Abstract

An automatic detection system that ensures automatic association (1) of a restraining device and ECU (2 and 3) that can prevent poor practice when welding any Electrofusion joint of any nature by detecting the restraining/clamping device is in the correct place for correct welding, by applying a voltage (for example) (Sheet 1) or sending or receiving a signal by any means from the device to the ECU and checking the associated restraining /clamping device is in evidence (Sheet 2) and either allowing the weld to commence or disabling the possibility of welding until the device(s) are associated (4) offering correct restraining/clamping/electrofusion procedures to the work being carried out, and confidence in the welded joint, operator control and asset owner(s).

Description

PATENT APPLICATION
TITLE: Electrofusion Joint in Device Detection System (EJIDDS)
BACKGROUND:
Plastic pipes are predominately joined together by the Electrosfusion process using plastic Electrofusion fittings which can be couplers, tee pieces, tapping-tee's to give some examples (these are a few of the variants that are available and they come in many size diameters from 16mm through to 1200mm) which are charged by an Electrofusion Control Unit (ECU) with a voltage to heat the internal coil up (8V to 80V and greater in some instances) and create a weld-melt inside the fitting with the pipe(s) inserted, or placed upon, creating a welded joint. The fittings should always be clamped or held static by some form of mechanical device to ensure the fitting(s) do not move when the Electrofusion process is taking place, and afterwards when the Electrofusion welded fittings are cooling down for the prescribed time. Currently there is no way of proving that the pipes being electrofusion welded have been mechanically clamped or held in position during the process of welding or cooling, and there is evidence that a large percentage of welded joint failures are due to the failure of operators to use any of the mechanical clamping/restraining devices available in the market to restrain the pipe.
STATEMENT OF INVENTION:
To overcome the problem of poor installation techniques, and notably the lack of using any proprietary mechanical restraining devices, this invention forces the operator of the electrofusion welding process to restrain the fitting(s) before welding with a restraining device similar to those currently available in the market place (alignment clamps for example) which is electronically, either wired or wirelessly controlled and automatically detected by the ECU to be present so ensuring that the operator cannot weld any electrofusion joint/fitting unless the clamp/restraining device is in place with the fitting positioned within the restraining devices pre-set field(s) of operation. Failure to use the restraining device/clamp for example in its proper mode of operation will disable the welding operation by use of proprietary software built in to the ECU and/or other device for controlling the weld, as the weld will not start in which case the operator is then forced to use the equipment in its proper and intended fashion.
ADVANTAGES: 1: The operator of the ECU can only weld plastic pies and fittings in the correct and best practice manner. It can be possible within the invention to have the ECU not start the weld at all because the restraining device is not detected, or record by any electronic means that the correct clamping/restraining device(s) were not detected/present at the start of the Electrofusion welding process which will show on the data-log of the ECU if available as an option in the ECU. (see 3 below) 2: The contractor(s) using the equipment can show that they have equipment that enforces best practice welding techniques without the need for supervision as the invention is an automatic detection device.
3: The contractors customer/owner of the asset/pipe system can easily check that the welds carried out have been correctly positioned and restrained by accessing the data-logging software within the ECU which will show the welds carried out and whether or not the pipe and fitting was clamped/restrained by the automatic detection feature of the invention.
4: The invention and associated software are designed in such a way that it can be fitted to any size of re-rounding/restraining/clamping device or other devices that should be used to ensure Electrofusion welding of plastic pipe and fittings is carried Out in the best practicable way as laid down by the manufacturers of both to ensure safety and longevity of the assets being installed.
DRAWINGS: SHEET 1: Shows (1) Electronic Welding unit (ECU) attached by ECU device wire (6) to restraining/Clamping device with associated electronics for detection mounted on/in/around Device(S) with pipes (3) and fitting (4) restrained in the restraining/clamping device (5) SHEET 2: Shows (1) Electronic Welding unit (ECU) attached by ECU device wire (6) to restraining/Clamping device with associated electronics for detection mounted on/in/around Device(S) with pipes (3) and fitting (4) restrained in the restraining/clamping device (5)

Claims (1)

  1. CLAIMS: 1: An invention to physically (by automatic detection) and easily ensure Electrofusion plastic fittings of any type/style/size/manufacturer/colour or material(s) are correctly restrained before Electrofusion welding can commence proving competent work has been carried out to best practice procedures for clamping/restraining pipes and fittings during the Electrofusion welding process and improve weld reliability.
2: A device/invention or software control method that prevents the operator of the ECU commencing any welded joint by automatically detecting at the ECU that the intended weld is correctly restrained/clamped in an associated restraining/clamping device by electronic means, whether by wired or wireless connection.
3: A device/invention designed to fit within (or otherwise attached internally or externally) the restraining clamp/alignment and/or ECU and/or other equipment for holding an Electrofusion fitting and pipes and being part of the automatically detecting association to show that the restraining clamp/ device is present.
4: An automatic detection system that can be a wireless and/or wired or otherwise connected device and or part of such, that forms an integral part of a restraining/re-rounding/clamping/aligning/pressured by hydraulic power or otherwise power device for Electrofusion fittings of any nature, that only allows an Electrofusion joint to be carried out when the automatic detection system has verified that such is both present and in the correct orientation.
