Abstract
A furniture raiser comprises a furniture engaging member 6 that, in use, is attached to an item of furniture via, for example, screws or adhesive pad 8, and at least one detachable extension member 3,4,5 that can be added to increase the raised height of the furniture. The furniture engaging member 7 may be connected to a floor engaging member 7 which is secured to the furniture engaging member by retaining clips [20, Figure 7]. The additional extension members 3,4,5 may be stacked on top of one another and retained in place by magnets 11 acting on steel inserts 10, 14. Alternatively the extension members may be coupled via poppers [21,22, Figure 6] or a friction device.
Description
A FURT4ITURE RAISER
DESCRIPTION
The use of furniture raisers to raise the height of chairs, beds etc is well known.
Some such devices are not attached to the furniture raiser in any way, others are attached by various means.
The present invention relates to a furniture raiser that can be attached to a large foot or a flat surface.
In order that the invention may be better understood reference will be made to the following drawings where: -Fig # 1 shows the invention attached to a furniture leg.
Fig # 2 shows the same view of the invention but with the extension parts shown in exploded positions.
Fig # 3 shows an exploded view of the leg engaging assembly.
Fig # 4 shows an exploded view of an extension assembly.
Fig # 5 shows a section through the centre of the invention.
Fig # 6 shows a three-dimensional exploded view of an alternative construction that utilises a plastic "popper" retention method for the extension members.
Fig # 7 shows a section through the alternative construction that utilises a plastic "popper" retention method for the extension members.
Now referring to the drawings, a furniture engaging assembly is attached to a leg or underside of furniture (1). The furniture engaging assembly comprises a Page 1 leg-engaging member (6) which engages a floor-engaging member (7), the two parts are held together by four retaining clips (20) or other means.
Trapped between the leg engaging member (6) and the floor engaging member (7) is a steel insert (10).
The top surface of the furniture engaging assembly can have an adhesive pad (8) attached allowing the part to be stuck in place, alternatively fixing can be by at least one screw applied through the screw fixing holes (9) or by any other means. A soft pad (2) as applied to the third extension may be fitted to the bottom of the furniture engaging assembly (7) if no extension members are to be utilised.
A first (3), second (4) and third (5) extension member can be attached to the furniture engaging member. Fig # 4 shows an exploded view of an extension member.
A pair of attachment members (12) retains a steel insert (14) and trap a magnet (11). The attachment members (12) may be made as a hinged pair utilising a living hinge' and is retained in the main extension member by means of clips (13).
Fig # 5 shows how, when assembled the magnets came into close proximity to the steel inserts and holds the parts together.
As the furniture engaging member is relatively short it is possible to leave it attached to the furniture after the need for the furniture raisers has passed.
In another embodiment of the invention the magnets and steel inserts may be retained in any other manner.
In a still further embodiment of the invention the steel insert may be replaced Page 2 by a second magnet or the first magnet may be made larger to replace the two magnets.
In a still further embodiment of the invention the positions of the magnets and steel plates can be reversed.
In another embodiment of the invention the magnets and steel plates are removed and replaced with a central plastic "popper" retention method. The "popper" (21) (22) is constructed on two "popper" members (15) (16). The "popper" (21) (22) is constructed such that it is made up of four segments that can individually spring to provide the required retention.
The two "popper" members (15) (16) are loaded inside a cavity (23) and held in place by a retaining member (17) loaded through a retaining slot (18). The "popper" (21) (22) retains an adjacent extension member by engaging an undercut (24). To summarise this embodiment of the invention the "popper" member (15) (16) is retained in the extension member by the retaining member (17) and the "popper" (21) (22) is arranged to spring to a smaller size when another extension member is presented to its upper surface and then to springing out to retain the second extension member on the undercut (24). The two assembled extensions can be separated by pulling apart.
This embodiment of the invention can be modified to utilise other designs of similar retention mechanisms to replace the "popper" (21) (22) such as a friction device or a spring controlled device.
The furniture engaging members (6) (7) may be simply placed together as shown in Fig # 3, alternatively they may be clipped, glued or attached together by any other means.
Page 3 In another embodiment of the invention the furniture engaging members (6) (7) can be retained together by a retaining clip (20) that engages a retaining ledge (19). In this embodiment as shown in fig # 7 there are four retaining clips (20), one associated with each of the four screw holes (9).
The drawings show three extension assemblies, in practice any practical number can be employed as required.
Accordingly the present invention comprises a furniture raiser suitable for attaching to the flat base or large leg of a piece of furniture and comprising a furniture engaging member that can be attached to the underside of the furniture or furniture leg by any means and is arranged such that at least one extension member may be attached to it to further raise the height of the furniture.
