A support bracket comprises a central web 24, walls 26 extending from each longitudinal side thereof, each wall having a flange 28 which extends from the free longitudinal edge of the wall, mounting means 32 by which the bracket may be mounted to a support at one longitudinal end of the bracket and means 38 adjacent the opposite end of the bracket for engaging a support bar 22. The mounting means preferably extend in opposite directions away from the central web. Means for engaging the support bar preferably comprise slots formed in the flanges, the inner ends of which extend towards the adjacent end of the bracket to form notches (40, fig 3). The support bar is preferably channel shaped with inwardly extending flanges 46, 48 which preferably slidingly engage the slots and notches in the support bracket. In use the web of the bracket extends transversely across the bar, preventing twisting & rotation.

Description

Cladding Support Bracket The present invention relates to cladding systems, for example roof or wall cladding systems, including support bars which are mounted by brackets to a support structure, cladding panels being secured to the support bars by means of further brackets.
In twin skin metal roof assemblies such as the Ashgrid system, it is known to mount a roofing bar on a rafter using a support bracket. Such a prior art support bracket, indicated generally at 10 in Figure 1, is formed from a single piece of bent galvanised steel sheet and comprises a generally flat body portion 12, and a mounting portion 14 which extends from a first end 1 2a of the body portion 12 generally perpendicular thereto. The mounting portion 14 is provided with a plurality of apertures through which fasteners such as screws or bolts may pass in order to fasten the mounting portion 14 onto a rafter. A second end 12b of the body portion 12 is provided with cut-outs which permit it to engage with a corresponding roofing bar 16. As can be seen in Figure 1, this support bracket 10 engages with the roofing bar 16 such that the join between the body portion 12 and the mounting portion 14 extends generally perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the roofing bar 16.
If significant vertical load is placed on a such a roof assembly, the prior art support bracket 10 fails by the bending of the second end 1 2b of the body portion 12 and bending at the interface between the mounting portion 14 and body portion 12.
Moreover, it has been found that if significant sideways force is applied to the roofing bar 16 along the longitudinal axis of the bar 16, the roofing bar 16 tends to exhibit * 25 significant sideways movement (or sway) relative to the rafter on which it is * .... supported. To combat this sideways movement, it is known to provide "sway * brackets" in addition to the main support brackets 10. These sway brackets 18 are S.....
illustrated in Figure 2 and are also made from galvanised steel sheet, but are screwed S..
to both the roofing bar 16 and the rafter. The sway brackets 18 are arranged with the plane of the sheet extending generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the roofing 5: . bar 16, so as to significantly reduce such sideways movement of the roofing bar 16.
It will be appreciated that the need to provide two sorts of brackets in order to obtain a stable roofing system significantly complicates the manufacture and assembly of a roofing system.
It has been proposed to form the bracket 10 of channel section, in order to significantly improve the strength of the bracket with respect to both axial arid sideways loads and avoid the need for "sway brackets".
According to one aspect of the invention, a support bracket comprises a central transverse web portion, a pair of wall formations extending axially one from each of the longitudinal edges of the web portion, one wall formation extending to one side of the web formation and the other wall formation extending to the other side of the web formation, each wall formation having a flange formation extending outwardly from the longitudinal edge of the wall formation remote from the web formation, mounting means by which the bracket may be mounted to a support structure being provided at one longitudinal end of the bracket and means being provided adjacent the opposite longitudinal end of the bracket for slidingly engaging an elongate support bar.
In the above definition of the invention, the terms "transverse" and "axially" define the orientation of the components of the bracket, relative to a support bar to be supported by the bracket. With the support bracket of the present invention, using the same amount of material, the extent of the bracket axially of the support bar is substantially twice that of the channel shaped brackets proposed hitherto. The strength of the bracket axially of the support bar, that is with respect to sideways * ..S loads, will consequently be substantially increased. * 0
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the mounting means is formed S.....
by extensions of the outwardly extending flange formations, the extensions being S..
bent, generally perpendicular to the plane of the flange formations, to provide axially S... . . 1.: 30 extending mounting formations, which may be secured to a support structure, for example by means of suitable fastening means which engage through apertures provided in the mounting formations. The mounting formations on the two flange formations preferably extend axially, in opposite directions, away from the plane of the web portion.
The means for slidingly engaging the support bar may preferably comprise slots formed in the flange formations, which engage corresponding longitudinally extending formations on the support bar.
The invention is now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which, FIGURE 1 is an illustration of a prior art roof support bracket and roofing bar assembly; FIGURE 2 is an illustration of a prior art "sway bracket" and roofing bar assembly; FIGURE 3 is a perspective view of a support bracket according to the present invention; FIGURE 4 is plan view from above, of the support bracket shown in Figure 3; FIGURE 5 is an end elevation of the support bracket shown in Figure 3, in engagement with a roofing support bar; and FIGURE 6 is perspective view, from below, of the support bracket and roofing *..* support bar assembly shown in Figure 5. * *
* : * Figures 3 to 6 illustrate a support bracket 20 for a roofing support bar 22. The support * bracket 20 is formed from a single piece of sheet material, for example stainless or *** galvanised steel. The bracket 20 has a central web portion 24 which in use will be orientated transverse to the support bar 22. Wall formations 26 extend axially relative to the support bar 22, from each of the longitudinal edges of the web portion 24, one wall formation 26 extending to one side of the web portion 24 and the other wall formation 26 extending to the other side of the web portion 24.
Flange formations 28 extend outwardly from the longitudinal edges of the wall formations 26 remote from the web portion 24. Semicircular seams are formed between the wall formations 26 and flange formations 28, in order to provide longitudinally extending reinforcing ribs 30, which will strengthen the bracket both with respect to axial and sideways loads.
At the lower end of the bracket 20, the flange formations 28 extend beyond the lower edge of the web portion 24. The extended portions of the flange formations 28 are bent generally perpendicularly to the flange formations 28, axially of the support bar 22, away from the web portion 24, to form mounting formations 32. The mounting formations 32 are provided with apertures 34 through which suitable fastening means, for example screws, rivets or bolts, may be located to secure the support bracket 20 to a suitable support structure. Lip formations 36 may be provided on the inner edges of the mounting formations 32 to assist alignment of the support bracket 20 with the support structure.
Adjacent the upper end of the support bracket 20, slots 38 are provided in the flange formations 28. The slots 38 open to the free longitudinal edge of the flange formations 28 and extend laterally to adjacent the seam between the flange formation 28 and wall formation 26. The inner ends of the slots 38 are extended upwardly to define a notch 40.
As illustrated in figures 5 and 6, the roof support bar 22 is of channel section having a base 42 and side walls 44 extending to one side of the base 42. Flange formations 46 * extend inwardly from the free edges of the side walls 44, a lip formation 48 extending towards the base 42 along the inner edges of the flange formations 46.
S..... * S
* The roofing bar 22 is mounted on the upper end of support brackets 20, the upper end :r 30 of the support bracket 20 extending between the walls 44 of the channel section bar 22. The flange/lip formations 46,48 engaging the slots 38, to slidingly locate the roofing bar 22 on the support bracket 20. The lip formations 48 of the support bar 22 engage in notches 40 to allow limited twisting of the support bracket 20 relative to the support bar 22, while preventing disengagement of the bracket 20 from the support bar 22 by twisting.
The separation between the inner ends of the slots 38 is an interference fit between the inner faces if the lip formations 48. The support bracket 20 may consequently be engaged with the flange/lip formations 46, 48, at the end of the support bar 22 and with the support bracket 20 twisted slightly, so that the inner ends if the slots 38 are clear of the inner faces of lip formations 48, the bracket 20 may be slid along the support bar 22 to the desired axial location. The support bracket 20 may then be twisted so that the web portion is disposed at right angles to the support bar 22, so that the inner ends of slots 38, engage the inner faces of lip formations 48, to clamp the support bracket bracket 20 in position.
According to an alternative embodiment of the invention, the lip formations 48 on the support bar 22 and/or the notches 40 in slots 38 may be dispensed with, so that the support bracket 20 may be engaged with the support bar 22 by twisting.
While the invention has been described with reference to a roof support system, it is also applicable to any cladding support system, for example support systems for wall cladding. * * ***S
