Description
Cable Reel
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to a cable reel. Particularly, but not exclusively, the invention relates to a cable reel for an electrical cable, where one or more electrical sockets are provided on the cable reel to power an electrical device located remotely from a mains power supply.
Backqound to the Invention Cable reels are commonly provided to deliver electricity from a mains power supply to a remote location. A cable reel typically comprises a cylindrical drum mounted on a frame and on which an electrical cable is wound. The free end of the cable is provided with a plug suitable for insertion into a mains power supply socket. The other end of the cable is fed into one or more sockets provided in a face plate at one end of the drum. Each socket is configured to receive a plug from a remote device and to deliver electricity to the device via the electrical cable of the cable reel. Where the cable reel is configured for use outdoors, covers with hinged lids are typically mounted on the face plate to shield the sockets from water and dirt. However, these covers are often damaged in transit or in use.
It is therefore an aim of the present invention to provide a cable reel which addresses the above problem.
*: Summary of the Invention
* 25 According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a cable reel comprising a drum having a length of cable capable of being wound thereon; the cable S., having a free end fitted with a plug for insertion into a complementary socket, the other . end of the cable being fed into at least one socket provided in a face plate at one end of the drum; the at least one socket being provided with a protective shroud and wherein the socket and the shroud are at least partly recessed within the face plate.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a face plate for a cable reel comprising at least one socket provided with a protective shroud, wherein the socket and the shroud are at least partly recessed within the face plate.
The present invention therefore provides for a cable reel in which the protective shroud protrudes to a lesser extent than normal. This not only serves to make the cable reel more compact (and therefore more conveniently stored and transported) but it also reduces the risk of damage to the protective shroud either in transit or in use.
Furthermore, the fact the socket itself is recessed reduces the risk of water, dirt or other contaminants from contacting the contacts therein which may be electrical.
Overall, the present invention provides for a more efficient use of the space inside the drum by effectively containing the sockets therein.
In a particular embodiment, the face plate, socket and shroud are made from a single piece of moulded material, such as plastic. This is advantageous since it means these elements can be formed in a single (e.g. injection moulding) process rather than individually manufactured and assembled. This leads to a more efficient and therefore more cost-effective manufacturing process and also results in a face plate without joins between these components, through which water or other contaminants can enter the cable reel and impair its performance.
The protective shroud may be constituted by a hollow tube surrounding and extending outwardly from the socket. A lid may be provided to cover the free end of the shroud when the socket is not in use. The lid may be mounted such that it is moveable from a closed to an open position in which it permits insertion of a plug into the socket. The lid may be hingedly, slidably or rotatably mounted.
In certain embodiments, 50% or more of the shroud is recessed within the face plate.
This significantly reduces the risk of damage to the shroud and/or socket. a... * . a
*a 25 In a particular embodiment, 100% of the shroud is recessed within the face plate. *..
The drum may be rotatably mounted on a stand. Alternatively, the drum may be rotatably mounted within a housing. In either case, the cable reel may be provided with a a carry handle.
*.* a.a a The cable may be electrical or optical and may be configured to carry power, television, telephone, internet or network signals.
Brief Description of the Drawings
Certain embodiments of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1A shows a perspective view of a cable reel according to a first embodiment of the present invention; Figure lB shows a perspective view of a cable reel according to a second embodiment of the present invention; Figure 2A shows a front view of the face plate employed in the cable reels in Figures 1A and 1B; Figure 2B shows a view from below of the face plate shown in Figure 2A; Figure 2C shows a view from the right-hand side of the face plate shown in Figure 2A; Figure 2D shows an exploded perspective view of the face plate shown in Figure 2A; and Figure 3 shows a perspective view of a cable reel according to a third embodiment of the present invention.
Detailed Description of Certain Embodiments
With reference to Figure 1A, there is illustrated a cable reel 10 according to a first embodiment of the present invention. The cable reel 10 comprises an electrical cable 12 wound around a hollow cylindrical drum 14. A free end 15 of the cable 12 is provided with a plug 16 for insertion into a complimentary socket (not shown) connected to a mains power supply.
At each end of the drum 14 there is provided a circularflange, denoted front flange 18A and rear flange 18B, extending radially from the drum 14 and configured to retain the cable 12 thereon. The front of the drum 14, as viewed in Figure 1A is provided with a face plate 20 disposed within the front flange 18A and aligned with the end of the drum 14. The face plate 20 is provided with two adjacent electrical sockets 22 (shown in Figure 2D) which are each surrounded by a shroud 24 extending in part outwardly of the face plate 20. Each shroud 24 is provided with a lid 26 which is attached to the top of the shroud 24 by a hinge 28. The lower portion of each lid 26 is provided with a projection 29 configured to serve as a fingerhold to open the lid 26.
S
Towards the outer edge of the front flange 18A there is provided a cylindrical knob 30 which serves as a handhold for rotating the drum 14 to thereby wind or unwind the cable 12 thereon.
At the rear of the drum 14 there is provided a plate (not shown) preventing access within the drum 14. Extending from the plate is a tubular metal stand 32 which provides a U-shaped foot 34 beneath the drum 14 and then extends upwardly from the rear of the drum 14 to terminate in a central carry handle 36 orientated parallel to the axis of the drum 14.
Although not shown, the end of the cable 12 remote from the free end 15 is fed into the centre of the drum 14 whereupon it is electrically connected to each of the sockets 22.
Figure lB shows a cable reel 40 according to a second embodiment of the present invention. The only significant difference between the cable reel 40 of Figure lB and that of cable reel 10 shown in Figure 1A is in the shape of the stand 32'. Like reference numerals will therefore be used as appropriate. As above, the stand 32' in Figure lB extends from the plate at the rear of the drum 14 and forms a U-shaped foot 34' beneath the drum 14. However, in this embodiment a further U-shaped support 42 is provided in an opposite orientation to the foot 34' and is connected to the inner sides of the foot 34' to form a rectangular base 44. At a rear corner of the base 44, the stand 32' extends vertically to almost the top of the rear flange 18B whereupon it extends forwardly and upwardly to the centre of the drum 14 until it terminates in a carry handle 36' orientated orthogonally to the axis of the drum 14.
Figures 2A, 2B, 2C and 2D show more details of the face plate 20 employed in both of the cable reels 10, 40 shown in Figures 1A and lB. It can be seen from these figures that the sockets 22 and shrouds 24 are partly recessed in the face plate 20. In fact, in this embodiment of the face plate 20, approximately 50% of each shroud 24 is recessed. It is also clear from these Figures that the face plate 20, sockets 22 and shrouds 24 are integrated into a single moulding, in this case of plastics material. * S * S
As shown in Figure 2D, a coiled spring 46 is provided around a pivot pin 48 to form the hinge 28 for each of the lids 26. The springs 46 are configured to bias the lids 26 to *. their closed positions. A number of connecting elements 50 are provided to secure the face plate 20 to the drum 14 and also to secure electrical connecting means 52 to the 30 rear of each of the sockets 22. It will be understood that the electrical connecting **. means 52 will from the interface between the end of the cable 12 which is provided within the drum 14 and each of the sockets 22.
Figure 3 shows a cable reel 60 according to a third embodiment of the present invention. The only significant difference between the cable reel 60 of Figure 3 and that of cable reels 10 and 40 shown in Figures 1A and lB is that the stands 32 and 32' have been replaced by a housing 62. Like reference numerals will therefore be used as appropriate. The housing 62 surrounds the drum 14 and incorporates the face plate at one side thereof. The housing 62 is essentially cubic with a carry handle 64 projecting from a top surface thereof. Each of the four sides of the housing 62 are provided with openings 66 to allow access to the cable 12 within. Although not shown, in use, the plug 16 at the free end of the cable 12 will be fed through one of the openings 66 to permit the desired length of cable 12 to be dispensed therethrough.
In accordance with the above, it can be seen that the present invention provides a cable reel 10, 40, 60 in which the protective shrouds 54 protrude to a lesser extent than normal -it being normal for a shroud to be mounted directly on a face plate as opposed to being mounted within it, Consequently, the present invention provides for a more compact and easier to handle cable reel which is less prone to damage.
It will be appreciated by persons skilled in the art that various modifications may be made to the above-described embodiments without departing from the scope of the present invention. For example, whilst the above discussion has been primarily concerned with electrical cable reels, the invention is equally applicable to other types of cable reels such as those carrying television, telephone, internet or network cables.
