BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
**Is. . . io According to an aspect of the present invention, there is provided apparatus for presenting media output consisting of a plurality of data frames each having a presentation time value, said data being one of the group of audio data, video data and audio-visual data, said apparatus comprising output means, a processor and memory, wherein said processor is configured to: identify a unique data identification of said media output, identify at least one pie-determined time value for said media output, output each of said data frames at said corresponding presentation time value to said output means, obtain additional data in response to said data identification and said pre-determined time value, and output an indication of said additional data to said output means.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of presenting media output consisting of a plurality of data frames each having a presentation time value, said data being one of the group of audio data, video data and audio-visual data, comprising the steps of: identifying a unique data identification of said media output, identifying at least one pre-determined time value for said media output, presenting each of said data frames at substantially the corresponding presentation time value of said each data frame, obtaining additional data, wherein said additional data is selected in response to said data identification and said pre-determined time value, and presenting an indication of said additional data.

DESCRIPTION OF THE BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE
INVENTION
Figure 1 An example of an environment in which media output is presented is shown in Figure 1. The media output consists of a plurality of data frames and could be audio data, video data or audio-visual data. The data frames are sent to an output means allowing the media output to be presented. In this illustrated example the media output is in the form of audio-visual data, for example a movie, and is sent to output means 101, in this case a television set. The audio-visual data may be broadcast, downloaded or streamed directly to the output means or from apparatus such as a set top box 102 (digibox or satellite decoder) or a games console. Alternatively it may be read from media, such as a DVD, CD or videocassette played on apparatus such as a DVD player 103, a video recorder, a personal computer or games console.
However, it should be appreciated that in alternative embodiments of the invention media output could be audio data, video data, audio-visual data or any other form of data designed to present audio or visual data. The output means could be any appropriate apparatus, such as a mobile telephone, a personal computer, a laptop, a personal digital assistant, a handheld games console, a portable media player, a personal navigation device, a radio set or speakers.
Figure2
S
* * Figure 2 shows a media output image 201, this image consisting of a data frame, being presented on an output means, in this case television set *:*. 15 101. Image 201 is an image from within the movie referred to in Figure 1.
Image 201 is of a car chase scene and includes a sports car 202.
Figure 3 Figure 3 again shows image 201 along with an indication 301 of additional data. Indication 301 relates to sports car 202 and presents a notification of additional data, which in this example presents a link to a web * site relating to similar cars. In this example, indication 301 presents the question "Link to sports car web site?" and provides the option "Yes" to link to the web site. The indication 301 is displayed for a predetermined duration. In this example, the indication 301 provides the option "No" deactivating the indication 301.
Figure 4 Figure 4 shows a diagram illustrating the processes undertaken in order to achieve the operation described with reference to Figure 3.
Apparatus for presenting media output 401 comprises a processor, memory, local storage and an output means 402. The processor is configured to identify a unique data identification of media output 403, as is illustrated at point 404. Data identification of media output 403 allows at least one pre-determined time value to be identified for media output 403. This process is achieved using a database, such as database 405, to look up and identify at least one pre-determined time value dependent upon the unique data identification of the media output 403.
The processor is also configured to output media output 403 to output means 402. The media output 403 consists of a plurality of data frames, such S.....
* as data frame 406. Each data frame has a presentation time value allowing :. 15 each data frame to be sent to output means 402 at its corresponding presentation time value. Once at least one pre-determined time value has been identified in response to the data identification of media output 403, additional data is obtained from a database, such as database 407. An indication of the additional data is then sent to output means 402.
An example of this is process is as follows: a media output is broadcast to a set top box and presented on a television set. The set top box has a processor and local storage located within it and the processor is configured to identify a unique data identification present on media output 403 and in response identify at least one pre-determined time value of the media output.
The processor identifies at least one pre-determined time value by accessing database 405, which holds information regarding unique data ID for the media output and pre-determined time values. The pre-determined time value could for example be at 30 minutes into the media output coinciding with the appearance of a car in the media output. The processor is also configured to output each data frame of the media output to the television set. Additional data is then obtained from database 407 in response to the pre-determined time value and the data identification. Databases 405 and 407 are located within the local storage of the set top box. An example of additional data could be an advertisement for a link to a car manufacturers web site. An indication of the additional data is then sent to the television set in co-ordination with the pre-determined time value and overlaid on at least one of the data frames. The *:::* 10 apparatus also comprises a manual input means (not shown), for example a remote control for the television set, allowing an indication of additional data to S...
be displayed that requires manual input. If manual input is entered in response to the indication the processor identifies that the manual input has been S.....
* received and responds by displaying the additional information. The type of manual input means will depend upon the apparatus used and may be any form of apparatus allowing manual input to be entered.
In alternative embodiments of the present invention the apparatus 401 further comprises a network connection allowing the processor to access databases 405 and 407, when they are stored at a remote location from the apparatus. Examples of the types of network connection that could be used are an internet connection, a radio signal or a satellite connection.
In a further alternative embodiment additional data is presented after all of the data frames of the media output 403 have been presented. An indication may or may not be presented identifying that additional data will be displayed at the end of the media output presentation.
In a further alternative embodiment pre-determined time values, additional data or both are selected in response to further information, such as stored user preferences, the location of the apparatus, attributes of the apparatus or attributes of the media output. In a further alternative embodiment pre-determined time values are embedded in the media output 403 and are not stored in database 405.
In further alternative embodiments the processor described in apparatus 401 may be self contained or may be located within apparatus such as a set top box, a games console, a DVD player, a mobile telephone, a personal computer, a laptop, a personal digital assistant, a handheld games console, a portable media player, a personal navigation device or a radio set. * S S * ** * S S...
