocker of the second platform (410) from above the mid-section is gently sloping upwards towards the nose (480). The rocker shape profile of the first surfboard and the second platform are matched. In the portion at or near to the tail (440) on the reverse side are three fin boxes (not shown) into which three fins can be mounted in a thruster arrangement (not shown).
The second platform (410) has a securement point (470) to which is attachable a leash (not shown). Additional attachment means may be provided -such as to the upper surfaces of the first surfboard and the second platform (such as releasable bindings) (not shown). The assembly of the present invention as shown in Figure 4 thus provides to the user the combination of a short surfboard and a long surfboard.
As indicated above, Figure 6 is a schematic diagram of the component parts of one aspect of the present invention that can form the assembly of the present invention.
In Figure 6: the respective parts of the assembly of Figure 4 are shown. Here, the surfboard assembly comprises a second platform (410) and a first surfboard (420).
The second platform (410) is releasably mountable and releasably securable to the first surfboard (420). The second platform (410) is releasably mountable and releasably securable to the first surfboard (420) by means of a snug snap fit arrangement. Together, and when securely mounted to each other, the second platform (410) and the first surfboard (420) define the second surfboard. The second platform (410) has a securement point (470) to which is attachable a leash (not shown). Additional attachment means may be provided -such as to the upper surfaces of the first surfboard and the second platform (such as releasable bindings) (not shown). The assembly of the present invention as shown in Figure 6 thus provides to the user the combination of a short surfboard and a long surfboard.
As indicated above, Figure 5 is a schematic diagram of the front side of an alternative assembly according to the present invention.
In Figure 5: the surfboard assembly (501) comprises a second platform (503, 504) and a first surfboard (502). The second platform (503, 504) is releasably mounted and releasably secured to the first surfboard (502). The second platform (503, 504) is releasably mountable and releasably securable to the first surfboard (502) by means of a locking mechanism (not shown). That locking mechanism may be a tongue and groove arrangement andlor a screw (or a bolt) and receiving thread arrangement and/or interlockable male and female parts (e.g. wherein the male part slides into a female part and then travels along a sunken chamber to a securing position). Together, the second platform (503, 504) and the first surfboard (502) define the second surfboard (505). Additional attachment means may be provided -such as to the upper surfaces of the first surfboard and the second platform (such as releasable bindings) (not shown).
The assembly shown in Figure 5 will now be described in more detail and with reference to Figure 7 and Figure 8. As indicated above, Figure 7 is a schematic diagram of the component parts of one aspect of the present invention that can form the assembly of the present invention. As indicated above, Figure 8 is a schematic diagram of the component parts of one aspect of the present invention about to be fitted together to form the assembly of the present invention.
With reference to Figures 7 and 8, and still with reference to Figure 5: the surfboard assembly (501) comprises a second platform (503, 504) and a first surfboard (502).
The second platform (503, 504) is releasably mounted and releasably secured to the first surfboard (502). The second platform (503, 504) is releasably mountable and releasably securable to the first surfboard (502) by means of locking mechanisms (generically shown as 532, 533, 535, 537, 542, 547, 544, 549, 528, 526, 524, 522).
The or each locking mechanism may be the same or different. Examples of suitable locking mechanisms are tongue and groove arrangement andlor a screw (or bolt) and receiving thread arrangement and/or interlockable male and female parts (e.g. wherein the male part slides into a female part and then travels along a sunken chamber to a securing position). In the diagram, and by way of example, the locking mechanism may be interlockable male and female parts -wherein male part (532) engages and is securable to female part (524); wherein male part (537) engages and is securable to female part (522); wherein male part (533) engages and is securable to female part (535); wherein male part (544) engages and is securable to female part (528); wherein male part (549) engages and is securable to female part (526); and wherein male part (542) engages and is securable to female part (547). In the alternative, the locking mechanism may be interlockable screw (or bolt) and receiving thread parts -wherein screw (or bolt) part (532) engages and is securable to receiving thread part (524); wherein screw (or bolt) part (537) engages and is securable to receiving thread part (522); wherein screw (or bolt) part (533) engages and is securable to receiving thread part (535); wherein screw (or bolt) part (544) engages and is securable to receiving thread part (528); wherein screw (or bolt) part (549) engages and is securable to receiving thread part (526); and wherein screw (or bolt) part (542) engages and is securable to receiving thread part (547). In each instance, the screw part is turned by a screw head (not shown) on the outer edge of the second platform so that it engages each respective thread part.
Preferably, when the screw head is fully engaged it does not sit proud of the outer edge of the second platform. Preferably, the screw head when fully engaged is recessed in the edge of the second platform. Together, the second platform (503, 504) and the first surfboard (502) define the second surfboard (not shown in Figures 7 and 8). The first surfboard (502) has a front side (or upper side) (701) and a reverse side (or back side or underside) (not shown). The board (502) comprises a nose (705). The board (502) comprises a tail (710). The front side (701) has a deck (715). The surfboard (502) has rails (720) that house the interlocking members (526, 528, 522, 524) that receive the respective locking members of the second platform. The surfboard (502) has a stringer (725). The nose (705) has a pointed profile. The tail (710) is partly square. The rocker from above the mid-section is sloping upwards towards the nose (705). In the portion at or near to the tail (710) on the reverse side are three fin boxes (not shown) into which three fins can be mounted in a thruster arrangement (not shown). The surfboard (502) has a securement point (730) to which is attachable a leash (not shown). The second platform (503, 504) has four components (530, 535, 540, 545) each of which has a front side (or upper side) and a reverse side (or back side or underside) (not shown).
The portions (540, 545) when secured by means of interlocking arrangements (542, 547) and interlocking arrangements (544 and 528; and 549 and 526) provide the nose of the second surfboard (740 in Figure 5). The portions (530 and 535) when secured by means of interlocking arrangements (533 and 538) and interlocking arrangements (532 and 524; and 537 and 522) provide the tail of the second surfboard (745 in Figure 5). When components (540 and 545; and 530 and 535) are secured, their front side (750 in Figure 5) provide a deck (755 in Figure 5) that interacts with deck (715) of the first surfboard to define a larger deck surface. Each of the components of the second platform (540 and 545; and 530 and 535) has a rail.
The nose (740) has an elongated circular profile of a long board. The tail (745) is ovoid. Like the first surfboard (502), the rocker of the components (540 and 545; and 530 and 535) when secured and from above the mid-section is sloping upwards towards the nose (740). The rocker shape profile of the first surfboard and the second platform are matched. In the portion at or near to the tail (745) on the reverse side are three fin boxes (not shown) into which three fins can be mounted in a thruster arrangement (not shown). One component (530) of the second platform has a securement point (735) to which is attachable a leash (not shown). Additional attachment means may be provided -such as to the upper surfaces of the first surfboard and the second platform (such as releasable bindings) (not shown). The assembly of the present invention as shown in Figures 5, 7 and 8 thus provides to the user the combination of a short surfboard arid a long surfboard. In addition, the user is able to experiment with different profiles for at least one or more of the components (i.e. 530 and/or 535 and/or 540 and/or 545). For example, the user may even be able to devise asymmetric profiles wherein for example the overall shape of component (530) is different to component (535). In addition, the user need not use components (540 and 545) in addition to components (530 and 535) and vice versa.
Thus, with the arrangement shown in Figures 5, 7 and 8, the user can have up to at least four different surfboard profiles.
As indicated above, Figure 9 is a schematic diagram of the component parts of one aspect of the present invention that can form the assembly of the present invention.
In Figure 9: the surfboard assembly (901) comprises a second platform (910) and a first surfboard (905). The second platform (910) is releasably mounted and releasably secured to the first surfboard (905). The second platform (910) is releasably mountable and releasably securable to the first surfboard (905) by means of a screw (or bolt) and receiving thread locking mechanism (generically shown as 913, 915 and 920). A screw (or bolt) (913) engages receiving threads (915 in the second platform and 920 in the first surfboard). When the screw (913) has fully engaged the threads (915 and 920) the second platform is securely mounted to the first surfboard. In some instances, the tail (925) of the first surfboard has additional locking means (not shown) to secure even more tightly the second platform. This may be by means of a groove and tongue arrangement (not shown) between part of the rails (930) of the tail (925) of the first surfboard and the inner edge (935) of the second platform. Preferably, when the head of the screw (913) is fully engaged it does not sit proud of the outer edge of the second platform. Preferably, the screw head when fully engaged is recessed in the edge of the second platform. Together, the second platform (910) and the first surfboard (905) define the second surfboard (940). The first surfboard (905) has a front side (or upper side) (945) and a reverse side (or back side or underside) (not shown). The board (905) comprises a nose (950). The board (502) comprises a tail (925). The front side (945) has a deck (955). The surfboard (905) has rails (930) that may have additional interlocking members (not shown) that receive the respective locking members of the second platform (not shown) -such as a tongue and groove arrangement (not shown) andlor additional interlockable screw and thread arrangements (not shown). The surfboard (905) has a stringer (960). The rocker of the first surfboard (905) from above the mid-section is sloping upwards towards the nose (950). In the portion at or near to the tail (925) on the reverse side are three fin boxes (not shown) into which three fins can be mounted in a thruster arrangement (not shown). The surfboard (905) has a securement point (965) to which is attachable a leash (not shown). The second platform (910) -unlike the arrangement shown in Figure 7) is a single integral component that has a front side (or upper side) (970) and a reverse side (or back side or underside) (not shown). The second platform (910) when secured to the first surfboard (905) provides the tail (975) of the second surfboard (940) and also a larger deck. The edges of the second platform provide a rail (980).
The rocker of the second platform (910) matches that of the first surfboard (905). In the portion at or near to the tail of the second platform (910) on the reverse side are three fin boxes (not shown) into which three fins can be mounted in a thruster arrangement (not shown). The second platform has a securement point (965) to which is attachable a leash (not shown). Additional attachment means may be provided -such as to the upper surfaces of the first surfboard and the second platform (such as releasable bindings) (not shown). The assembly of the present invention as shown in Figure 9 thus provides to the user the combination of a shorter surfboard and a longer surfboard.
As indicated above, Figure 10 is a schematic diagram of the component parts of one aspect of the present invention that can form the assembly of the present invention.
In Figure 10: the surfboard assembly (1001) comprises a second platform (1010) and a first surfboard (1005). The second platform (1010) is releasably mounted and releasably secured to the first surfboard (1005). The second platform (1010) is releasably mountable and releasably securable to the first surfboard (1005) by means of a screw (or bolt) and receiving thread locking mechanism (generically shown as 1022, 1020 and 1025). A screw (or bolt) (1022) engages receiving threads (1020 in the second platform and 1025 in the first surfboard). When the screw (1022) has fully engaged the threads (1020 and 1025) the second platform is securely mounted to the first surfboard. In some instances, the nose (1030) of the first surfboard has additional locking means (not shown) to secure even more tightly the second platform. This may be by means of a groove and tongue arrangement (not shown) between part of the rails (1035) of the nose (1030) of the first surfboard and the inner edge (1040) of the second platform. Preferably, when the head of the screw (1022) is fully engaged it does not sit proud of the outer edge of the second platform. Preferably, the screw head when fully engaged is recessed in the edge of the second platform. Together, the second platform (1010) and the first surfboard (1005) define the second surfboard (1045). The first surfboard (1005) has a front side (or upper side) (1050) and a reverse side (or back side or underside) (not shown). The board (1050) comprises a nose (1030). The board (1005) comprises a tail (1055). The front side (1050) has a deck (1060). The surfboard (1005) has rails (1035) that may have additional interlocking members (not shown) that receive the respective locking members of the second platform (not shown) -such as a tongue and groove arrangement (not shown) andlor additional interlockable screw and thread arrangements (not shown). The surfboard (1005) has a stringer (1065). The rocker of the first surfboard (1005) from above the mid-section is sloping upwards towards the nose (1030). In the portion at or near to the tail (1055) on the reverse side are three fin boxes (not shown) into which three fins can be mounted in a thruster arrangement (not shown). The surfboard (1005) has a securement point (1070) to which is attachable a leash (not shown). The second platform (1010) -unlike the arrangement shown in Figure 7) is a single integral component that has a front side (or upper side) (1075) and a reverse side (or back side or underside) (not shown). The second platform (1010) when secured to the first surfboard (1005) provides the nose (1080) of the second surfboard (1045) and also a larger deck. The edges of the second platform provide a rail (1085). The rocker of the second platform (1010) matches that of the first surfboard (1005). Additional attachment means may be provided -such as to the upper surfaces of the first surfboard and the second platform (such as releasable bindings) (not shown). The assembly of the present invention as shown in Figure 10 thus provides to the user the combination of a shorter surfboard and a longer surfboard.
It is to be understood that it is possible to have a mixture of configurations -such as the tail configuration of Figures 7 and 8 with the nose configuration of Figure 10; or the nose configuration of Figures 7 and 8 with the tail configuration of Figure 9; or the tail configuration of Figure 9 and the nose configuration of Figure 10. The latter combination is schematically shown in Figure 11 as assembly (1000). Here, reference may be made to the description associated with Figures 9 and 10.
In a more complex arrangement, it is possible -for example -to use the system of Figure 4 and Figure 6 with the configurations taught in any one of Figures 5, 7, 8, 9 or 10, or combinations thereof. For example, a paddle board can be the third sport board (similar to board 410 in Figure 6) and wherein the "first" surfboard (420) of Figure 6 can be any one of the assemblies taught in Figures 5, 7, 8, 9 or 10, or combinations thereof. Thus, with this more complex arrangement, the user may have up to at least five different board profiles.
As indicated above, Figure 12 is a schematic diagram of one aspect of the present invention. Figure 12 shows an alternative arrangement to that shown in Figures 4 and 6. In this respect, in Figure 12, the assembly (2401) comprises a second platform (2410) and a first surfboard (2420). The first surfboard (2420) is releasably mounted and releasably secured within the second platform (2410) by means of a snug fit arrangement that comprises releasable locking flaps (2422 and 2424). Together, the second platform (2410) and the first surfboard (2420) define the second surfboard (2415). The first. surfboard (2420) has a front side (or upper side) (2425) and a reverse side (or back side or underside) (2427). The board (2420) comprises a nose (2435). The board (2420) comprises a tail (2440). The front side (2420) has a deck (2426). The surfboard (2420) has rails (2445) that form a snug fit that is a releasable and securable to a void (partly shown) in the second platform (2410). The surfboard (2420) has a stringer (not shown). The rocker from above the mid-section is gently sloping upwards towards the nose (2435). In the portion at or near to the tail (2440) on the reverse side are three fin boxes (one shown as 2442) into which three fins can be mounted in a thruster arrangement (not shown). The surfboard (2420) has a securement point (not shown) to which is attachable a leash (not shown). The second platform (2410) has a front side (or upper side) (2412) and a reverse side (or back side or underside) (2414). The second platform (2410) comprises a nose (2460). The second platform (2410) comprises a tail (2465). The front side (2412) has a deck (2416). The reverse side (2414) of the second platform (2410) interacts with the bottom side (2427) of the first surfboard (2420) to ensure proper flow properties of the water as the user moves on the waves. The second platform (2410) has rails (2475). The second platform (2410) has an inner void section (partly shown) into which the first surfboard (2420) can be accommodated in a snug fit that is a releasable and securable by means of flaps (2422 and 2424). The second platform (2410) has a stringer (not shown). Like the first surfboard (2420), the rocker of the second platform (2410) from above the mid-section is gently sloping upwards towards the nose (2480). The rocker shape profile of the first surfboard and the second platform are matched. In the portion at or near to the tail (2465) on the reverse side are three fin boxes (not shown) into which three fins (one shown as 2485) can be mounted in a thruster arrangement (not shown). The second platform (2410) has a securement point (not shown) to which is attachable a leash (not shown). Additional attachment means may be provided -such as to the upper surfaces of the first surfboard and the second platform (such as releasable bindings) (not shown). Instead of or in addition to flaps (2422 and 2424), the first surfboard may be securably mountable to the second platform by means of one or more other attachment means -such as by a screw (or bolt) (not shown) that travels through receptive threads in the first surfboard (not shown) and in the second platform (not shown). The assembly of the present invention as shown in Figure 12 thus provides to the user the combination of a short surfboard and a long surfboard.

Claims (37)

  1. S-I 43CLAIMS1. A multiple sport board assembly capable of defining at least two sport boards; the multiple sport board assembly comprising: (i) a first platform capable of defining a first sport board; and (ii) a second platform; wherein the first platform and the second platform are releasably mountable to each other; wherein the first platform and the second platform are releasably securable to each other when they are releasably mounted to each other; and wherein when the first platform and the second platform are releasably mounted and secured to each other they define a second sport board.
  2. 2. A multiple sport board assembly according to claim 1 wherein the second platform comprises at least one component that is releasably mountable to an edge surface of the first platform.
  3. 3. A multiple sport board assembly according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the first platform is mountable within at least a portion of the second platform.
  4. 4. A multiple sport board assembly according to any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the second platform has a space to accommodate all of the first platform.
  5. 5. A multiple sport board assembly according to claim 4 wherein the space extends from at least the reverse side of the second platform. A,
  6. 6. A multiple sport board assembly according to any one of claims 1 to 5 wherein the first platform is securable to the second platform by means of a snap-fit arrangement.
  7. 7. A multiple sport board assembly according to any one of claims I to 6 wherein the first platform is securable to the second platform by means of a snap-fit arrangement between at least a part of the edge surface of the first platform and at least an inner edge surface of the second platform.
  8. 8. A multiple sport board assembly according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the second platform comprises at least one component that is releasably mountable to the an end edge surface of the first platform.
  9. 9. A multiple sport board assembly according to claim 1 or claim 2 or claim 8 wherein the second platform comprises at least one component selected from: a component that is releasably mountable to a nose edge surface of the first platform, a component that is releasably mountable to a tail edge surface of the first platform, and the combination thereof.
  10. 10. A multiple sport board assembly according to claim 1 or claim 2 or claim 8 or claim 9 wherein the second platform is multi-component.
  11. 11. A multiple sport board assembly according to claim 1 or claim 2 or any one of claims 8 to 10 wherein the second platform comprises at least one component that is releasably mountable to a nose edge surface of the first platform, and at least one component that is releasably mountable to a tail edge surface of the first platform.
  12. 12. A multiple sport board assembly according to claim 1 or claim 2 or any one of claims 8 to 11 wherein the second platform comprises at least one component that is releasably mountable to a nose edge surface of the first platform wherein said component is a single component.
  13. 13. A multiple sport board assembly according to claim 1 or claim 2 or any one of claims 8 to 12 wherein the second platform comprises at least one component that is releasably mountable to a tail edge surface of the first platform wherein said component is a single component.
  14. 14. A multiple sport board assembly according to claim I or claim 2 or any one of claims 8 to 11 wherein the second platform comprises at least one component that is releasably mountable to a nose edge surface of the first platform wherein said component is formed from multi-component parts.
  15. 15. A multiple sport board assembly according to claim 14 wherein at least two of the multi-component parts are releasably mountable and securable to each other.
  16. 16. A multiple sport board assembly according to claim 1 or claim 2 or any one of claims 8 to 11 or claim 14 or claim 15 the second platform comprises at least one component that is releasably mountable to a tail edge surface of the first platform wherein said component is formed from multi-component parts.
  17. 17. A multiple sport board assembly according to claim 16 wherein at least two of the multi-component parts are releasably mountable and securable to each other.
  18. 18. A multiple sport board assembly according to claim 1 or claim 2 or any one of claims 8 to 17 wherein the second platform comprises at least one component according to claim 14 or claim 15, and at least one component according to claim 16 orclaiml7.
  19. 19. A multiple sport board assembly according to claim 1 or claim 2 or any one of claims 8 to 18 wherein the second platform comprises at least one component according to claim 12 or any claim dependent thereon, and at least one component according to claim 16 or any claim dependent thereon.
  20. 20. A multiple sport board assembly according to claim 1 or claim 2 or any one of claims 8 to 19 wherein the second platform comprises at least one component according to claim 13 or any claim dependent thereon, and at least one component according to claim 14 or any claim dependent thereon.
  21. 21. A multiple sport board assembly capable of defining at least two sport boards; the multiple sport board assembly comprising: (i) a first platform capable of defining a first sport board; and (ii) a second platform; wherein the first platform and the second platform are releasably mountable to each other; wherein the first platform and the second platform are releasably securable to each other when they are releasably mounted to each other; wherein when the first platform and the second platform are releasably mounted and secured to each other they define a second sport board; wherein the first platform is mountable within at least a portion of the second platform; wherein the second platform has a space to accommodate all of the first platform; and wherein the space extends from at least the reverse side of the second platform.
  22. 22. A multiple sport board assembly capable of defining at least two sport boards; the multiple sport board assembly comprising: (i) a first platform capable of defining a first sport board; and (ii) a second platform; wherein the first platform is releasably mountable and securable within the second platform are releasably mountable to each other; and wherein when the first platform and the second platform are releasably mounted and secured to each other they define a second sport board.
  23. 23. A multiple sport board assembly capable of defining at least two sport boards; the multiple sport board assembly comprising: (i) a first platform capable of defining a first sport board; and (ii) a second platform; wherein the first platform and the second platform are releasably mountable to each other; wherein the first platform and the second platform are releasably securable to each other when they are releasably mounted to each other; wherein when the first platform and the second platform are releasably mounted and secured to each other they define a second sport board; wherein the second platform comprises at least one component that is releasably mountable to the an end edge surface of the first platform; and wherein the second platform comprises at least one component selected from: a component that is releasably mountable to a nose edge surface of the first platform, a component that is releasably mountable to a tail edge surface of the first platform, and the combination thereof.
  24. 24. A multiple sport board assembly according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the reverse side of each of the first platform and the second platform is flush with each other when the first platform is mounted to the second platform.
  25. 25. A multiple sport board assembly according to anyone of the preceding claims wherein the front side of each of the first platform and the second platform is flush with each other when the first platform is mounted to the second platform.
  26. 26. A multiple sport board assembly according to anyone of the preceding claims wherein the rocker of at least a part of the second sport board matches the rocker of at least a part of the first sport board.
  27. 27. A multiple sport board assembly according to anyone of the preceding claims wherein the rocker of at least a part of the second sport board matches and extends the rocker of at least a part of the first sport board.
  28. 28. A multiple sport board assembly according to anyone of the preceding claims wherein the rail of at least a part of the second sport board matches the rail of at least a part of the first sport board.
  29. 29. A multiple sport board assembly according to anyone of the preceding claims wherein the rail of at least a part of the second sport board matches and extends the rail of at least a part of the first sport board.
  30. 30. A multiple sport board assembly according to anyone of the preceding claims wherein the rocker of at least a part of the second sport board matches the rocker of at least a part of the first sport board; and wherein the rail of at least a part of the second sport board matches the rail of at least a part of the first sport board.
  31. 31 A multiple sport board assembly according to anyone of the preceding claims wherein the rocker of at least a part of the second sport board matches and extends the rocker of at least a part of the first sport board; and wherein the rail of at least a part of the second sport board matches and extends the rail of at least a part of the first sport board.
  32. 32. A multiple sport board assembly according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the first platform and the second platform are releasably mounted to each other and are secured to each other.
  33. 33. A multiple sport board assembly according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the first sport board is for use on water.
  34. 34. A multiple sport board assembly according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the second sport board is for use on water.
  35. 35. A multiple sport board assembly according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the first sport board is a surfboard.
  36. 36. A multiple sport board assembly according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the second sport board is a surf board.
  37. 37. A multiple sport board assembly substantially as described herein and with reference to Figures 4 to 11.
