Abstract

A book bag 1 comprises a folding cover 5 for receiving a book and at least on receptacle in the form of pockets 10, 15 in the folding cover 5 containing a removable stiffening element 90 for reinforcing the folding cover 5. The book bag 1 may have a book mark 35, adjustable carrying handles 50, 55, a fastener 95 and a ticket pocket 20 for train tickets or the like.

Description

BOOK BAG

[001] The present invention relates to a book bag.

[002] It is known to read books whilst travelling. However, books used in this way can be damaged, eg by repeatedly taking them in and out of a bag, and can become dirty. In addition, there is no privacy for the reader.

[003] A way of ameliorating these problems has been sought.

[004] According to the present invention there is provided a book bag comprising: (a) a folding cover for receiving a book, and (b) a receptacle in the folding cover containing a removable stiffening element for reinforcing the folding cover.

[005] In some embodiments the stiffening element is formed from cardboard or plastic. The provision of stiffening element helps the book bag keep its shape, thereby meaning that it can be used to hold a variety of differently sized books without deforming significantly.

[006] The book bag of the present invention can also be separated from the book with which it is being used so that it can be cleaned.

[007] In some embodiments, the folding cover may comprise two leaves joined by a spine. In some embodiments, one or both leaves of the folding cover may comprise a receptacle containing a removable stiffening element for reinforcing the folding cover.

[0081 In some embodiments, the removable stiffening element may comprise two leaves joined by a spine. In some embodiments, a receptacle is provided in each leaf of the folding cover such that each receptacle is capable of receiving a leaf of the removable stiffening element.

[0091 In some embodiments, the book bag may comprise a fastener for holding the two leaves of the folding cover together. This allows a user to secure the book bag in a closed position. In some embodiments, the fastener is a hook and loop connector, eg Velcro�, or a magnetic clasp.

[00151 Figures 1 and 2 depict views of the interior and exterior respectively of a book hag 1 according to one embodiment of the invention. Book bag 1 comprises folding cover 5 comprising two leaves 66,67 joined along one of each of their edges by spine 9. The folding cover 5 is made from a flexible material such as leather or a similarly flexible plastic.

[0016] In Figure 1, the interior of book bag 1 is shown with folding cover 5 opened such that the book bag 1 is configured to receive a book (not shown). Each leaf 66,67 of folding cover 5 has an inner surface comprising inner rectangular faces 7,8 respectively.

[0023] As shown in Figures 1 and 2, along the side edges 40,45 of leaves 66,67 of folding cover 5 are provided carrying handles 50,55. Although the handles 50,55 are shown as being of fixed length, handles of alternative length or of adjustable length can be provided if required.

[0024] In addition, the book bag 1 comprises a fastener. The fastener comprises tab 95 provided at side edge 40 of leaf 66 of folding cover 5 beneath handle 50. One part of a hook and loop connector eg Velcro� (not shown in Figure 2) is provided at position 96 on tab 95. The other part of the hook and loop connector is provided at position 97 (not shown in Figure 1) near the side edge 45 of outer rectangular face 70 beneath handle 55. Alternatively, two parts of a magnetic clasp can be provided at positions 96 and 97.

[0025] Typically, a book bag 1 as shown in Figures 1 and 2 would comprise leaves 66,67 of folding cover 5 each having a width of 220mm and a height of 175mm. However, other sizes of book bag 1 can be provided as required.

[0026] During use, the stiffening element 90 is inserted into the folding cover 5 of book bag 1. Rectangular leaf 91 of stiffening element 90 is inserted into opposed pocket 10 and rectangular leaf 92 of stiffening element 90 is inserted into opposed pocket 15. When the stiffening element 90 is inserted in the folding cover 5, spine 105 of stiffening element 90 is substantially coincident with spine 9 of folding cover 5.

[0027] A front cover of a book (not shown) is then inserted into opposed pocket 10 and a back cover of the book is inserted into opposed pocket 15. The spine of the book (not shown) will be substantially coincident with spine 9 of folding cover 5 and spine 105 of stiffening element 90.

[0029] Whilst the user is reading the book (not shown), the book bag 1 remains in the open position shown in Figure 1 and 2. When the user finishes reading, their page can be marked with book mark 35. The folding cover 5 can then be closed by bringing leaves 66,67 of folding cover 5 together. Tab 95 can then be folded over so that the hook and loop connectors at positions 96,97 contact each other. This can secure the leaves 66,67 of the folding cover 5 of book bag 1 in a closed position.

The user can then carry the book bag 1 using carrying handles 50,55.

Claims

CLAIMS1. A book bag comprising: (a) a folding cover for receiving a book, and (b) a receptacle in the folding cover containing a removable stiffening element for reinforcing the folding cover.
2. A book bag as claimed in claim 1, wherein the folding cover comprises two leaves joined by a spine.
3. A book bag as claimed in claim 2, wherein one or both leaves of the folding cover comprise a receptable containing a removable stiffening element for reinforcing the folding cover.
4. A book bag as claimed in claim 2 or claim 3, wherein the removable stiffening element comprises two leaves joined by a spine.
5. A book bag as claimed in claim 4, wherein a receptacle is provided in each leaf of the folding cover such that each receptacle is capable of receiving a leaf of the removable stiffening element.
6. A book bag as claimed in any one of claims 2 to 5 comprising a fastener for holding the two leaves of the folding cover together.
7. A book bag as claimed in any one of claims 2 to 6, wherein an inner surface of one or both leaves of the folding cover is provided with a pocket shaped to receive a front or back cover of a book.
8. A book bag as claimed in claim 7, wherein the pocket is the receptacle in the folding cover containing the removable stiffening element.
9. A book bag as claimed in any one of claims 2 to 8, wherein one or both leaves of the folding cover are provided with a carrying handle.
10. A book bag as claimed in claim 9, wherein the carrying handle has a length which is adjustable.
11. A book bag as claimed in any one of claims 2 to 10, wherein one of the leaves of the folding cover is provided with a pocket shaped to receive a train ticket.
12. A book bag as claimed in any one of claims 2 to 11, wherein one of the leaves of the folding cover is provided at its edge with a pen holder in the form of a tube.
13. A book bag as claimed in any one of the preceding claims comprising a book mark.
14. A book bag as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the folding cover is formed from leather or a flexible plastic.
