Abstract

A wheelchair stability system is provided for maintaining safe and comfortable passage over varying terrain by automatically adjusting the centre of gravity of the wheelchair. A wheelchair comprises at least one tilt sensor that is used to detect changes in terrain to determine and control the automatic positioning of the seat to compensate for changes in slope or terrain. The wheelchair seat may be slid to a forward position when the wheelchair is travelling up a slope, and tilted back when the wheelchair is travelling down a slope. The system maximises stability and traction of the wheelchair.

Description

Patent SDecification for Wheelchair stabilisation on rough terrain.
Title: -Wheelchair Stabilisation.
Background:-
This invention relates to the need to maintain a small wheelbase for manoeuvrability which reduces the stability on all surfaces that are not smooth and level. This limits the wheelchair to pavements, surfaced tracks and roads or home use. All rough off road, beach, or forest tracks are completely out of bounds.
Statement of invention:-
To overcome this problem, the seat on the wheelchair must move as the terrain changes to keep the centre of gravity in the correct position. This provides maximum stability and traction over rough terrain and as it may be possible for the user to "get it wrong" or not be able to control the system manually, the operation must be automatic.
Advantages:-The automatic seat movement will ensure maximum wheelchair stability and traction along with greater user safety and comfort.
Detailed description:-
The wheelchair is fitted with tilt sensors on each plane that the seat will move through. These will sense the changes in the terrain over which the chassis moves. In fig,1 the chassis is level so none of the sensors are activated and the seat remains level with the ground.
In Fig.2 the ground changes to up hill as the wheelchair progresses which would normally tip the wheelchair backwards. The level sensors react to the change and the seat is moved forward to bring the centre of gravity forward increasing traction and stability. The user is tilted back into the safety of the seat and remains at the same angle as the ground.
In Fig.3 the ground goes downhill which would normally tip the wheelchair forward. The level sensors are again triggered and react to the change. The centre of gravity changes in relation to the drive wheel position maintaining a safe and comfortable descent of the slope.
