Abstract
A handgun (i.e. pistol, revolver) has a barrel which includes an extension. The purpose of the extension is to lengthen the barrel to that similar to the length of a typical rifle in order to improve accuracy.
Description
HANDGUN EXTENSION
Background
Handgun accuracy falls way below the accuracy of a rifle. This invention partly rectifies that.
Statement
My invention is to have a metal extension of the gun banel of a pistol or a revolver, to convert it into a "rifle" in a functional sense.
DESCRIPTION
The patent I require pertains to the firearms industry. It is an accessory for a handgun.
The idea is as follows: to have a metal extension of the gun barrel of a pistol or a revolver to convert it into a rifle.
The extension would be completely seperate from the pistollrevolver. It is in the category of an "optional extra". Like for example, a customized holster, or an additional grip for the gun butt.
Q. How would it be attached, since it is a completey seperate entity? A. That's no problem. It would be attached to the handgun in exactly the same way as a silencer is attached to a handgun. As we see, the gun functions in exactly the same way with or without a silencer similarly, the revolver would function well with the metal extension piece, except that its accuracy would be enhanced by 500% as is commonly the difference between rifle and handgun accuracy.
Q. How would the gunsight on the gun work, since the sight on the revolver/pistol at the end of the handgun barrel could not function as the gunsight once the extension has been attached. The sight would then obviousy have to be at the muzzle of the extension.
A. 1 The sight on the revolver/pistol in its original state would have to be able to fold down. This can be achieved by means of a small hinge, in a similar fashion to the hinge on a cabinet door or a doorframe, except obviously much smaller.
The metal extension barrel must have a sight on it at the end. This sight would function together with the sights at the back of the gun next to the hammer.
When the shooter/gunman comes to convert his pistol into a rifle he attaches the banel extension to the pistol just like someone attaching a silencer to the same weapon.
Once he has done this he has to flip down the sight at the end of the revolver, which it now obviousy obstructing the rifle sights at the end of the extension.
2 An alternative solution is that the revolver sight operates in conjunction with the rifle sights at the end of the extension piece, but the sight at the end of the extension piece would be higher than the sight at the end of the revolver and obviously also in line with it, thereby ensuring that the obstruction (ie. the original handgun sight) would not be a problem.
Q. What are the advantages of the idea? A. The advantage of converting a handgun into a rifle (makeshift as it may be) are instantly perceived by those with any military/security/hunting knowledge.
A rifle can be accurately used against a normal target at a distance of 50 yards. Real handgun accuracy is not possible (by 99% of people) at a distance of more than 50 feet.
Really from 30 to 50 feet.
It is therefore obvious that, to any law enforcement agent (for example) the patent I have outlined can enable him to counteract threats in the realm of riot control/sniper fire/siege scenarios which he would be almost powerless to confront with only an ordinary handgun.
It also gives an edge to a private individual in a crime fighting/self defense situation.
A lot of law enforcement agencies/police forces don't issue all their agents with rifles this extension accessory could enhance their ability to function in situations such as those which I have outlined above.
Q. What would the length of the extension be? A. The length of the invention (the metal extension banel) would be the difference between the length of the revolver/pistol and the length of a rifle.
Therefore it would vary from gun to gun.
Since a.22 varies from a.45 and handguns come in various shapes and sizes, the length of the extension barrel would have to be appropriate to each individual handgun. This is fairly obvious.
Q. What would the circumference of the extension barrel be? A. The circumference of the extension banel would obviously have to be adapted to the circumference of the original handgun barrel. This is such a way as to retain accuracy and safety.
Optional Extra An additional optional extra to the patent idea is a telescopic sight (perhaps fitted by means of an elliptical clamp).
The purpose being not to turn it into a sniper rifle, but to further enhance its accuracy.
