Abstract

The invention comprises the addition of internet radio functionality to portable navigation devices, such as those manufactured by TomTom(RTM). The internet radioen enabled device allows selection of a radio station, and streaming of audio content from the internet for playback through an internal speaker in the portable navigation device. An on-screen menu may be provided to enable the user to select the relevant listening options. Local traffic, news, weather information, and other radio programming may be provided during a user's journey whereby the portable navigation device may determine its own position via GPS.

Description

PATENT DESCRIPTION -Internet Radio enabled PND
The invention comprises the addition of Internet Radio functionality to Portable Navigation Devices such as those manufactured by TomTom (herein generically referred to as "PND") that are able to connect to the internet (herein referred to as "connected").
The invention in enables a connected PND to stream audio content from the internet for playback either through an internal loudspeaker built in to the PND itself, through a 3.5mm audio jack socket on the PND itself, or for output to another audio playback device (e.g. a built-in car stereo I entertainment system) The invention adds relevant audio codecs such as AAC, WMA, MP3, and a software internet audio player to the PND. An on-screen menu is added is to enable the user to select the relevant listening options.
The invention adds the following functionality to the connected PND: Local Traffic, News, Weather information and other radio programming -during the users journey the PND (already knowing it's own position via GPS) automatically searches the available internet radio stations for those broadcasting traffic, news or weather information which are within a user defined radius of the PND. News, Traffic and Weather programming can be selected to interrupt the current listening option, or alternatively the PND can be set to automatically change radio station when a new local station comes within range (during a journey).
* Traffic, News, Weather information and other radio programming relevant to the destination -knowing the destination of the users journey (as entered into the PND by the user when planning to navigate to the destination), the invention enables the PND to provide the user with radio programming relevant to their destination.
* Traffic, News and Weather updates and other radio programming relevant to the users home / other pre-selected and stored addresses.
* Streaming of other audio content to the user for information / education / entertainment purposes -access to other on-demand audio content such as podcasts, audio books and MP3 music archives from or via the connected PND.
* Streaming of internet radio stations of the users choice from anywhere * in the world to / via the connected PND.
* Storage of users favourite internet radio stations and other on demand audio programming for quick access via the PND. * 2
