Abstract

A bolt pre-load monitor includes an eddy current based relative displacement sensor to sense the movement of a pin 6 placed in the head of a bolt, thereby monitoring extension of the bolt shank 8 when tension is applied thereto. The eddy current sensor consists of a printed circuit board 1 on one side of which is mounted a coil 2 which faces a copper or aluminium disc 4 attached to the top of the pin. The other side of the circuit board is used to mount the electronics for the eddy current sensor. The monitor allows the quantitative measurement of pre-load applied to the bolt during installation thereof as well as allowing subsequent monitoring and/or checking of the in-service load on the bolt.

Description

Description
The present invention relates to the use of an eddy current measurement device to detect and monitor or to check the pre-load on a torqued bolt in a mechanical installation. The eddy current probe is used to sense the movement of a machined pin (6), placed in the head of the bolt. Movement of the pin indicates the bolt shank extension. The eddy current probe consists of a PCB mounted coil (2) facing a copper or aluminium disc (4) attached to the pin top. The other side of the PCB is used to mount the electronics for the eddy current probe. The device is shown in Figure 1. The pin is forced into position against the body of the bolt by a compression spring (7). Movement in the body of the bolt caused by a change in load causes the pin to move.
This causes the eddy current probe signal output to alter as the distance between the pin head and the eddy current detector changes. This signal output is detected by a measurement and data logging device and the change in frequency is related to a change in bolt load via a software algorithm.

  1. Claims 1. A low cost device to allow the quantitative measurement of the pre-load applied to a bolt during installation.
  2. 2. A low cost device that allows the subsequent monitoring and or checking the pre-load of a bolt in service.
  3. 3. A device that allows the "in service" bolt load to be monitored.
  4. 4. The use of a low cost eddy current sensor located inside of the head of the bolt to measure bolt pre-load by measuring relative displacement.
  5. 5. The use of a coil etched onto a PCB together with the electronic components for the eddy current probe.
