Abstract
A covering for comestibles is proposed in which the covering is in the form of a laminated structure comprises a layer of cling-film material and a layer of a metallic foil material, with the metallic foil layer having a plurality of apertures therein. This enables the covering to be seen through. The covering combines the advantages of cling film i.e. the ability to stick to container and/or to itself and to provide an air seal and of metallic foil i.e. the ability to hold its shape when handled. If a second layer of cling-film material is added to sandwich the metallic foil layer, the covering can be used in microwave ovens.
Description
Improvements in coverin_gs for comestibles This invention relates to coverings for comestibles.
One of the products that is commonly used for covering comestibles is a material known as "cling-film". As anyone who has used it will know, however, cling-film is awkward to use. Another commonly used product for covering comestibles is a metallic foil material known as "tin foil" or, more likely these days, "aluminium foil". This is easier to use than cling film. However, it does not have the same sealing qualities.
The present invention proposes a covering for comestibles, wherein the covering is in the form of a laminated structure comprising a layer of cling-film material and a layer of a metallic foil material, with the metallic foil layer having a plurality of apertures therein to enable the covering to be seen through.
The covering proposed herein combines the advantages of both its consituent materials: in the case of cling-film, this is its ability to stick to a container and/or to itself and to provide an air seal, and in the case of metallic foil, this is its greater propensity to hold its shape when being handled. For those materials to which cling-film tends not to adhere so well, such as wooden or some plastics containers, the covering proposed herein provides an effective and useful alternative. The additional provision of apertures in the metallic foil layer mean that comestibles underneath the covering can be seen without the covering having to be removed or disturbed. The apertures also enable the covering to be used in microwave ovens, as will be described in more detail below.
The apertures in the metallic foil layer may conveniently be formed as cut-outs. These may be of any shape, such as regular geometric shapes, e.g. round, square, diamond-shaped, hexagonal etc. Alternatively, or additionally, the cut-outs may be of other, irregular shapes, such as outlines of images of food products or possibly even of company logos. The cut-outs may be arranged randomly over the foil layer or they may be arranged in a regular pattern. The foil layer may have printing, embossing and/or other embellishments on its surface.
In an alternative form, the covering may comprise a second layer of cling-film material in addition to the first, with the two cling-film layers sanidwiching the metallic foil layer between them. This has the advantage of enabling the covering to be used in microwave ovens.
Metallic foil is not normally suitable for use in microwave ovens, because metal forms a barrier to microwave radiation and will therefore tend to act as a shield and hence hamper the heating process. With this form of covering, however, the provision of apertures in the metallic foil layer enables this problem to be overcome. The size of the apertures is chosen to be compatible with the wavelength of the radiation that is normally to be found in microwave ovens, in order to allow the radiation to pass through the covering, at least in part.
The presence of metallic foil in microwave ovens can be dangerous, because the radiation produced by these ovens has the effect of inducing currents in metallic objects. In thin metallic foils in air, such induced currents can cause electric arcing to occur, visible as sparks, and can lead to the foil exploding. This problem is overcome in this form of covering, because the sandwiching of the metallic foil layer between the two cling-film layers effectively seals it off from the air. It will be appreciated that the same effect might be achieved instead by the use of a single cling-film layer arranged on one side of the metallic foil layer, and a suitable surface coating on the other side of the metallic foil layer.
This form of covering is particularly useful in a kitchen environment, because it can be used universally. It can be used to cover food for storage in a fridge, for example, as well as to cover food for cooking in a microwave oven. In particular, it enables food to be taken out of a fridge and placed directly into a microwave oven for cooking, without any need for removing or replacing the covering. An additional advantage of the covering is its heat retaining quality, due to the metallic foil layer, which enables heated food to hold its temperature for longer periods.
These forms of covering may be provided in a continuous length of material on a roll, from which individual pieces can be torn off for use.
The material may include suitable perforations to assist this process.
The various layers of the covering may be bonded together to prevent de-lamination.
The form of covering with the metallic layer sealed off from the air is also suitable for use in the packaging of food products. The covering could be used as the lid portion of a ready-to-cook packaged meal, for example, as it allows the package to be placed straight into a microwave oven.
