Abstract

A knife sharpener which comprises a handle 30, a support rod 31 mounted on an end of the handle 30, a hollow sharpening bar 33 mounted around the support rod 31, a flexible sleeve 33 pressing on the internal wall of the bar 33 and located between the rod 31 and the bar 33, and a mounting cover 36 which screws onto an end of the rod 31, thereby retaining the bar 33 on the rod 31. Figure 2 shows a sharpener where an end 331 of the sharpening bar 33 has a reduced diameter relative to the rest of the bar, with the mounting cover 36 having an annular flange fitting onto this reduced diameter portion. Two annular pads 34 are sequentially located on this end face of the bar 331 each with a flange projecting into the hollow bar 33. A washer 35 is located between the handle 30 and the other end of the bar 31. Figure 10 shows a sharpener with a planar washer 350 located between the bar 33 and the mounting cover 36.

Description

* * CERAMIC KNIFE SHARPENER The present invention relates to a knife sharpener and, more particularly, to a ceramic knife sharpener.
A conventional knife sharpener 1 in accordance with the prior art shown in Fig. 13 comprises a handle 11 and a sharpening bar 12 mounted on the handle 11. The sharpening bar 12 is made of stainless steel to abrade and sharpen a knife. However, the sharpening bar 12 has a hardness similar to that of the knife so that the sharpening bar 12 is easily blunted or worn out during a long-term utilization.
Another conventional knife sharpener 2 in accordance with the prior art shown in Fig. 14 comprises a handle 21 and a sharpening bar 22 mounted on the handle 21. The sharpening bar 22 is made of ceramic material to abrade and sharpen a knife. Thus, the sharpening bar 22 made of ceramic material has a hardness greater than that of the knife so that the sharpening bar 22 is not blunted or worn out during a long-term utilization. However, the sharpening bar 22 made of ceramic material has a smaller strength so that the sharpening bar 22 is brittle and is easily broken when the sharpening bar 22 falls onto the ground or is hit by a foreign object, thereby decreasing the lifetime of the sharpening bar 22.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a knife sharpener, comprising a handle, a support rod mounted on a top of the handle, a hollow ceramic sharpening bar mounted on the support rod and having an * inner wall provided with a through hole for mounting the support rod, a flexible sleeve mounted between the support rod and the ceramic sharpening bar and pressing a peripheral wall of the through hole of the ceramic sharpening bar, and a mounting cover mounted between the support rod and the ceramic sharpening bar to combine the support rod and the ceramic sharpening bar together.
The knife sharpener further comprises a buffering unit mounted between an upper end of the support rod and the ceramic sharpening bar and inserted into a top of the through hole of the ceramic sharpening bar.
The buffering unit is receive in the mounting cover and located between the mounting cover and an upper end of the ceramic sharpening bar.
The buffering unit includes a first pad inserted into the top of the through hole of the ceramic sharpening bar and a second pad mounted on the upper end of the support rod and inserted into the first pad.
The knife sharpener further comprises a washer mounted on the support rod and located between the top of the handle and a lower end of the ceramic sharpening bar.
The ceramic sharpening bar has an upper end provided with a reduced protruding ring. The mounting cover has a bottom provided with a stepped abutting flange abutting and flush with the protruding ring of the ceramic sharpening bar.
The knife sharpener further comprises a secondary washer mounted on the support rod and located between the mounting cover and an upper end of the ceramic sharpening bar.
The primary objective of the present invention is to provide a knife sharpener, wherein when the knife sharpener falls onto the ground or is hit by a foreign object, the external force is transmitted through and absorbed by the flexible sleeve, the buffering unit and the washer so that the flexible sleeve, the buffering unit and the washer provide a shock-absorbing function to the ceramic sharpening bar to largely reduce the external force applied to the ceramic sharpening bar so as to prevent the ceramic sharpening bar from being broken due to an excessive force and to enhance the lifetime of the ceramic sharpening bar.
Another objective of the present invention is to provide a knife sharpener, wherein when the ceramic sharpening bar is mounted on the support rod, the flexible sleeve tightly presses the peripheral wall of the through hole of the ceramic sharpening bar to provide a greater shock-absorbing function to the ceramic sharpening bar and to largely reduce the external force applied to the ceramic sharpening bar so as to prevent the ceramic sharpening bar from being broken due to an excessive force.
A further objective of the present invention is to provide a knife sharpener, wherein when the knife sharpener falls onto the ground, the impact is buffered and absorbed by the flexible sleeve, the buffering unit and the washer so that the impact will not be directly transmitted to the ceramic sharpening bar so as to prevent the ceramic sharpening bar from being broken due to the impact.
Further benefits and advantages of the present invention will become apparent after a careful reading of the detailed description with appropriate reference to the accompanying drawings.

Referring to the drawings and initially to Figs. 1-5, a knife sharpener in accordance with the preferred embodiment of the present invention comprises a handle 30, a support rod 31 mounted on a top of the handle 30, a hollow ceramic sharpening bar 33 mounted on the support rod 31 and having an inner wall provided with a through hole 331 for mounting the support rod 31, a flexible sleeve 32 mounted between the support rod 31 and the ceramic sharpening bar 33 and pressing a peripheral wall of the through hole 331 of the ceramic sharpening bar 33, and a mounting cover 36 mounted between the * support rod 31 and the ceramic sharpening bar 33 to combine the support rod 31 and the ceramic sharpening bar 33 together. The knife sharpener further comprises a washer 35 mounted on the support rod 31 and located between the top of the handle 30 and a lower end of the ceramic sharpening bar 33.
The top of the handle 30 is provided with a screw bore 302. The support rod 31 has a lower end provided with a threaded portion 312 screwed into the screw bore 302 of the handle 30. The upper end of the support rod 31 is provided with an outer thread 311. The outer thread 311 of the support rod 31 protrudes outwardly from the through hole 331 of the ceramic sharpening bar 33.
The mounting cover 36 is secured on the upper end of the support rod 31 and abuts an upper end of the ceramic sharpening bar 33. The mounting cover 36 has an inner portion provided with an inner thread 361 screwed onto the outer thread 311 of the support rod 31 to fix the mounting cover 36 onto the supportrod3l.
The knife sharpener further comprises a buffering unit 34 mounted between an upper end of the support rod 31 and the ceramic sharpening bar 33 and inserted into a top of the through hole 331 of the ceramic sharpening bar 33.
The buffering unit 34 is receive in the mounting cover 36 and located between the mounting cover 36 and the upper end of the ceramic sharpening bar 33. The buffering unit 34 includes a first pad 342 inserted into the top of the through hole 331 of the ceramic sharpening bar 33 and having a top provided with a * first enlarged head 3421 protruding outwardly from the through hole 331 of the ceramic sharpening bar 33 and abutting the upper end of the ceramic sharpening bar 33, and a second pad 341 inserted into the first pad 342 and having a top provided with a second enlarged head 3411 protruding outwardly from the first pad 342 and abutting the first enlarged head 3421 of the first pad 342. The first pad 342 of the buffering unit 34 has an inner portion provided with a mounting hole 3422 for mounting the second pad 341. The second pad 341 of the buffering unit 34 has an inner portion provided with a through bore 3412 to allow passage of the outer thread 311 of the support rod 31.
In assembly, the washer 35 is mounted on the support rod 31, and the support rod 31 is mounted on the top of the handle 30. Then, the flexible sleeve 32 is mounted on the support rod 31. Then, the ceramic sharpening bar 33 is mounted on the support rod 31 and the flexible sleeve 32, with the outer thread 311 of the support rod 31 protruding outwardly from the through hole 331 of the ceramic sharpening bar 33. At this time, the flexible sleeve 32 presses the peripheral wall of the through hole 331 of the ceramic sharpening bar 33. Then, the buffering unit 34 is mounted between the upper end of the support rod 31 and the ceramic sharpening bar 33 and is inserted into the top of the through hole 331 of the ceramic sharpening bar 33. Finally, the inner thread 361 of the mounting cover 36 is screwed onto the outer thread 311 of the support rod 31 so that the mounting cover 36 is secured on the upper end of the support rod 31 and abuts the upper end of the ceramic sharpening bar 33 to combine the * ceramic sharpening bar 33 and the support rod 31 closely and combine the ceramic sharpening bar 33 and the mounting cover 36 integrally.
When the knife sharpener falls onto the ground or is hit by a foreign object, an external force (or impact) is applied through the handle 30 or the mounting cover 36 to the ceramic sharpening bar 33 which is located between the handle 30 and the mounting cover 36. At this time, the external force is transmitted through and absorbed by the flexible sleeve 32, the buffering unit 34 and the washer 35 so that the flexible sleeve 32, the buffering unit 34 and the washer 35 provide a shock-absorbing function to the ceramic sharpening bar 33 to largely reduce the external force applied to the ceramic sharpening bar 33 so as to prevent the ceramic sharpening bar 33 from being broken due to an excessive force.
It is appreciated that flexible sleeve 32 is a hollow tube which is closely mounted on the support rod 31 or directly combined with the support rod 31 integrally, so that when the ceramic sharpening bar 33 is mounted on the support rod 31, the flexible sleeve 32 tightly presses the peripheral wall of the through hole 331 of the ceramic sharpening bar 33 to provide a greater shock-absorbing function to the ceramic sharpening bar 33 and to largely reduce the external force applied to the ceramic sharpening bar 33 so as to prevent the ceramic sharpening bar 33 from being broken due to an excessive force.
Referring to Figs. 6-8, the upper end of the ceramic sharpening bar 33 is provided with a reduced protruding ring 330, and the mounting cover 36 has a bottom provided with a stepped abutting flange 360 abutting and flush with the protruding ring 330 of the ceramic sharpening bar 33. Thus, the buffering unit 34 is undefined. In such a manner, the external force is transmitted through and absorbed by the flexible sleeve 32 and the washer 35 so that the flexible sleeve 32 and the washer 35 provide a shock-absorbing function to the ceramic sharpening bar 33 to largely reduce the external force applied to the ceramic sharpening bar 33 so as to prevent the ceramic sharpening bar 33 from being broken due to an excessive force.
Referring to Figs. 9 and 10, the knife sharpener further comprises a secondary washer 350 mounted on the support rod 31 and located between the mounting cover 36 and the upper end of the ceramic sharpening bar 33 to prevent deflection or deviation of the mounting cover 36.
Referring to Fig. 11, the knife sharpener further comprises an indication ring 37 mounted on the lower end of the ceramic sharpening bar 33 and located above the top of the handle 30 to indicate the specification, content or type of the knife sharpener.
Referring to Figs. 2 and 12, when the knife sharpener falls onto the ground in a horizontal manner, the impact is buffered and absorbed by the flexible sleeve 32, the buffering unit 34 and the washer 35 so that the impact will not be directly transmitted to the ceramic sharpening bar 33 so as to prevent the ceramic sharpening bar 33 from being broken due to the impact.
Accordingly, when the knife sharpener falls onto the ground or is hit by a foreign object, the external force is transmitted through and absorbed by the flexible sleeve 32, the buffering unit 34 and the washer 35 so that the flexible sleeve 32, the buffering unit 34 and the washer 35 provide a shock-absorbing function to the ceramic sharpening bar 33 to largely reduce the external force applied to the ceramic sharpening bar 33 so as to prevent the ceramic sharpening bar 33 from being broken due to an excessive force and to enhance the lifetime of the ceramic sharpening bar 33. In addition, when the ceramic sharpening bar 33 is mounted on the support rod 31, the flexible sleeve 32 tightly presses the peripheral wall of the through hole 331 of the ceramic sharpening bar 33 to provide a greater shock-absorbing function to the ceramic sharpening bar 33 and to largely reduce the external force applied to the ceramic sharpening bar 33 so as to prevent the ceramic sharpening bar 33 from being broken due to an excessive force. Further, when the knife sharpener falls onto the ground, the impact is buffered and absorbed by the flexible sleeve 32, the buffering unit 34 and the washer 35 so that the impact will not be directly transmitted to the ceramic sharpening bar 33 so as to prevent the ceramic sharpening bar 33 from being broken due to the impact.
Although the invention has been explained in relation to its preferred embodiment(s) as mentioned above, it is to be understood that many other I0 * possible modifications and variations can be made without departing from the scope of the present invention. It is, therefore, contemplated that the appended claim or claims will cover such modifications and variations that fall within the true scope of the invention.

Claims (7)

  1. * CLAIMS 1. A knife sharpener, comprising: a handle; a support rod mounted on a top of the handle; a hollow ceramic sharpening bar mounted on the support rod and having an inner wall provided with a through hole for mounting the support rod; a flexible sleeve mounted between the support rod and the ceramic sharpening bar and pressing a peripheral wall of the through hole of the ceramic sharpening bar; a mounting cover mounted between the support rod and the ceramic sharpening bar to combine the support rod and the ceramic sharpening bar together.
  2. 2. The knife sharpener of claim 1, further comprising: a buffering unit mounted between an upper end of the support rod and the ceramic sharpening bar and inserted into a top of the through hole of the ceramic sharpening bar.
  3. 3. The knife sharpener of claim 2, wherein the buffering unit is receive in the mounting cover and located between the mounting cover and an upper end of the ceramic sharpening bar; the buffering unit includes: a first pad inserted into the top of the through hole of the ceramic sharpening bar; a second pad mounted on the upper end of the support rod and inserted into the first pad.
  4. 4. The knife sharpener of claim 1, further comprising: a washer mounted on the support rod and located between the top of the handle and a lower end of the ceramic sharpening bar.
  5. 5. The knife sharpener of claim 1, wherein the ceramic sharpening bar has an upper end provided with a reduced protruding ring; the mounting cover has a bottom provided with a stepped abutting flange abutting and flush with the protruding ring of the ceramic sharpening bar.
  6. 6. The knife sharpener of claim 4, further comprising: a secondary washer mounted on the support rod and located between the mounting cover and an upper end of the ceramic sharpening bar.
  7. 7. A knife sharpener substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in Figures 1 to 12 of the accompanying drawings.
