Abstract
A postural aid or back support including an extendable upright portion 1, 5 which runs along the length of the spine from the head down to the lumbar region. The upright portion is permanently secured into a core supporting belt 3 which is fastened around the waist. The belt can include a padded lumbar support to promote correct spine curve.
Description
Postural Aid This invention helps people to maintain good postural awareness, alignment and core stability.
Weak abdominal muscles and back problems in society today are usually brought on slowly by a culture of poor posture, slouching and leaning forward with the use of everyday equipment encouraging this seemingly more comfortable and relaxed position.
Within the fitness arena personal trainers currently hold a stick manually against the back of their clients to guide their posture within movement. Currently on the market supporting belts work in isolation and don't address the full length of the spinal column but concentrate on the lumbar region. This design looks at the spine as a whole to facilitate not only supporting the core waist area using the belt but also a stick attached to the belt to aid in better posture alignment and body awareness.
The proposed stick for this invention is extendable to cater for people of various heights and is permanently secured to the belt. The belt is made from fabric and is a wrap-around design to fit different body sizes fastened firstly using a fabric hook and loop fastener and then, more securely, using adjustable straps that are stitched to the belt and adjoined to a clasp at the front. At the back of the belt on the inside there is padding which sits at the lumbar spine to promote and keep the lumbar curve.
For the following paragraphs please refer to the drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a side view of a model wearing the postural aid, Figure 2 shows a back view of a model wearing the postural aid, Figure 3 shows a prospective view of the postural aid, inside lumbar padding, extendable area of the stick, straps and clasp.
In figure 1, a side view of a model wearing the core supporting belt 3 with permanently attached alignment stick 1 running the length of the spine.
In figure 2, a back view of a model wearing the belt 3 showing the area 4 where the stick 1 is permanently secured. The stick is colour coded and labelled to display and represents the different areas of the spine.
In figure 3, view of the postural aid showing the padded lumbar promoter 6 permanently attached to the inside at the back of the belt 3 to keep the lumbar curve. The stick 1 is extendable Iengthways S to accommodate people of different heights. The belt is made from fabric and of a wraparound design fastened with fabric hook and loop fastening and secured using a strap 2 stitched to each side of the belt adjoined to a clasp 7 which fastens at the front enabling the straps to be adjusted.
